dyslexic nam
If this materializes, it seems like a solid move. They would be competing at the top of the Swiss table and would provide a good platform for Liam to continue his growth. If the finish behind Young Boys, would they compete in the Europa league? apbsmith
Spent some years of my life in Switzerland, it's a beautiful country! The Swiss also really love Canadians and with his work ethic I could see him quickly becoming a fan favorite. Basel is a German speaking part of the country so he can practice with Alphonso :). Seems like this could be an excellent fit for the lad, for an upward trajectory in his career, still has lots of years in him to be a professional baller. Best of luck to him. Greatest Cockney Rip Off
European football would be a huge plus. Not going to get that staying in England. Shway, TGAA_Star, Corazon and 1 other
narduch
Swiss league starts July 24 and Basel are already playing friendlies. That would most likely mean no Gold Cup for Millar. Shway, johnyb, TGAA_Star and 3 others

This is one of those cases where focusing on the club would definitely be warranted. TGAA_Star, Chad_Impact, Watchmen and 12 others

ag futbol
Sounds like a great move. I think experience on the continent would be great for his football education and the club level feels about right. Dominic94
Good for him, interesting that NYRB wanted him… wouldn’t be a bad spot and he’d move fast if he did well. TGAA_Star and Floortom

Have to agree - think that would be a great fit for him as a potential replacement for Clark. The only options there that I hope he doesn’t go to are Charlton and Odense. TOcanadafan
I took a look at the Club Elo rankings and Basel is on par with a mid-table Championship squad. I’m happy he’s going this route than staying within England. To be able to play In the new Conference League is a great bonus! This would be a great move for sure CanadaFan123, cronaldo7, Obinna and 2 others
Stryker911
That would be the 10th most valuable transfer of a Canadian. Even more than Besiktas paid for Larin. CanadaFan123, Obinna, Corazon and 2 others
CanadaFan123
This would be great. Basel may be comparable to a championship side but there really is no comparison to playing continental football and competing for championships. toontownman
Great move. He needs minutes at a solid level. This is it and a great potential stepping stone if he does well. Hoping it works out for him. TGAA_Star
CanadianSoccerFan
Underlying story also mentions the following - Liam "understood be keen on the move" to Basel - Liverpool insisting on a significant sell-on clause. Negotiations are continuing - NY Red Bulls previously tried to sign him in January 2020 Edited June 27, 2021 by CanadianSoccerFan johnyb
Shway
Man I hope this move comes to fruition. Rid himself of the circle jerk of never ending loans from Liverpool. It’s time to get comfortable and establish himself as a key player and Basel is thee perfect place to get going. Fuck yea, this is exciting! Unnamed Trialist
For me this is not the ideal move, but not a bad one. It's better to go to a football system where you can move inside that system. Mid table Netherlands or Turkey, 2nd division Spain or Championship. It's also better to go to a team that's not a bigger fish in a smallish pond, as you're at the top and can only move on by moving out. Then, you aren't going to move from Basel to a top league, or not easily. What I like is that it's a solid pro club. That it'll get to European competition. It's a fine spot for a young man with a baby looking for a move. johnyb and The Real Marc
Nate3322
I think it's a great move for Liam, Basel is a good team in a decent league. The Swiss league is a perfect stepping stone for Millar with a good season or two he could easily end up in the Bundesliga like many other players who have made the jump to a top league from the Switzerland. johnyb, cronaldo7 and dyslexic nam
baulderdash77
I really like the move. He’s going to be playing European Football next year and this seems like the kind of level he get get a lot of playing time at and be successful. Its time for Liam to take that upward career trajectory and get on track at a better than League 1 level. cronaldo7 and TGAA_Star
The Real Marc
Other than NY and Basel, can’t see any of those clubs spending 2 million. Maybe the others were loan moves? Basel is better than Liverpool bench but he might have a hard time cracking that lineup
Dominic94
The key underrated part is that Liverpool want a significant sell on clause… I wonder if this is Liam driven… clearly they still rate him. johnyb
