Does grandparent being Canadian give him the ability to a Canadian passport without having lived in Canada? Fifa is ok with grandparent link. Also this would have to be given the exception like the Motta situation because he has played for US in a friendly.

I thought friendlies didn't cap tie a player?

Yes they do not, but I was under the assumption that if you were ineligible to play for a country at the time of playing for another youth team then you could not make the one time switch. I made the assumption that this applies to friendlies along with youth games. This may not be the case. I was just raising these questions to see if he may be eligible.

I hit "reply to this topic" and it populated with the quote above.

Anyways, if his grandmother was born in Canada then Matt Hedges has been eligible for Canada since he was born and would not need an exemption - only filing a one-time switch.

edit: and he would need a passport.

There is a guy that keeps posting on the forum about making passports... perhaps he can help him out.

Under FIFA rules, Matt Hedges wouldn't have any problem to represent Canada if his grandfather is Canadian, but I'm not sure he qualifies as Canadian since his father and mother aren't Canadians. Hedges needs first his Canadian citizenship and a Canadian passport to represent Canada, and my understanding is no one can't be Canadian if your parents aren't born in Canada.

That's new law, passed by our current Conservative government. This wasn't true before.

(he was born before April 17th 2009)

For those who want to figure it out:

...he may need his (parent with a Canadian mother?) to apply for citizenship so then he can possibly get it from his parent.

This may be the case.

I have friends who have gone to play pro hockey in Italy and they were able to obtain Italian citizenship because their grandparents were born in Italy. Their parents then got citizenship through their grandparents. And they were able to get citizenship through their parents.

Italy's citizenship process is different than most countries.  I went through the same process you just mentioned as your friends.
