Sportsnet and Soccercanada part ways

The annoying thing is that it seems the CSA was caught off guard. John Molinaro had to ask if Sportsnet was showing the Men's qualifyer return game to find out the rights had expired. Hopefully TSN can pick up the rights...only alternative is Bein Sports.

I just hope that the deal is with both official languages. I know it's not much, but aside from the FIFA events (Senior World Cup or Confederations Cup), we've seen only one game in French in the past 10+ years. The fact that both Francophone sports stations have 2 different feeds helps a lot in showing our team on TV and being the team of all Canadians. I do think that the CSA's deal needs to include something for that. We see that Tennis Canada is forcing Sportsnet to sublicense its Rogers Cup coverage to TVA Sports. I hope we can see something similar.

What about GOLTV?

It seems natural that TSN would take over from Sportsnet even if it's not until September.

1) Bell is one of the team's biggest sponsors and of course Bell owns TSN

2) TSN is investing a lot in soccer now by taking over the champions league rights and world cup rights in addition to recent investments in the EURO, MLS, and EPL.

3) The loss of the NHL rights leaves TSN in need of content, especially midweek.

You can also add TSN has the CFL rights and given they might push for a Canadian league at some point, likely want to familiarize themselves more with the product and build it up.

We're two days away from our 1st qualifier.

According to Twitter exchanges I've had with Gavin Day, he'll only know if he can set up a stream of the game once he gets to Dominica. Everything is contingent on how good internet service is at the stadium.

I kind of find it weird about the internet situation at the stadium because it just hosted a cricket test match between Australia and the West Indies last week; and I know the Australian media would have had decent access.

Probably beIN Sports where everything else has gone.

I don't think so. Fox Sports will have the rights in the US and BeIN has rights to already three of the top 5 leagues. I think that it makes no sense for them because they would need to spend money for a Canadian broadcast.

I think that Sportsnet World is the most probable place because 1) They would get content that would gain subscribers. 2) They do show some EPL on it, but not enough to warrant to buy it unless you're a massive fan of a club there. Because you can get 5-6 games on TSN1-5 SN/1/360 per matchday so the EPL isn't restricted to one Premium-channel, but Bundesliga would be something like that. Maybe once in a while, you'd get a game on the other channels, but it would be more the exception than the rule.

They better get another channel because they can't even adequately cover the content they have currently. French Ligue 1 gets horribly shafted as is. I don't know how much better the Bundesliga will fair.

Being an employee at TSN, I really hope we do pick up the rights to Canada Soccer. They have been taking strides in covering international Canadian events recently like the Women's World Cup, this year's Rugby World Cup, and all of FIBA's Basketball events coming up in August. Of course all the international hockey also, but that doesn't really count as of recent because we've been covering that for forever.

I may be speaking straight from bias too but I'm sure many agree that TSN is a lot better than Sportsnet at garnering interest in sporting events and has a lot better analysis of them. I think we could get so many more people more interested in the game.

I'm sure the CSA will approach about the idea. I get emails right when new deals are signed so I could keep everyone updated if I see anything.
