Crazy Conspiracy Time: Could the US Government be paying the MLS to prevent Canadians from being domestics and to get as many USMNT players into the All-Star Game?

A report released yesterday by Arizona Republican Sens. John Flake and John McCain revealed that the Pentagon has been paying the Big Five (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and MLS) to create patriotic displays during sporting events as a part of 'recruitment campaigns'. While the revelation is largely about honoring soldiers at games, do you think this could be part of why Canadians are treated as international players instead of domestics in what is currently Canada's top tier league and why players like Sebastian Giovinco and Kei Kamara were originally not selected in favour of US Men's National team players? without even reading that story, I am going to guess the league in question is the NFL.

That part is actually true in so far as club form is concerned. Toronto requested a reduction in the Canadian domestic quota after getting slaughtered in their first year with the Lombardo's, Braz's and Reda's of the world. Even now the Canadian teams would be in a lot of trouble without Americans as domestics although it's certainly not as bad as it was at the inception of MLS and in a few more years should be nearly a non-issue as the USL teams and younger academy groupings start making a real difference.

The US government is certainly using professional sports to promote the war machine and use patriotism and nationalism to obscure the real reasons why the US military is omni-present throughout the globe and involved in countless wars. On the other hand I think the status of Canadian soccer players and the level of play of our national team is very, very, very low/non-existent on the list of concerns of the US government officials involved in using sports to promote the military and its conflicts.

Still disgusted by this even though it is not the least bit surprising.
