NASL 2017 Season

Recommended Posts

You're spot on @grasshopper1917.  USL is realistic about what it is and realizes that the way to get stable lower divisions is to keep a big focus on costs and make incremental improvements every year in all aspects of running a league. This isn't sexy or grandiose but it's realistic.

Long-term the goal. has to be to get pro-rel across all of North America. In the short-term that means consolidating D2 and D3 under the USL banner and to stop wasting time with the NASL experiment. If you want bigger changes in how MLS and NA soccer works, those are going to, and should, happen at the USSF/CSA level.

If NASL is not going to challenge the MLS/SUM/CPL model of business what is the point of it?

To provide a competition solely for independent professional clubs more in line with international league models than the single entity MLS and triple AAA minor league style USL development league.

To me the reality is the USL has 10 clubs drawing 5000+ fans the NASL has 2 clubs.

The league is just not feasible. The logistics are absurd when you look at the map. Teams flung all over the place Puerto Rico, Edmonton, Florida and California. The 'flagship' franchise 'Cosmos' who at one point wanted to challenge MLS drew 2200 to its last game. A couple of their sturdier franchises (Ottawa and T. Bay) jumped ship to USL while their revamped 'Cosmos' and the San Fran expansion club cant draw flies.

USL also has lots of weaker clubs but many of them are MLS2. Also USL has come up with a plan to have a division 2 and division 3. Im assuming many of the weaker clubs will drop with DIV 3 while the stronger ones with solid followings will play in division 2.

At the end of the day I just don't see the purpose of 2 leagues competing for division 2 status. Ideally USL and NASL would merge with maybe the top 20 clubs playing division 2 and the weaker 20 playing division 3. This way the logistics would be much better and the leagues would be much stronger.

However I think at the end NASL will just fold and a few of the stronger clubs move to USL. The losses clubs are sustaining in a league structured like this has to be heavy. Eventually deep pocketed owners get weary of multi million dollar losses year after year.

Quantity isn't quality. Again, USL has close to half the league drawing less than the worst NASL club.

Using the last Cosmos match is a very poor and inaccurate representation of the teams attendance - the match was rescheduled due to poor weather (which in other leagues has also results in piss poor attendance) and it was also mothers day which is a hard draw. They did draw close to a full house for their opener and the season is too young to extrapolate significant conclusions on their attendance just yet. San Francisco announcing turnstile will make it look worse than it is with other clubs in MLS, USL, and NASL announcing by the usual standard of tickets distributed.

I think the USL and NASL will continue on as co D2 and with they're different models and purposes that's fine. You do realize that USL clubs lose money as well, Charlotte for instance lost about as much as Ottawa did the last two years and the NASL is bringing costs down to where the two league's costs are similar. The NASL will continue to be an attractive league for some ownership groups that want more than the USL can give them and have higher aspirations, with more freedom and league ownership as well for each club as NASL is owned by the clubs themselves.

Pre/rel is not happening with the MLS and its minor league USL models ever and your delusional if you believe it is. MLS and USL just want to control and restrict the pyramid to protect they're business and $$$ not for the betterment of the sport.

Very good attendance numbers for NASL yesterday :

Miami 6115

New York 5421

Edmonton 4096

Average of 5211 for Saturdays matches. Edmonton had one of their best crowds ever, good to see them continuing they're strong attendance this year as they've increased over last season by a good margin.

Yea I was watching the Edmonton game and it looked pretty packed. Its nice to see folks out there getting out and supporting the club. Was also watching the highlights from the Ottawa game which had a similar attendance. The difference in the atmosphere in Edmonton was massive over Ottawa. 4000 people at Clarke seems to be a way better atmosphere then 4000 at Landsdowne.

Francesco Totti to NASL's Miami FC?

"Italian legend Francesco Totti in a Miami FC jersey? Don’t be surprised.

Totti, who played his final match for Roma Sunday after 25 years with the club, is considering extending his career with Miami FC, according to several Italian media reports.

On the surface, a move from Serie A to the second-division NASL might seem unlikely for the Roman icon, but Miami FC’s deep Italian roots make it an enticing option.

Totti, 40, is a close friend of Miami FC coach Alessandro Nesta. They were teammates on Italy’s World Cup winning team in 2006, and have remained in touch over the years. Also, the club’s part-owner is former Italian national team player Paolo Maldini."

June 3rd

In the battle at the top of the table between the top 2, Trafford's Miami defeated Beckie's Jacksonville 1-0. Trafford played 90 minutes at cb and Beckie played 81 minutes at rb. The Cosmos also won 1-0 with Jakovic playing 90 minutes and are tied with Jacksonville but with one game less to be played on Wednesday against Edmonton which lost 3-0 against the very weak Puerto Rico. Would be the right time to make a coaching change in Edmonton if they don't get a result

To be seen. Miller makes a lot of changes. Finally put Fisk back in the starting lineup. Ledgerwood on the bench again, Edmonton is not a good fit for him with Miller there. Played him at am and now benched
