Recapping the U23 tournament

CSA failed and it started with a chance to showcase some of our best players at this age group right here at home at the PAN AM games,  instead of trying to put the best roster out there and showcasing this team at a pretty good event they failed, it could have gone a long way in the team gaining confidence at the PAN AM games going into the Olympic qualifying,   a definite head scratcher.

No one takes the Pan Ams seriously. Brazil didn't even send there B-team. It was there C team.

Mexico took the Pan Ams in 2011 seriously and won the Olympics the next year.

Take a look at the team they called:

Just like us they were the hosts and also utilized overage players that would go on to represent them the next year.  Why wouldn't we call a couple over agers?

Paraguay and Uruguay took the tournament seriously as both squads had players who were starters for their clubs in their domestic league and after the season already started. Even more, I remember the Paraguayan starting keeper was an overage, Ignacio Don, 33 years old, who played the 2 games in the 2014 Copa Libertadores final.

I thought it was a very good tournament all together. It would've been a lot better if Adekugbe was there to play LB as speed was an issue for JGL although he was very solid aside from that unfortunately glaring issue.

Petrasso was better than anyone that the US had and if he was an American the hype train for him would be through the roof.

Gasparotto was exceptional, held everything together and was always in the right place for a clearance.

Piette was fantastic aside from his unfortunate header against Mexico.

Crepeau was phenomenal, only made one real mistake and that was the first goal of the tournament, he needed to get a finger to that ball.

I would've liked to see more of Boakai but I understand that a lot of the situations unfortunately didn't call for a player of his skill set, although he did look good when he was on the field.

Here's the thing about PanAms. Clubs can say no and you have to work with that. I'm sure that there were tons of players who the CSA asked and the clubs said no or a possibility to recall players and they wanted to have all 18 players all in and if they didn't get that, they wouldn't call those players. I don't think that they didn't take it seriously, but they wanted to take the best players they could get and those were the ones they could get.

I think Petrasso is exactly the type of player we need replacing Junior in the 80th minute. After watching him tirelessly run at defenders over and over, it's hard to imagine he wouldn't have a positive impact on the senior team. The question for me is what's going on for him at QPR? Why hasn't he gone on loan yet if he isn't dressing for the first team? Perhaps Gator can shed some light on this.
