Patrice Bernier - more to give to club and country?

Unless the rules have changed, you need to wait 5 years after your last France match to be eligible for them. That's how Fredéric Piquionne and Jocelyn Angloma were eligible to play for Martinique and Guadeloupe respectively.

Wow, thanks didn't know of this rule.

I'm assuming its because those countries are not independent of France yet or not recognized by FIFA?

Here's the thing. It wasn't an uncharacteristic game. we got outplayed by them. We only baeten Guadeloupe in 2011 but got a soft penalty call. We lost to Martinique 10 years ago, where Bernier started. I just think that you're underestimating a lot the talent of those teams because they'll have players who've played in Ligue 1. Florent Malouda will be eligible to play for them also. I don't know if he'll accept the call, but he was really interested to play in the playoff vs Honduras 2 years ago but wasn't eligible then, but now he will be. I just don't think we can't underestimate them like you are doing.

That was 10 years ago though. So now that the guy is excelling with Montreal we don't call him up? This is a different team from the last Gold Cups with different players. The coach should pick the best players that will help us go far in it. He shouldn't put huge emphasis on his past and focus on what he can bring to table.

Let's go back to Jahninhos statement where he says "The speed of the game is past Bernier". Really? A guy starting consistently on an MLS team can't handle a Gold Cup but players playing in 2nd/3rd divisions all over the world can? What makes them able to handle the "speed of the game" better than Bernier?

I'm not against calling Bernier. You said that. You said it was an one off when we lost to Martinique. It's not. That's my point. You're saying that because of that I don't want Bernier. It's not true at all. I don't think the fact that Bernier started is that important, but it's more to say that we aren't better than French Guiana.

I'd say more of an and instead of an or. Because Curaçao couldn't bring a former Holland international if he was captied. Still players have to have lineage which Malouda has.

He's been good offensively but his big weakness is when he has the ball in front of the defense facing his goal. He takes too long and exposes the ball and often turns into a scoring opportunity like against san jose and multiple times in previous seasons. Biello did well to put him higher so he can contribute more offensively and not be in those situations.

While I do understand your confusion, the truth and reality is that the International game is faster.

So let's talk Bernier, and the Impact......Bernier sits in front of an obvious slow/controlled system that consists of the main middle of Donadel 34, Bernadello 30, and they play an absorb and attack from the flanks style.(Piatti, Tabla, Oduro, Mancouso)

Last year I said he shouldn't be called up, today I'm saying he should.....but START? Hell noooooooo.

Where do you put him in a 4-5-1? or even a 4-2-3-1? His tracking back ability is past him (speed of the game), reason why Biello plays him higher up. So are we saying will create a system that benefits Patrice? Will he'll start over Johnson, Arfield, Osorio?

Just don't see any justification in starting/playing a guy who is older than 35yo who isn't named Francesco Totti.

I never said he would start, but he would be a huge sub coming off of the bench as a playmaker

Just a little bone to pick. I find it annoying when English media write Montreal as Montréal in an English context. Especially when they don't show the same regard to other French cities like Quebec City they don't write "Québec Nordiques" or Ville de Québec / Québec on the weather map for that matter. FFS you wouldn't read it as such "Montréal Impact". Stop trying to look cute, high class and sophisticated. If you're going to do it at least do it all the way "Impact de Montréal" or just bloody write Montreal Impact.

Ok done.

On the subject of Bernier's selection - well deserved and glad his performances have been recognized which were overlooked by the Turtle Master you would have thought he would've been invited earlier. Maybe Pat should've spent more time learning Spanish with the Argies.

It's an Instagram post, and the person running the account likely does both languages. So autocorrect probably put the é in there.

Is it an expectation that he played in his last ever CMNT match already? I say why not call him up for October and November

He's only got 5 games left with the Impact and who knows maybe a couple mor if they make the playoffs

He announced his international retirement to local media and has told that Zambrano that he was done after the Gold Cup. Can't find where it was written.

Bernier should look into a career in coaching after he retires, or 2-3 years down the road perhaps. Gotta a feeling he wants to dedicate as much time as possible to his family

He’s already been promised a role with the Impact academy for next year. Also if he hasn’t completed it yet he is in the process of completing one of the CSA’s coaching licenses.

I know this shouldn't come as a surprise

*For the record after the GC he never said that was his last match publically*

Just after the match, he posted a tweet that was pretty much him acknowledgining that he was done with the national team. Plus, the guy is retiring at the club level in 3 weeks. When asked in Montreal when Piette, AJH and Choinière were called up to the Jamaica game, he said that it was over. I can't find it, but while my google skills are failing me mabe because the one place I saw it in writing  changed (98.5 fm who changed their website 1 month ago)

It's all over. Hopefully national team coach learns and doesn't try to force it when a 38 year old player says that he's going to stop playing

https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2017/10/20/ahead-final-game-montreal-legend-patrice-bernier-reflects-career

? I knew OZ was wanted Bernier to keep playing but I never heard anything that sounded like "force".

I started this thread just under a year ago when Bernier had not yet signed for the 2017 season. He did. He played well (especially at the start of the season) and was a positive force for the #CanMNT and contributed to a very decent Gold Cup run.

For club, absolutely. For country, I think that ship sailed long ago.

All in all I am both happy with what he managed to do in the past year and that he proved @shermanator wrong.

Happy retirement Patrice!
