Cause a few of us were talking about him earlier this week, I figure I'd post this as a few felt he wasn't good enough for the USMNT.

Safe to say he's likely in the USMNT picture and that him possibly playing for Canada remains just a joke between him and Akindele.

He's good. He's just at a deep position. He still has to beat out Cameron, Brooks, Besler, Birnbaum, Carter-Vickers, and it looks like Zimmerman.

Is he on Twitter? Has anyone asked him about whether or not he is eligible for Canada?

He is in fact on Twitter @Matt_Hedges. He has a Canadian grandparent so he meets FIFA's criteria but I'm doubtful he has citizenship or a passport, due to how far removed he is from the Canadian connection, so even if he truly ends up outside of the USMNT picture it could take over a year before he enters the CanMNT picture (Arfield began the process about a year before his first appearance and Finlay couldn't do it until his father had it iirc).

This is a no-go for me. Hedges clearly wants to be part of the US set up and I think he will be under Arena, who sees two-thirds of his pool in MLS. Plus like SoccerPro said - it was just a joke to begin with.

Yea I don't think anyone seriously thinks he'll rep Canada ever.

Well, I'm not saying that Hedges can't play for the USA. But he's got his work cut out for him, For the US, he's probably anywhere from 4 to 8. If he were to join Canada, he would be the No. 1 center back, at least for now.  Obviously, it's probably Canada's biggest position of need. It sounds like it would take some time. But right now, Canada has nothing but time.

The real problem with it would be that the US has an onslaught of cap-tying games this year. So a decision on whether or not to commit would seem to be coming shortly.

He doesn't have to be number 1. 4 would be good enough but I get your point.

Anyone who can't crack the US roster isn't good enough for Canada. We're much more talented than the Yanks and should have higher expectations despite how FIFA ranks us.

I picture you speaking like it's the 1920s

So just a little update ..... Hedges' central defender partner at FC Dallas and rival for USMNT playing time, Walker Zimmerman, has been linked to two of the top 3 Bundesliga 2 teams (Stuttgart and Hanover). So there's a pretty good chance that Zimmerman will be playing in the Bundesliga next year. Which makes it a little more likely that Hedges will be odd man out of the US backline.

I thought the whole "Hedges playing for Canada" was a joke started by Hedges with his friend Tesho?? Is he actually eligible?

If he wanted to he could  maybe(grandmother is Canadian) but it was a joke between him and Tesho so there's little substance to him joining Canada

It was a joke and he'll probably never play for us. However, he is eligible through a grandparent born in Canada so it's not like there's 0% chance either.
