Quote

Father Ruben Flores is also a former player in Mexico's first division and a coach and is adamant Marcelo will have the final say as to his international career.

"It's his decision," said Ruben in Spanish. "He's got the possibility of playing for three countries and he'll have to make a wise decision about where he'll develop best, where will give him the best opportunity."

"What've I've always said to him is that it has to come from the heart," he continued. "You can't play football without feeling it, feeling the colors. You're going to represent a lot of people; it has to come from the heart ... Until now I'm very proud and happy that he's decided to play for Mexico. He likes it when he goes and that's what is in his mind, but the advice I've always given him is to feel it from the heart."

We cap tied Busti based on the youth team was playing for. IMO Its a gamble worth taking if you don't want to miss out on what 'could be'. I hope Herdman plans to try the same thing here. Of the 3 teams we are probably the only ones who could justify a senior call up, maybe that could sway him.

Would the new rules not protect against doing something like this? He would have an easy way out potentially in the future.

I think we could still potentially cap tie him, but it would require getting him into 3 or 4 games or whatever the new requirement is. That’s a lot to hand to someone who is still a youth player at this point, and I am assuming approximately none of us have seen him play?

I do like the attitude of his father, giving Marcelo the freedom to choose.

His sisters sure sound Canadian in that video!

I don't know.  A year or two ago, I would say we had no chance.  Now, he can watch Phonzie on TV every week, and hopefully David and others pretty soon too.

And remember, our U15s beat Mexico 2-0 in the Concacaf championships (Flores didn't play), so we have more talent coming!

The other thing that stood out to me was his father's quote "He's got the possibility of playing for three countries and he'll have to make a wise decision about where he'll develop best, where will give him the best opportunity."

Yes, he would likely develop better with both Mexican & English Youth teams in regards to both coaching and given the fact both youth programs play many more games & qualify for international tournaments.  BUT, to me his father is also stating that he should make the decision on which country will give him the best opportunity to play.

Time will tell, but there comes a decision to make whether playing a couple games for a high level international team outweighs being a potential regular for Canada.  He will be 22 in 2026.

As much as I want to cap tie, and hoard every eligible Canadian player possible. I'm not too concerned with this one - the kid is only 16,  and a lot can change from now until the time he's even reached 20. We have sooo many young guys now coming out of the wood works, who are playing first team football at 2-3 tier levels. I'm also not overhyped on him because he's a youth player at Arsenal either. I see that done a lot here, only for the player to end up in PDL, Serie D, or at best playing bottom tier SPL. Youth football is the biggest toss up, as a rare amount get first team contracts, and that rare amount actually turn into first team minutes ESPECIALLY at big clubs.

So right now he's 16, he's no Davies, and loosely committed to Mexico. I'll revisit this thread when it's actually something.

Great videos & highlights, kid does look amazing, tough I agree with Shway assessment not Phonzy level, as all these plays/skills are done at the youth level, something Phonzy was already starting to show glimpses of it at the pro level when he was the same age, particularly during 2017 Concacaf GC!!!!... Very right to keep that in mind!

Nevertheless, he would be an awesome addition into our program, wasn't all that aware of him to be honest, but certainly a player worth following for sure... Very interesting to see what his next step would be once, they feel he has outgrown youth fútbol!!!

As other posters have mentioned, with Phonzy doing so well in the global stage & getting worldwide recognition in the fútbol world, plus already being a UCL champion, let alone a treble winner with one of Europe's biggest club and the fact he can now tune in easily & followed/watched all of this, should be a big boost for him to want to join such an exciting attack we already r  developing in a not too distant future!!!!🙏🏿... Also, being aware of Jonathan David's big transfer move to another top 5 league (now just remains he brings in that top form into Ligue 1) to further convince him I guess our way!!!... As I saw by an article yesterday from another user who posted in the Phonzy thread, he(Phonzy + David) are considered to be 2 of the top U-20 prospects in world fútbol and this came from a British source where he is based now!!!!... All of this really should bode well our chances to getting him, particularly seeing no Mexcican in that list or accomplishing what Phonzy has done... Again, there is still the risk of losing out to him to the U.K. (England), which is a whole other juggernaut, but a lot of it is gonna depend how he translates his game into professional environment plus pretty certain that there are already a lot of top British (🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿) young footballers ahead of him in the pecking order and already getting far more professional minutes than he is, albeit some are a few years older!... I'm sure he is thinking of that too!!!... As I see it, our chances stand really well, but again feel free to disagree , just giving my perspctive

Getting back to him specifically & his game, very impressed with his first touch, ball control, dominance with the ball, great dribbler, fearless, not afraid to take guys on, great vision for passing, particularly short passes and really seems to like to engage in the give and go!

He would be an ideal dead ball specialist for us in our youth teams and hopefully later on into our senior squads, as I think we've never have had good dead ball specialist if my memory serves me right (or at least since I started following CANMNT), over the years haven't been all too impressed in that area, looks better now, but still could get better

Peace out and enjoy this little scouting assessment on him, hahahaha!

Yes, it is youth soccer but last season when the league started he was 15.  In my opinion very impressive skillset and overall video for a 15/16 year old.  I know for the fair-weather fan here in North America the #10 shirt doesn't have too much meaning but for most people around the world and most true fans know that being given the #10 jersey for Arsenal at any age level is a big deal.

Doesn't necessarily translate to the professional level but very seldom with quality clubs do you see a #10 who isn't one of the most important players of the team.

A lot of academy teams don't use squad numbers. Your shirt number is determined by the position you're selected in for that particular game. Not saying that's how Arsenal run things, though, but I wouldn't read too much into the number of his shirt at this point.

I'm sorry to say this but if Marcelo is good enough to play for Mexico it is MOST LIKELY a lost cause.  The kid was born and raised in Canada by a Mexican father who was employed by the Ontario Soccer Association for 6 years to identify and nurture Canadian talent.  If it doesn't happen under this scenario then it MOST LIKELY won't happen.

The kid is making his father proud.

Ruben (father) has also revived his soccer career in Europe through his sons burgeoning accomplishments.  By being a Mexican international, if Marcelo doesn't make it in Europe, he  could still find lucrative contracts in Mexico just by being a Mexican international.  If Marcelo doesn't make it in Europe and is a Canadian international he has MLS and CanPl to fall back on which are less lucrative contracts.  It makes sense for both their careers at the moment.

It's pretty clear that Ruben has some talent as a coach by developing his son to an elite talent.  I also understand that the knife cuts both ways.  We get players who aren't "Canadian" like Arfield and lose players who are "Canadian" but want to represent other countries.  It's easier to accept now that the developmental pipeline is getting more robust and we have more prospects than we ever had.

That being said, regardless if Ruben is fantastic coach I wouldn't want Owen Hargreaves father, Jonathan De Guzman father or, in this case, Ruben Flores anywhere near our prospect pool.  Our program needs to respect itself before anyone else can respect it.

From google translate

"" Marcelo also has Canadian nationality because he was born in Canada and we have received several calls from people in Canada because of the interest they have in my son, so far Marcelo has not been called to the Canadian national team , they have invited him to attend He has not gone to various concentrations but due to distances and times, but they follow him very closely; with England he already had a call-up here with the U16 last year and then Mexico came out and he began to tour with Mexico and it seems to be He also liked it, but as you mentioned well, none of my children is tied to anyone until they represent a selection at a higher level ".
