For club, absolutely. For country, I think that ship sailed long ago.

In my opinion, no, he shouldn't be around the national team setup for Gold Cup, regardless of how well he's playing for the Impact.

Calling a player who will retire from playing three months later and who hasn't been with the national team in a couple of years is very questionnable. Johnson, Arfield, Hoilett have a lot of quality and Piette and Aird have been coming up nicely so rather let them build chemistry.

Sometimes a short term solution is something you need to embrace. OZ is jumping almost head first into the Gold Cup, a major tournament, and knows reaching the knockout round is more important now than ever, not just for Canada but for his credibility. Calling up MLS' joint-number one assist getter is a short term solution that should be embraced.

I never rated Bernier. But I think it's an importent move both culturally and tactically to bring him in. He has bee. On fire for the Impact and really has proven how wrong I and the national team was in our assessment of him.

Yup I still shake my head to think of all the times he was left off the national team in crucial qualifying games where I think he could have helped. But of course we are a nation of so much talent that we have always had the luxury of keeping a player of this caliber off out national team!

I may have been proved wrong, but the speed of the international game may be past Bernier, and at 36 he's know Blanco...but we'll see. I think he's there just for the veterans presence which is only relevant to MTL players as he hasn't played with any players in the programs.

Mls Teams> French Guiana, Central American B teams

Need I remind you we lost to Martinique in 2013? And curious where was it stated that the GC17 will feature Central American B teams?

What does us losing to Martinique have to do with Bernier not being able to play on the international level. He wasn't in that game.

Also, I was just going with a lot of people on the forum saying that the Central American teams in the hex won't call up their full squad because of WCQs. Although, a majority of MLS teams are still better than a majority of the Gold Cup teams. If Bernier can excel in MLS, he certainly can keep up at this Gold Cup

Losing to Martinique was making reference to what you said below...

Mls Teams> French Guiana, Central American B teams

So i'm saying if you truly believe that, then look at 2013 when we lost to a team that was full of local players playing in Martinique. Ultimately I believe you are underestimating these teams, and neglecting my main point of the speed of the international game.

Santos beat Barca in one game back in a Club World Cup. Do you assume Santos is also better than Barca?

You mean the game Barca beat Santos 4-0???Or was this in video game you played?

Nevertheless the comparison is still way off regardless if it happened or not.

My bad it was Corinthians that beat Chelsea. My point is just because a team has 1 uncharacteristic game it doesn't make them good. You stating that Bernier will not be able to perform against a minnow like French Guiana just because Martinique beat Canada 4 years ago is ridiculous.

Here's the thing. It wasn't an uncharacteristic game. we got outplayed by them. We only baeten Guadeloupe in 2011 but got a soft penalty call. We lost to Martinique 10 years ago, where Bernier started. I just think that you're underestimating a lot the talent of those teams because they'll have players who've played in Ligue 1. Florent Malouda will be eligible to play for them also. I don't know if he'll accept the call, but he was really interested to play in the playoff vs Honduras 2 years ago but wasn't eligible then, but now he will be. I just don't think we can't underestimate them like you are doing.

Agreed!

....But wait, how is Florent 80capsforFrance Malouda eligible to play?

Unless the rules have changed, you need to wait 5 years after your last France match to be eligible for them. That's how Fredéric Piquionne and Jocelyn Angloma were eligible to play for Martinique and Guadeloupe respectively.
