CPL new teams speculation

I've been out of the loop and am trying to catch up.

But its fairly certain that we won't have any new teams for next season? Unless we can convince the Fury to join?

No we will have a new team next season. The commissioner has said a team is ready to be announced, but it’s not a good time for that right now.

Good stuff.

Maybe they will announce it after the Spring season is over.

Yeah not sure. They mite honestly wait till the fall season is done too.  Maybe announce it during the championship game ? Who knows. Be interesting to see if it gets leaked before they announce.

Yes, the rumour was they were considering have a new team enter for the fall season but have decided to wait until next year. Supposedly it was a Montreal area team.

Other groups that are apparently furthest along are Saskatoon and Saint John.

As for Ottawa I still feel their move to the CPL next year or beyond is not guaranteed and that the club may fold rather than join.

Do you have a link for that? Don't remember seeing that posted anywhere previously and Paul Beirne didn't seem as upbeat on anything happening quickly when he was on an Edmonton podcast a few weeks ago. The absence of a new team being accepted into CSA membership at the CSA AGM earlier this month would also tend to suggest nothing is 100% finalized yet (assuming he wasn't talking about Ottawa). I guess if he did say that he could have been talking about Saskatoon where the date of entry into the league is very much open ended when Joe Belan discusses it in interviews.

It was said in a video interview. Can’t remember which one it was some time around the launch of the league.

Clanachan hopes to announce at least one new franchise for the seven-team league this summer.

"If we were fortunate, we could maybe get to two (franchises)," Clanachan said during a visit with local media at Saturday’s game between Valour FC and HFX Wanderers FC at IGF.

"I'd like to see somewhere [in the range of] eight or nine teams [in the CPL] by next year at kick-off," Clanachan said. "I'd be more than happy to announce at least one team [soon] to show growth in the league."

There was another interview in which he talked about an actual announcement but I'm too lazy to keep looking.

Those are still aspirational more than anything else so are not quite the same as saying that they have a franchise ready to be announced but the time isn't right for it.

Of course.

Feel free to keep looking for the video/article and report back to us.

If we could get both Laval and Quebec City that would be great. I’d really like Ottawa to join then too. That would give us 10 teams so we can have easier scheduling.

Durham and Sask for 21.

Ok, just did a search and this came up from 4 years ago: Apostolopoulous heads up Pickering Investments and they are working on a major complex at that site. Though a stadium was not originally announced, we would suppose that room has been made for it.

How far has this development come along since it was approved, anyone in the area?

The first phase of development is underway with construction of the casino which is expected to open in 2020. It will have about 330,000 square feet of gaming space and a grand fountain. Part of the first phase also includes a hotel and a concert venue. All are expected to open in 2020. The hotel will have 225 rooms and the concert venue 2,500 seats. All three are in one structure.

The second phase, with site plans being submitted in the near future, will include 150,000 square feet of restaurants or food offerings, a luxury retail wing of about 30,000 square feet, another hotel with 350 rooms and with a convention centre anticipated to be more than 100,000 square feet, and 250,000 square feet of film studios.

Disappointing

I thought he was pleased with Saskatoon game...

Maybe the "sizzle" is due to the city giving them the land they want.

The city giving up the land for a new SSS would definitely be regarded as steak. I think that's what Rollins' is implying here, that there's positives but little substance.

In Quebec City, the stadium at Laval University is the one most suitable for a CPL team. It’s called Stade TELUS–Université Laval and it can seat a little less than 13,000 people. It has an artificial turf playing field lined for gridiron football. I have attended many Laval Rouge et Or gridiron football games there. There is enough room to install a 115 yard x 75 yard soccer field without removing the running track, but a soccer field 115 yards long would encroach on the gridiron end zones, which consist of red-coloured turf. Ideally the current turf would have to be replaced.

There’s a nice little stadium at Collège F.X. Garneau, which seats about 2,000 people and has a grandstand on one side. The artificial turf there is lined for gridiron football.

There is also Stade CANAC, in Quebec City’s lower town, where the Québec Capitales professional baseball team plays. It seats a little less than 5,000 people and has an artificial turf playing field. It’s designed for baseball.

What's with all the splits????

The extra splits were to create a more regionalized lower division, assuming that one of the main limiters of getting new teams into the league being travel and accommodations costs. The third split moves Div 2 from a national to a more regional grouping with less travel involved. The fourth split could either make completely regionalized Div 2 or a stepping-stone semi-regionalized Div 2 with a regionalized Div 3. The former would require less teams overall, but there might be a club financial shock going from regional to national travel. The latter would provide a buffer to lessen the financial travel shock, but would require more teams to fill Div 3.

That said, this is all looking far into the future. If the league proves viable, they wouldn't do the first split until around the 2026WC, the second split wouldn't happen until 10 years after that, and the third split wouldn't happen until 10 years after that (if at all), say, 2046.

The corn field in the street view above looks like a prime location in a lot of ways, but there is no off ramp from the 401 which I guess probably explains why it's still a corn field. There's a Go station reasonably close by but not quite as convenient for it in walking terms as you ideally want.

He does and there's an interchange at Brock Road 2 minutes away. Have you read what is being built on the site?

I used to live around there in Whitby. Bayly and Church is pretty close to the Ajax Go Train Station as well, so shuttle buses to the stadium should be doable. I get the feeling that they'd probably be affiliated with Darby FC from L1O as well to provide a pipeline of players.
