Patrice Bernier - more to give to club and country?

Recommended Posts

Amazing TFC-Impact game last night. Bernier always seems to bring it to the next level at the end of the season. Will Patrice Bernier play for one more year? I believe his contract with the Impact is up. He signed for two more years at the end of 2014. http://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/impact-re-sign-their-captain-midfielder-bernier/

The longtime Canadian international, who is 37, was asked about his future in the moments after the loss.

"Not going to talk about it now, we'll see in the next few weeks talking with the club," Bernier said. "(Montreal) is home, so I think that's what pushes me to play even more, but we'll see. Personally I do feel like I've got more to give." http://www.theprovince.com/sports/montreal+impact+sees+season+painful+loss+archrival+toronto/12456493/story.html

Bernier as depth player for #CANMNT 2017 Gold Cup squad?  *ducks*

Unlike Drogba, he looks like he could still positively contribute in a significant way and as the Impact don't have many other local boys in the roster (though they might want to give Crepeau a chance now after last night's performance by their current starter) it would be a shame if he didn't come back for one more year. He's not going to be playing for Canada in 2022 though so I'm not sure a return to the nats makes as much sense.

As sherm said above, I like Bernier for MTL, but for Canada...helllll no

The last thing we need is someone in the middle waddling around in the middle at a low intensity. We need DM's who will allow our attackive players freedom to express themselves better than they currently do.

I'm surprised someone actually posted this. I thought Bernier's performance over recent years merited a call up and that he was being snubbed. Yeah he had a bad game once and a while distributing the ball but who on Canada hasn't? I thought he deserved to be there more than an equally aging old JDG playing at NASL and that Bernier had more stamina JDG over the matches he last played died out fast.  I even think Bernier offers more than Sam Piette.

For 37 years old, Bernier gets around the pitch quite well. He looks younger than 35 year old Julian de Guzman. I would not complain if he we needed to call him up, but at the same time I can't imagine an injury crisis where that'd be necessary. We have much more depth now.

It's a tough call. Early in the cycle, he probably wasn't playing enough to warrant inclusion. Late in the cycle, he was doing well but probably not integrated well enough with the squad to merit a call so late in qualifying. Now, we are at the beginning of a rebuild that definitely doesn't merit his inclusion of a 37 year old, unless we are going full veteran mode for the Gold Cup

Impact announce they have re-signed Bernier for the 2017 season. He will retire after the season, and start as an academy coach in 2018.

And since it will inevitably be brought up. In my opinion, no, he shouldn't be around the national team setup for Gold Cup, regardless of how well he's playing for the Impact.

I'm a big fan of having stabilizing veterans in these sorts of tournaments, even when trying to rebuild, to prevent the younger generation from getting shellshocked by getting leaned on too heavily too early

That said, you've got to pick and choose. If Hutchinson decides he's hanging up the boots for Canada, I think Bernier should be looked at for the veteran at the back of the midfield. If Hutch is in, that's covered already

At 37, that might me be a little too much to ask from the guy. Let's hope he can reach the same levels as before and end his impressive career on a high note.

Of course dependent on how he's doing, but I don't think anyone expected him to be this solid at 36. If he's still at a high level and I'm choosing between him, Straits, and Piette for CDM, I might just take the waiver on Bernier

Arcadio Marcuzzi says that him and another journalist talked to Octavio Zambrano and they were talking about Tabla and Jackson-Hamel, and Zambrano came back to Bernier. I would fully expect him to play for us at the very least for the friendly against Curacao.

I wouldn't mind that at all. They guy starts almost every game in the MLS and plays very well. If he is up for playing more Canada games let him.

We want our team to have plenty of youth in the Gold Cup to prepare for the future but we also need some leadership and guys to help the young kids out and look up to. Bernier could definitely give that experience.

Like the other link you posted in the Tabla thread. Zambrano doesn't think Bernier is too old: http://www.rds.ca/soccer/impact/octavio-zambrano-veut-convaincre-ballou-et-patrice-bernier-n-est-pas-trop-vieux-selon-lui-1.4442394

EDIT:

BTW, on the 985sports link, #CANMNT talk starts around minute 12 out of 32.

He's the kind of veteran that CPL needs to groom the younger up and coming players.

I predict that he's going to be courted by all the original 6 teams

Yeah I had said in an earlier post that he would be ideal for a Mtl team (if there was one) in CPL but he's staying with the Impact as a youth coach.:(

If he retires it will be because the Impact will "retire him" by finding a younger replacement and that's normal.

Him retiring doesn't mean he no longer wants to play and since there's no CPL officially, it's normal that he won't speculate.

It will be up to him and his desire to play or not. If he still wants to play once CPL starts, he will.

There's not going to be CPL for him

“I am very excited to be able to finish my playing career at home with the Impact,” Bernier said about his new contract. “I am proud that this will be my 18th professional season, including nine with the Impact. For my last season, I will give everything for the club and the city, with a hope that we finish with the MLS Cup.”

He' decided this is it and he wants to go out with the Impact, his hometown club.
