Played his NCAA there, probably has friends/contacts there. Based on choices made by a lot of players I think the idea that CanPL provides a way bigger opportunity than USL has proven to be a bit of a myth. The truth is it all comes down to personal preference/situation. A number who stayed in USL or chose to sign in USL instead probably either A) see it as a more direct path to MLS or were more comfortable signing with an existing club with an existing training staff rather than make the leap to a startup with plenty of unknowns C) in a few cases were offered more money in USL. We got some to come home, and if the league takes off as we expect it to, more and more will choose CanPL. These first couple years are the proving years, and guys like Haber and Bekker and DeJong are the pioneers who bought into this despite having other options. toontownman
Solid move for him after a disappointing draft. He has lots to prove and shove down peoples throats this year. Seeing how highly rated he was coming into the draft its possible he has been advised to go to the USL have a good year with the prospect of then stepping up to the MLS. Would have liked to have seen him in the CPL for sure but on the upside its another Canadian getting minutes (hopefully) in a decent league while at the same time probably opening up the door to another Canadian to get experience and exposure in the CPL. Bison44
This is kind of a no brainer. 4 years in NC in college, very smart business major. He has probably sunk roots into NC and has networked himself into lots of off field opportunities. Once MLS wasnt in the cards I am sure he leveraged his local "star" status to grab as much cash as possible to go to the local USL club. Good for him, hope he tears it up and gets an MLS chance next season. toontownman and Soccerpro

Vince193
I still find it weird that Pacific was able to splash cash on bringing in Haber and de Jong but apparently no team was able to sign Ricketts, with Paulus saying they can't afford that kind of contract. Either way had Ricketts joined a CPL team he'd still have a NT future but it seems that's over with his move to Lithuania.

FCE seems to have the best, most balanced international signings in the league, probably a result of players having familiarity with them. Could be that Ricketts could have been afforded, but may have thrown off the balance of the signings that Paulus wanted to make. Pay Ricketts a higher contract could easily result in having two or three players at a lower standard
BenFisk'sBiggestFan
Personally, I think the main reason Ricketts wasn't considered was because Ameobi was a shoo-in for Paulus. Ameobi would be on a fairly large contract and he probably didn't want to spend too much on the CF position to have a balanced team. Keep in mind that De Jong has said he is looking for playing time, and essentially to have a lagacy as being one of the first big stars of the league. That, coupled with being bought out by the Caps gives him a bit more freedom and ability to accept a smaller contract. I think Ricketts was looking for one last big payday, which he deserves given how much he has been screwed over in his career. Ricketts also has a very good looking resume. As one of Canada's top scorers, and just coming off a winning season in MLS. So he may have higher demands.

I don't think it's even about a payday, he just wants one last chance to play European football and hopefully actually win something after a pretty unsuccessful European career to date (he had never won a trophy of any kind in Europe until last week, the last time he played European football was in 2010 and he has never played in UEFA Champions League before). It's potentially his last chance at redemption after rebuilding his club career with TFC.
Keegan
22 year old David Choiniere said to be signing for MTL and then headed on loan to either York or Halifax. Interesting because he would certainly be a starter in USL for Ottawa but they're not going that route. I think I'd prefer Halifax for him. Some people were comparing David Choinière to Tabla, until an injury caused him to miss the better part of 2 seasons. If Choinière is back in top form, he will be dominant in CanPL. BringBackTheBlizzard
https://uk.soccerway.com/players/jose-gregorio-pina-flores/306779/ Union Atletico Falcon were a second tier club in Venezuela last season apparently, and got relegated to the third tier for 2019: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=es&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fes.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FUni%C3%B3n_Atl%C3%A9tico_Falc%C3%B3n https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=es&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fes.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FSegunda_División_de_Venezuela_2018 Venezuela unlike the rest of Comnebol has baseball rather than soccer as it's main sport, so there's probably less to get excited about here than when the player is from somewhere like Peru, Colombia or Uruguay. Maybe he was one of the players that was at the combine in the Dominican Republic that has been mentioned? I think Jim Brennan was in the Dominican Republic at one point.
