The Ref
The Confederations cup this year will be a prelude to Russia and their facilities for the 2018 World Cup. Here is an interesting review of the South America's representative and its coaches' styles. http://www.espnfc.com/team/brazil/205/blog/post/3039500/china-cup-title-hints-at-promising-future-and-sustained-success-for-chile

CanadianSoccerFan
This may be the final edition of the Confederations Cup. The test event for Qatar will be a club world cup instead of the Confederations Cup with no word on an alternate host. For 2026 the 6 team WC qualification playoff will serve as the test event for the host country. There were also reports a few months back that FIFA wants to expand the Club World Cup and hold it every 2 years (odd-numbered years) in June. http://aroundtherings.com/site/A__59608/Title__FIFA-Proposal-Could-Eliminate-Confederations-Cup/292/Articles

They get a full World Cup berth in addition to a spot in this 6 team playoff.
CanadianSoccerFan
For 2026 Oceania, Asia, Africa, and South America all send one team to the playoff tournament and CONCACAF sends two (one extra for the host confederation). I don't get how that is "screwing Oceania out of a place at the table".
The Ref
Conmebol wants a showdown between UEFA and Conmebol. Surely it makes for more competitive games to watch, but isn't the Confederations Cup already that to a great extent. https://www.fourfourtwo.com/news/chile-versus-portugal-conmebol-confident-arranging-showpiece-uefa-games

CTV/TSN/RDS have the rights for all FIFA international events until 2026 except the Club World Cup. The last Confederations' Cup was shown on CBC so they probably assumed that it would stay there. Plus what kind of site is that? Here's a news release about it. Find me something more than a dubious site. http://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/bell-media-secures-rights-to-fifa-world-cup-soccer-package-from-2015-to-2022-508941511.html

Yea and it's a shame cause on paper this tourney should be at least as big as the continental cups. Maybe if they simply did it as a knock-out thing it would be taken more seriously as every game would have high stakes. Shame they're going to likely kill this thing cause the concept is awesome. IAmPappy
My two cents ... the Confederations Cup is basically the national team version of the Club World Cup. You're always going to get a New Zeland or a Kasima Antlers showing up, which deminishes competitiveness and legitimacy. These competitions are only 'global' in name. I don't have an alternative, but perhaps a proper U21 or U23 World Cup would work. This summer for example, teams like Portugal and Germany had to stretch talent across three competitions, all pretty much at the same time: Confederations Cup, U20 World Cup, and U21 Euro. Make no sense. By having a proper U21/U23 World Cup, that would also give old timers like Sanchez and Ronaldo a break from non-stop competitions. Just a thought ... -Paul. While I agree the OFC (aka New Zealand) sides are not "good", I don't feel they're not the cause of the Tourney having diminished legitimacy, teams skipping the cup or sending B-teams and lack of money generated and lower TV ratings did. I don't blame any nation for sending a B-team. The calendar is busy (season ended less than a month ago) and the Confederations Cup really doesn't have the glory or payoff ($6.6m CAD vs $67m~(WC), $12m~(Euros), $8.5m (Copa America)). Plus winning doesn't secure you anything (eg. a World Cup spot or spot in the next ConCup or even a Super Cup thing). 23 hours ago, IAmPappy said: I don't have an alternative, but perhaps a proper U21 or U23 World Cup would work. A proper U23 thing would be interesting but it might hurt the Olympics. Maybe replacing a U23 with a "select team" made up of domestic based players with 3 players from foreign leagues could work. It's interesting you mention the CWC cause I really do think making the tournament more like the CWC (a quicker knock-out cup) would make it a better event. Schedule congestion is a real problem. Too many things going on simultaneously. Nations are forced to make choices and then we get b-teams showing up. Interesting you should mention the Olympics. That's marketed as a U23 competition, but FIFA (by design!) doesn't require clubs to release their talent for the Olympics, so clubs don't. To compensate, FIFA/IOC allow 3 players that are over 23. That seems silly. It's either U23 or it's not. By clearing the calendar and having just one flagship competition each summer, it would make that competition much more marketable, legitimate, and profitable. My 2 cents -Paul.
