[ 1 ]  10 Player shortlist for the Best FIFA Women's  2017 award:

Lucy Bronze (ENG - Manchester City Women / Olympique Lyonnais Feminin)
Deyna Castellanos (VEN - Santa Clarita Blue Heat)
Pernille Harder (DEN - Linkopings / VfL Wolfsburg (Women))
Sam Kerr (AUS - Perth Glory / Sky Blue FC)
Carli Lloyd (USA - Houston Dash / Manchester City Women)
Dzsenifer Marozsan (GER - Olympique Lyonnais Feminin)
Lieke Martens (NED - FC Barcelona Femeni)
Vivianne Miedema (NED - FC Bayern Munich Frauen / Arsenal Women)
Wendie Renard (FRA - Olympique Lyonnais Feminin)
Jodie Taylor (ENG - Arsenal Women)

[ 2 ]  It's a bit amusing that Venezuelan/FSU sophomore striker, Deyna Castellanos  is so high on FIFA's list, but somewhat low on NCAA college lists. Deyna  Castellanos is currently number #20 on Topdrawersoccer.com's  " Women's National  Top 100"  and on the second team for Topdrawersoccer.com's "Women D1 Preseason Best XI". By comparison Jessie Fleming is ranked #4 and on the preseason first team.

[ 3 ] Obscure woso trivia :  Though different birth years, Deyna Castellanos  and Dzsenifer  Marozsan share the same calendar birth date of   April 18.

2017 FISU in Taipei kicks off.

MEN:  Uruguay 2-0 Canada

Canada went down to 10 men on a second yellow at 49' when it was 0-0 and gave up a goal in the 80'.  Then the Canadian goalkeeper took a straight red at the 89' and Uruguay added another at the 90'.  53% possession against Uruguay playing short for that long is pretty impressive.

The men play Japan tomorrow.  Japan beat Malaysia 2-0 in their opener, outshooting them 16-2.

WOMEN: Canada 1-0 Ireland

The women had similar 53% possession and outshot the Irish 15-8.  Who else but Joelle Gosselin scored in the 64'.

Next up for the women is Mexico on Tuesday,  Mexico played Ireland to a scoreless draw in their opener with 65% possession, outshooting them 18-0.

I watched the Canada/Ireland game last night, and have to say that we came close to not winning that game.  We seemed better technically, but had little skill in penetrating the Irish defense.  Time after time we hoofed a long ball into the top of the box, where the tall Irish backs would head it back out again to safety.  It seemed that only number 8 on our team (can't remember her name) was consistently dangerous in attacking the box with the ball.  I hope our team can come up with some fresh ideas for attacking in the coming games.

[ 1 ]  Ireland's backup keeper is Eve Badana, from Markham, Ontario. She's been with Republic of Ireland since 2012. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eve_Badana

[ 2 ]  Madelaine ( Maddie ) Hill from Brampton, Ontario (  who plays with Sunderland Ladies in FAWSL ) is with Team GB :

[ 3 ]  That's quite a beating that Colombia has  received : they've conceded 31 goals in two matches. Yikes.

She's very well-spoken and sincere in that interview.

This was another interesting read:

http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/40962526

"Since making the complaint, Chelsea forward Aluko has not been picked for England and last played for her country in April 2016 despite being the Women's Super League One top scorer the same year."

The irony is England massively out-shot the Dutch in their 3-0 loss to them in the Euro and of 20 attempts only hit the net 5 times.

2017 FISU Round Two

MEN:  Japan 5-0 Canada

Japan with 65% possession and out-shooting Canada 15-3 with 12 on target.  Scoreless after 40' and 1-0 at half-time but not a pretty second half.

Next up for the men is Malaysia tomorrow.

WOMEN: Mexico 2-0 Canada

Relatively even possession which is notable for a Canadian team playing Mexico. Goals in the 15' and 33'. Shots were 16-7 for Mexico.

Next up for Canada is Brazil Thursday.  Brazil beat Colombia 17-0 and Japan 3-1.

After the third games are the final classification games.

[ 1 ]  Mark  Sampson's "ebola" joke, if true, is unfunny and racially insensitive.

[ 2 ]  That said, can there be racism when there are two people of colour on the current England squad? I'd be curious to know what Demi Stokes and  Nikita Parris  have to say on this matter  without fear of FA reprisal.  They  could be the difference in either confirming or refuting Aluko's charges/claims. If all the England players of colour were treated badly by Sampson then charges of racism become  more convincing. But if Stokes and Parris  say ,in full honesty, that they had no problems ( or minor problems ) with Sampson then charges of racism collapse.

[  3  ]  PFA support for Aluko

[ 4 ] Off Topic ( the Jessie Fleming stay in school or play abroad discussion ) :

Just throwing this out there   but  Eni Aluko is an example of a player who got a meaningful education ( a law degree ) on the side,  while being a starter for both  club(s) and country.

An unequivocal YES!

Don't know enough to comment on Mark Sampson but know enough to answer that question.

Being a little bit racist is like being a little bit pregnant..

^  I think in general you're right. My point is that if Sampson can demonstrate a good working relationship with Stokes and Parris  ( perhaps even a friendly one ) then  that would counter any allegations that Sampson is a racist. The second part of Aluko's complaint is about bullying .My hunch is that Sampson ( the Sampson team )  has treated some players poorly and that it's a function of his personality, his management deficiencies and his management style -- and not motivated by racist beliefs. Anyway, as of today, Mark Sampson retains support from the FA  and  from the current England squad which went to the Euros ( which  would  include Stokes & Parris) :

QUOTE :   The FA are adamant that Sampson’s job is not under threat and he will continue to lead the team ahead of the start of their World Cup qualifying campaign next month.

QUOTE :    Significantly, despite the controversy and the seriousness of the allegations made against him, Telegraph Sport has learnt that the former manager of Bristol Academy has also retained the support of the England players who reached the semi-finals of the European Championships, without Aluko, in July.

FISU Games

Men

It was the 9-16 placement game for the Men today.  They beat the USA 2-0.  Marc Olivier Kouo Dibongue from Laval gets the hat trick.

Their next game is the 9-12 placement game against South Africa on Sunday and then a final game Tuesday against Brazil or South Korea to determine their final standing.

Women

Canada lost 1-0 to Brazil with just 32% possession and getting well out-shot and massively out-cornered. It wasn't a complete loss though as we did commit almost 20 fouls.

Next up is a 5-8 classification game tomorrow against South Korea, followed by a final placement game on Monday against the USA or Mexico. The South Koreans beat the USA 3-0, tied Argentina 2-2, and tied Chinese Taipei 1-1.
