California United Football Club: More Than a Name for SoCal’s New NASL Outfit

Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. (August 8, 2017) - The word United is so common in the soccer world that it’s lost much of its meaning.  But California United Football Club, one of the newest clubs in the North American Soccer League (NASL), has made it the watchword for their entire operation. The club, based in Orange County, intends to tap into the massive grassroots soccer fervor alive and thriving in Southern California.

The aim is to exemplify the word United not just through performances on the field, but from the ground up – from scouting to player-relations, backroom operations, front office and fan base.

“It seems like everyone out there is doing things the same way,” said Pete Capriotti, California United FC’s majority owner. A fair and straight-talking businessman with roots in Orange County, Capriotti has a passion for the beautiful game and sees in it the potential for a groundswell in Southern California and beyond. “We’re not trying to be a legacy club. We’re going to do things differently, and that will all grow from how we treat our players, putting them at the heart of everything we do here and creating opportunities for them.”

NASL expansion update - Nipun Chopra tweeting NASL has more clubs interested in joining for 2018 :

Pending injunctive relief, NASL does indeed have more teams interested in a 2018 kickoff than ones prev. stated - ATL, DET.

At least 1 of the teams will be in a city where there might be an USL team as well. The NASL group plans on providing 100% privately financed funds for a stadium key to everything. Related: NASL owners I speak to confident in injunction.

As many as 17 NASL teams for 2018, wow!

From the article :

Let’s assume the NASL receives the injunctive relief it hopes for at the upcoming Oct. 31 hearing regarding its federal antitrust lawsuit against the USSF. What then? Turns out, the NASL is locked and loaded to bring in multiple expansion sides.

Per documentation provided to Soc Takes, seven teams — mostly current NPSL teams — signed letters of intent (LOIs) to join the league. These LOIs were signed in September 2017. Those teams are Boca Raton FC, Boston City FC, Detroit City FC, FC Arizona, a team in Hartford, New Orleans Jesters and Virginia Beach City FC. All but the New Orleans Jesters are poised to begin play in 2018. The Jesters are scheduled to play in the NASL in 2019, but would be announced in 2018.

So a NISA-NASL merger at D2 level, basically, if they get the injunction?

That's what it looks like.  Rush a major expansion to prop up the lawsuit and try to stay alive.  I don't want to see the league die but this seems rash and very risky.  Then again they've shocked us all time after time...

It makes sense, I guess.

They see their own waivers denied for "too few teams", yet see the USL waivers fly for "too low standards".

Solution: get more teams with fewer standards.  If nothing else, it gives NASL a better legal argument for the inevitable 2018 USL-favouritism antitrust injunction lawsuit.

This is basically the independent league's coming together to save NASL and all of their futures, a move that's a necessity really and keeps the vision of Peter Wilts independent club pro/rel setup of a pyramid in a pyramid alongside MLS/USL alive. NPSL is again this year having USL predatorily attempting to take clubs from them for USL PDL 2018 and has filed a letter of complaint a week ago for this with USSF.

SAN DIEGO NASL CLUB UNVEILS NAME AND LOGO

The region’s newest professional sports organization proudly announced today that it will officially be known as 1904 Football Club. Along with a description of the club name’s origin, the team unveiled a brand video to share their story.

1904 // A name inspired for and by the people of its representative city. A fellow supporter and most importantly, a San Diegan, suggested 1904, deriving from S, the 19th letter of the alphabet, paired with D, the 4th letter, making 1904 an iconic name for San Diego soccer. From the start, this team has been deeply rooted in its interest and appeal to the street culture here, making Nineteen O’Four and the many variations of this name absolutely fitting. Finally, we have chosen to use Football Club because of what we're steadily moving towards, to bring San Diego Football and its valued players to the world.

Colors/Logo // 1904 FC’s colors are as simple as the game itself. A game where one team must score just one more goal than the other. Black and white also represent both the darkness (challenges) of sports and the light (victory). The telescope represents the club’s long-term vision and commitment to the region, along with its goal of developing local football talent and helping young players achieve their dreams of playing international soccer. It also symbolizes the club’s connection to the city’s long-standing commitment, described as Semper Vigilans, which means ever vigilant, on the city seal.

“We believe in the people of San Diego. Our name reflects our commitment to the city and street culture,” club founder and professional soccer star Demba Ba said. “The number is already iconic in San Diego, now it will stand for the passion and pride of our region.”

In addition to Ba, the 1904 FC founding ownership group includes three other well-known professional footballers: Eden Hazard, Yohan Cabaye, and Moussa Sow. They are joined by sports business professionals Alex Gontran, Vagno Chandara, and Bob Watkins. The club’s leadership has begun leveraging their global network of coaches, stand-out athletes, and sports executives to build a premier football club focused on player development for San Diego.

Holy crap! "1904" is the lamest, most ridiculous hipster name imaginable.

Maybe if that year meant something to the city, but the nineteenth and fourth letter of the alphabet?!?!

Apparently it also has to do with Anchorman's speech about San Diego- "Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina."

I like it better than the over used "united" or "FC", some have used 1904 in reference to SD previously (not referring to Anchorman). I can see how this is a either like it or hate it type of name though.

Funny in a way, wonder if they knew of the Will Ferrel movie attachment? SG to be called "the Anchormen" lol.

NASL Owners to Help Fund Several NPSL Teams’ Participation in 2018 season

So much hinges on the preliminary injunction the NASL has requested from the court.  A hearing for the injunction will be held in Brooklyn on October 31st, and a decision is anticipated within a few weeks.   If NASL is granted the preliminary injunction, watch for the league to put an aggressive expansion plan in place that will see it eclipse 12 teams in 2018.  There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes right now to ready additional teams for next year.  Should the court’s decision go their way, we will see a very different NASL lineup in 2018 than we did in 2017.

The preliminary injunction also impacts the launch date of NISA.  If NASL is granted the injunction, NISA probably pushes to July 2018 or Spring 2019.  If the injunction is denied, then NISA becomes the prime landing spot for most NASL teams, pushing forward with the Spring 2018 season.  NISA is waiting until mid-November to seek sanctioning, which happens to be around the time when the court’s decision on the injunction is expected.  This is not a coincidence.

Midfield Press has been informed that league owners Rocco Commisso, Riccardo Silva and Robert Palmer plan to financially assist two NPSL teams each beyond their primary clubs, and that certain fees for those clubs may be waived.  We are told that the manner of financial assistance still leaves the NPSL club owners’ ownership stakes fully intact.

NASL'S SAN DIEGO 1904 FC Announce GM & Stadium Home

We now know who will lead San Diego’s new professional soccer team and where it will play. Team co-owner Demba Ba announced today that long-time soccer coach and player development specialist Alexandre Gontran will lead San Diego’s 1904 Football Club as General Manager and Head of Football Operations. The club also announced it is finalizing a lease with SoCal Sports Complex at El Corazon Park in Oceanside as the team’s permanent home venue.  A modular stadium that will seat roughly 10,000 fans will be completed in time for the start of the 2019 NASL season.

Competition for 1904 FC is slated to begin on March 31, 2018 in the North American Soccer League (NASL). Home matches will be hosted at Torero Stadium on the University of San Diego campus, then the team will move into its new home in Oceanside.

If the Crew do indeed leave for greener pastures in Austin, my bet is that NASL would step in to fill the void in Columbus. Think about it, they already have the stadium and the fanbase. Wonder what the likelihood of retaining the naming rights would be.

There is no chance the name would be usable - MLS would not give up the trademark to anyone, and especially not a NASL club.

Hard to know if NASL would work right away - there's always a mourning period after losing a club and it would be hard to go in under those circumstances.

If NASL could do it right, setting up a team to replace the Crew would be a major coup for them both in Colombus and in gaining respect and credibility with soccer fans throughout North America including MLS fans. A successful Colombus team would be like a second Cosmos in the league, a big team with history. It would be awesome after seeing MLS steal so many successful NASL teams to see the NASL get a MLS city. MLS fans in general are unhappy with the way a lot of things are being run in this league and very little of the loyalty they have towards their team extends to the league. MLS needs to really think about their strategy because moving a long standing team with a good fanbase could have a lot of well deserved negative consequences for them.

Editorial: In Cash Strapped Hartford, Only One Pro Soccer Choice Adds Up (hint:its NASL)

Whether Freimuth is accurate about the appeal of MLS affiliation or not – and the evidence goes against it as independent teams in both NASL and USL outdraw USL’s MLS affiliates and MLS2 teams – it is besides the point.  The Hartford Sports Group is seeking $10M in public funds, to match a reported $7M-$10M in funds the group will invest in fielding a team. A significant portion their private money is likely to go to the franchise fee for USL, reported by the LA Times to be $5M.  It would be highly irresponsible for any government entity to subsidize a pro soccer team in a city where a third of the population lives in poverty, especially when that city has just been bailed out financially by the state with funds from among other things tax hikes on the poor and on hospitals.

In contrast, there is Hartford City FC, who do not seek public funds to renovate Dillon Stadium.  One of the soccer fans let down by James Duckett’s false start was Hartford entrepreneur Aaron Sarwar.  After seeing so many fellow area soccer fans disappointed, Sarwar decided to do something about it.  He acquired the rights to the name and logo of Hartford City FC – the brand fan hopes built up around – and announced he was bringing a team to Hartford.

Sarwar reached out to the supporters group of Hartford soccer fans that were let down by Duckett, the Agents of Hale, and gave them something to cheer for.  Hartford City FC played its first season in the National Premier Soccer League last season. 866 fans turned out per match to watch the team, ranking them 12th nationally out of 96 teams in the NPSL, a league filled with grassroots semi-pro and amateur teams. It was an impressive total for a first year club.  On the field, Hartford City finished 3rd in the Atlantic White Conference, and beat Boston in the playoffs before falling in the next round.
