Unnamed Trialist
Barça made a surprise signing yesterday, picking up Lucy Bronze who was out of contract with Manchester City. I know she is not what she used to be but still a premium player. She'll probably be a starter as our RB is a weak link. As she is attacking and scores, she'll give us an option on the right behind Graham Hansen, who I have not seen overlapped by a back in years. Interestingly, former Barça Leila Ouahabi, a LB, has gone the other way, to Manchester City. I always wonder how much these changes may be driven by salary improvements. I mean, I suspect Bronze being a former The Best must be making over 200,000 euros a year. Does Barça pay her significantly more? Now that we are losing Leike Martens, who signed for PSG yesterday, that will clear up salary for sure. I suspect Martens was our highest paid player. We could also ask the same about Huitema going to Seattle, is there a major salary rise there? In women's football, I think there are maybe only 15-20 clubs in the world who can pay "well". Then there are others who want to push into the elite and may start to dedicate more resources, like Juventus or Real Madrid.
rkomar
Good questions. I also wonder how much of the movement is driven by family considerations? Particularly by work prospects for a partner. That's probably not as important at the highest salaries, but would get more so the less you get paid playing soccer. It seems that a lot of trades in the NWSL are organized around that. It seems that a lot of trades in the NWSL are organized around that. I could see Bronze wanting a change, at her age. And playing for Barça is a bit of glamour, after they got 90,000 + for a few Champions League games. But the glamour or prestige could go in a lot of directions, playing in England, for Lyon, in Spain, in the US league. But I don't know the salary situations. In a very surprising move, Jenny Hermoso the Barça-Spain striker, has signed in Mexico, she's going to Pachuca. That also suggests those teams must really be spending more, and are pushing to raise the overall level. Finally, an interesting set of comments from Sweden international Asllani has criticized Real Madrid for not caring for the players' health, forcing them to play injured or ill, and not being concerned about them recovering properly. I am not suprised as it is a new team, recently invented, that wants immediate results, and has zero experience with women's football. In fact Asllani was signed by Tacón, which was a team that played in Madrid in 1st division that RM bought to start their project. https://www.90min.com/posts/kosovare-asllani-criticises-unhealthy-dangerous-environment-real-madrid

red card
With no men's tournaments this summer, women's football takes centre stage with the greatest month ever seen in women's national team football. AFCON Morocco, 2-23 July BEIN/fubo 12 nations: Top 4 qualify for 2023 World Cup. Next 2 qualify for inter continental playoffs. As with the men, CAF’s women qualifying system is brutal. One of CAF’s best teams – Ghana- won’t be at AFCON because it lost a qualifier to another CAF powerhouse – Nigeria. Copa America Femenina Colombia, 8-30 July At this point, not on a Canadian platform. But as with Copa America, somebody may pick up FS1 feed. 10 nations: Top 3 qualify for 2023 World Cup. Next 2 qualify for inter continental playoffs. Winner qualifies for 2024 Olympics. Second place qualifies for inter continental Olympic playoffs. Brasil has won it 7 times. Argentina & Chile are starting to emerge. Colombia is 2nd highest Conmebol nation, are hosts and looked quite organized in 2 recent US friendlies. OFC Nations Cup Fiji, 13-30 July Likely to be streamed by oceaniafootball.com 9 nations: Winner qualifies for inter continental playoffs as New Zealand is already in as host. Euro 22 England, 6-31 July Uefa.tv has all matches if not shown by TSN. 16 nations Concacaf W Mexico, 4-18 July OneSoccer/fubotv & CBC (delayed/live first 3 matches) 8 nations: Top 4 qualify for 2023 World Cup. Next 2 qualify for inter continental playoffs. Winner qualifies for 2024 Olympics. Second & third place qualify for Concacaf Olympic playoff. red card
Barbara Banda who plays for Shanghai and played for Zambia last year at the Olympics where she was the first player to score back-to-back hat-tricks, has been ruled out of AFCON because she failed gender identity tests. red card
Zambia & Morocco both qualify for the World Cup for the first time. Zambia won in penalties over Senegal without Banda. Host Morocco become the first North African nation in the World Cup after defeating Botswana in front of 45k. So far, WAFCON > Concacaf W despite having 2 championship nations and 2 leagues in the top 10. Big crowds for Morocco matches, some people in the stands for other matches and some travelling support vs almost nil in Concacaf. red card
RSA win WAFCON for the first time. They got US$24k for winning - more than what the average South African makes in a year. Morocco had previously never gotten past the group stages. But now they played in front of 45k crowds for all their matches. Nigeria had won 9/11 of previous WAFCONs. red card
After the busiest month for women's national team football, here's where I think they stand. Euros: A generation ahead of the other confeds. Good attendance in the stands and watching on tv in a few countries. Tactics, goalkeeping, fitness & strength all have markedly improved. Lowest level of cultural resistance to women's football, most monies to spend and most infrastructure to leverage. Eng v Esp was probably the best women's national team match I have seen in terms of quality and "breathless" entertainment factor. Ger v Fra was a proper clash of heavyweights, throbbing tempo, high level strategy & tactics, good technical skills on display and good amount of shithousery. Canada is going to have even a harder time breaking down these nations in the 2023 World Cup. But they do have the advantage of pace. In defending, only about 3 Euro teams can probably score against Canada if playing at peak levels. The women's game needs more natural born strikers. The US still has the advantage of their transition & crossing game and possibly having a new superstar emerging by next year. Copa America: Basically capacity crowds for host nation matches of Colombia. Finally saw match characteristics on par with men's Conmebol matches from shithousery, badgering refs & no holds barred fouls. Pace, strength, fitness & defending have improved but mostly subpar. Majority likely still not on board with women's football. Paraguay players protested during their anthems for their lack of support. Brasil still dominates but Colombia has solidified its position as number 2 in Conmebol. Paraguay joins Argentina & Chile as emerging nations. WAFCON: Basically capacity crowds for host nation matches of Morocco. Some travelling support for certain other countries. But most of CAF don't take women's football seriously. CAF banned one of the stars of women's football for high testosterone even though she played in last year's Olympics. Action on the pitch was the most dynamic of all confeds but goalkeeping, defending, fitness & tactics are still subpar. Second highest level of dual nationals after Concacaf should help in growing more quickly. Morocco emerged as a possible CAF power. South Africa & Nigeria proved they're still the best of CAF. Zambia continued showing their exciting potential on the heels of their Tokyo performance. Concacaf: Lowest crowds. Only tourney with no travelling supporters. Only tourney where the host nation didn't make the final. US & Canada are at the level of the top 6 Euro teams while the rest are more in line with CAF & Conmebol (ex Brasil/Colombia). Haiti could qualify depending on groupings.
red card
Canada drops 1 spot to #7 in FIFA rankings. This means a drop to Pot 2 for the World Cup Draw on October 22. England gained 56 points and moved from 8th to 4th. Mexico lost 66 points and dropped 10 spots to 36th. Nigeria had next biggest drop of 47 points. North Korea still in top 10 due grace period for inactivity due to covid. Brasil is only Conmebol nation in top 20. Jedi Ram
