zen
1 hour ago, admin said: You are simply thinking of cars as the model we have now, but self driving. I am talking about a total transformation of all of that from ownership, infrastructure, intra car communication for traffic flow, shared ownership, scaled uber like services from a single pod to a bus. Parking will be less necessary, there will be more space, less cars and safer roads. This isn't a utopian view. It's possible and the benefits will outweigh just about everything. I agree it's not a utopian view, it will eventually happen. I just think it's going to take a long time, there will be a lot of push back against this. So even with vehicles with autonomous driving capabilities like the Teslas, car ownership will remain the same for a while. So I just don't think that the change we agree will take place will happen in the time scale that's relevant to the CPL discussion.

It's going to be really interesting. There might less push back though when all things start to get considered. The generation coming up don't seem to want cars. Not the urban kids anyway. 40K a year dead and countless more injured. The cost alone in almost every category we can measure should make this a priority. ironcub14
4 hours ago, rob.notenboom said: This is only a mistake in your eyes, Jeff as far as I'm concerned. The long and ingrained history of the Riders throughout the province for decades likely precluded the formation of a S'toon team. That doesn't mean that Regina & S'toon couldn't both have CanPL teams, but there's a reason neither city was on Peter Wilt's list despite several other cities being on there. It's because neither Regina nor S'toon would be considered excellent markets. Regina has two clear advantages: the stadium & Riders org (if they're involved). However virtually every other factor in Wilt's analysis, not to mention the absence of a likely big money investor means that it won't be a cakewalk to make a Sask team viable. Hey Rob and Jeff, we did get confirmation on this, that Peter Wilt's analysis in the article in the opening post, they were only done for American MSAs and Canadian CMAs with populations of 500K or greater. So Saskatoon and Regina were not actually considered in the article. That being said, we had a quick back and forth with Peter again yesterday, and I asked him he would consider doing his analysis again for a future article on MSAs/CMAs with populations of 250K to 500K, and he said yes. I thanked him and asked if he could consider Regina as an exception as I believe it has 211K You can thank me later lol. The Canadian CMAs with populations of 250K to 500K are the below, with #9 being Hamilton at 721K. 10 Kitchener–Cambridge–Waterloo 477,160 11 London 474,786 12 St. Catharines - Niagara (Niagara Falls, Welland) 392,184 13 Halifax 390,328 14 Oshawa (Whitby, Clarington) 356,177 15 Victoria (Saanich) 344,615 16 Windsor (Lakeshore) 319,246 17 Saskatoon 260,

Thanks Namu. One minor point, Regina's CMA is close to or above 250K now I believe as we've been experiencing record growth for most of the last decade. Oddly I know that Wilt was in contact with one influential Regina person. Hmm ... Just curious ... how are you guys 'back & forth' with him? It's just a long data dump and not something that stimulates discussion. Could you post something like a conclusion or analysis instead of just stats? I had sent the western Canadian portion to Tuscan and he asked me to post it here. There are a few folks keen to do a Peter Wilt-esque report for the Canadian market and rather than circulate it privately, better to put it out in the open. As posted in my first post, my interpretation of the data led to the post on the Alternative CPL Models thread - a national, 6 division system, fully open with pro/rel (with obvious standards at each level). My reasoning being that if the CJHL and CHL can make it work despite the population spread and immense distances in this country, there is nothing stopping regional Div 4/Div 3/Div 2 systems from being created leading to a national Div 1. It would be much less expensive than starting with Div 1, allow for mistakes to happen on a smaller scale and add excitement as teams play for promotion to each higher Division.. But my intent wasn't to get into a discussion (they're ultimately a waste of time), just to share the info.

No, 1,000,000 to have a reasonable expectation that the franchise will hang around. That means six core markets available with three already in MLS and at least another one with a franchise in place that is said not to be interested.
