Vic
Just setting this up. The Swiss are known for their organization (go figure), their world class striker Ramona Bachmann, their captain defender Caroline Abbe, and quality in the attack from behind Bachmann in Lara Dickenmann and Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic Bachmann is immensely talented and able to go on the Maradonna/Messi run through multiple players. She plays for the Swedish champions, Abbe for the German champions, Dickenmann for the French champions, and Crnogorcevic for Frankfurt who were one win from being German champions. They went undefeated in qualifying and tossed aside Denmark and Iceland to get here. Not a team to be taken lightly. The referee is a Kiwi and the assistants are another Kiwi and an Aussi. I don't discount the Swiss ladies but they got to the round of 16 thanks to their thrashing of Ecuador which does say much. On the other hand Canada only has 2 ties and a lucky penalty on the last minute over China. Should the game end up in a tie, do they go extra time or straight to PKs? tc-in-bc
[ 1 ] Sample Swiss lineup: Crnogorcevic Humm Dickenmann Bachmann Kiwic Moser Rinast Kuster Walti Maritz Thalmann [ 2 ] Notes about Switzerland's forwards. Fabienne Humm scored 8 goals in 7 games for FC Zurich in UEFA women's champions league but bowed out in the round-of-16 to Glasgow City FC, though she did score in both legs. Ana Marie Crnogorcevic only had 1 goal for FC Frankfurt last year. And Vanessa Burki, the 29 year old striker for Bayern Munich had 6 goals in 17 games last season. [ 3 ] This is a winnable game for Canada because the Swiss WWC roster is nearly identical to the 2013 Cyprus Cup roster that Canada beat in group stage of that tournament. 16 of 18 Swiss players who played in the 2013 Cyprus Cup are here in the 2015 WWC. Stated differently, Canada has seen and thwarted all of Switzerland's main attackers before ( Dickenmann, Bachmann, Burki, Humm, Crnogorcevic ) and should be able to do it again. king1010
They look absolutely terrible. Nothing going forward. Sinclair and tancredi are past it. Sessleman is a mess in the back. Even if we get through this game, we wont win the qfs.

Even if we get through this game, we wont win the qfs. I would say that Sesselman doesn't want to be there. Never seen somebody more tentative and useless. We are still playing with no plan, just make it up as you go. Hope this is the last of Herdman.

JamboAl
wow, other than for the middle of the second half we were outplayed by Switzerland, need clearer play. Agreed. It was a good win that was ground out. But I feel a bit like this team is like the Greek team than won the European Championships in 2004.

beachesl
Yes, and Herdman did change things in the halftime and the players adopted some urgency. Herdman is still the best coach the Woman's team has had so far , no doubt about that, even without the star players in their prime of 10 years ago. He can react sensibly to what is going on on the field, something Evan could never do.
beachesl
I'd like to say we should replace Sinclair, Sesselman, and Tancredi, but I am afraid I am at a loss to say who at the moment.
beachesl
Congratulations to Belanger, McLeod, Buchanan and Chapman. Special mention for Wilkinson and Tancredit. Would agree with all but Tancredi. Chapman looked a little lost and hesitant in the first half, but was really good in the second, and was a reserve of cool for Canada at the end. red card
I didn't understand the first half. Playing in your home World Cup and playing ordinary. The crowd also quite quiet. Heard the girls scream & talk on the field way to often for a home team match. But after Herdman's halftime talk (and this is why he is the best coach the women have had), the team turned into around. We finally saw some crosses into box. But still no corner kicks or free kicks means we're still too hesitant. Other players making quite a bit of nervous induced mistakes.
Joe MacCarthy
Sinclair and tancredi are past it. Sessleman is a mess in the back. I don't know what game you were watchin' but I thought that was Sess and Tanc's best game so far. And Sinclair was there when it counted. Yeah the team was outplayed and offensive decision making in the first half was poor but I wouldn't blame those three,.
Unnamed Trialist
End of 1st half I thought whoever wins it will deserve it. We combined better, sometimes very well, but were a bit stretched in the attacking third. The Swiss had less ball and less play but once behind our mids ran at us and looked threatening. 2nd half we did better, deserved the goal, held on very well. The Swiss had one really good chance on that cross (from Bachman) that McLeod saved well coming across to the player far post. Other than that, we sweated but not that much. So a very professional win. Three clean sheets and best defence in the WC so far. In most positions on the field a Canadian clearly won their match-up, perhaps we are a bit weaker in the defensive middle so that was the only part of the field we lost, only because they could get through it to Bachman. Possession was 50-50 in a match we had the lead in for 35 minutes. Some good tactics from Herdman. After the goal Sinclar settled back to help defend and was kind of invisible, but working hard. Filigno was a good addition pressuring their backs, letting us remove a striker, and looked for the pass. Smart to take Lawrence off especially, she was lagging. Kyle for experience late. Shocked and disappointed by the criticisms of our play here, frankly some of you are deluded if you think that was a problem. I watch my football at Camp Nou so no one can say my standards are low. We played very well at times, no player was ever seriously out of position, we played as a team, communicating on the field too; and players being criticized ended up being crucial, like Sinclair. Fitness was good. Watch Brazil-Australia, neither of them played better than we did today, both were notably worse. McLead still holds the ball incredibly long after picking it up, there were some 12-13 second kicks there, when the rule says 6 after you have settled. Six. We got creamed on that rule once, let's not do it again. Someone get to McLeod and convince her that if she gets called again, she will be to blame. Yeah the team was outplayed and offensive decision making in the first half was poor but I wouldn't blame those three,.Sessleman was horrendus. Give aways. Tripping over the ball. Out of position on counter attacks. Balls going through her legs. Have a search on twitter and see what ppl thought of her game. Yes it may have been their best games. Doesnt change the fact that theyre past it. Only issue is there is no better alternatives to replace them. Sinclair used to be able to put a game on her back. Shes still a good player but not the player she once was.
king1010
Agreed on the mcleaod front. She holds the ball too long and really tests the referrees. At the end of the game she just laid on top of the ball pretending she was hurt for 15 seconds. Shes lucky the ref just allowed her to take a spot kick. red card
McLeod holding the ball too long also just slows the tempo of the team and we're not that fast in the first place. And a long kick leads to a header to nowhere and we lose possession anyway. Even Chapman on throw-ins takes too long. Some of the blame lies of the players not quickly moving into position to receive the kick or throw. Sesselman is showing her game rust. Good enough for friendlies but not for WWC. It was Tancredi's best match but still sub par. She also looks rusty being away for 2 years. Her touch has been horrible. At least today, she brought her physical game. Schmidt also hasn't stepped up. Belanger, Buchanan & Lawrence have stepped up another gear needed for WWC.
