baulderdash77
I don’t think Vanney favours one country over the other. He just coaches to win and he uses the rules to give himself any advantage he can. He’s a good coach. shamrock, 1996, Obinna and 6 others

This year he has played more Canadians than other years, but if you take the time to count the Americans on the field and compare to the Canadians it doesn’t look so Canadian after all. For example, the second leg against Ottawa (first game I checked that would be presumably pretty Canadian heavy). Canadians: Fraser, Telfer, Chapman started. Subs, Hamilton, Morgan, Osorio. 6 Canadians, 3 as subs! Wow, looks fantastic! Americans: Altidore, Akinola (yes, as of now he is American), Irwin, Morrow, Hagglund, Hernandez, Delgado 7 Americans, all starters. Oh... I see. Its been mentioned a few times by the media that TFC has one of the most domestic rosters in MLS when counting Americans and Canadians. If they were internationals instead of Americans on the roster, would you feel differently about it? Of the Americans you named 3 are of pretty high quality and have USMNT caps (Altidore, Morrow, Delgado though he hasn't had a great year), Akinola is American I agree but is also homegrown from Academy, and Irwin was at one point the starting keeper (not exactly a lot of MLS starting quality keepers out there that are Canadian). Hagglund was one of TFC's better draft picks Hernandez, yeah I'm not sure why he was resigned Edited August 1, 2018 by deschamp86

If TFC did encourage him to go to the U.S. system, they are now publicly proclaiming him to be Canadian, so the club seems to have its own interests at heart rather than national allegiance. So if you were blindly shown a team’s vitals without knowing what city they represent and you just see the gameday rosters, would you think that team is American or Canadian? To me since more players are American even when a particularly Canadian heavy lineup is played, it really does seem at least as American as it is Canadian. When talk of the CPL really got going I started to consider all MLS teams as American teams, though some play their games in Canada. I stopped caring about the domestic rules (but of course still hope to see Canadian players on the field) and started taking any Canadian player development that happened in MLS as a bonus (Davies looks to be one heck of a bonus). ChuckMe92
Monitoring the US players this weekend, perhaps I'm overreacting, but Akinola's chances with the USA are looking more and more grim: -Tim Weah is starting at CF in the middle of Neymar and Di Maria for PSG in their Ligue 1 opener -Pulisic appears to be not just a Borussia Dortmund starter but perhaps their best attacker -CF Emmanuel Sabbi is leading the Danish Superliga in goals scored. Must watch the replay on this one: -Romain Gall is starting, productively so, for Malmo FF in Sweden -Andrija Novakovich started in Fortuna Sittard's opener at CF in the Eredivisie and should keep his spot moving forward -Josh Sargent looks to be in position for regular playing time (though not starting yet) for Werder Bremen -Jonathan Amon is healthy and returned today for Nordsjaelland -Konrad de la Fuente moved up to Barcelona Juvenil A -Haji Wright started and scored for Schalke II -the top US domestic-based CF prospect, Sebastian Soto, bolted from Real Salt Lake to sign a deal with Hannover 96 -Kevin Lankford, considered a lesser US prospect, earned a starting job at winger in the 2. Bundesliga for Heidenheim -Siebatcheu is off to a slow start with Rennes, making his low France odds even lower, and the US has contacted him recently Kadenge and Keegan
Keegan
He's still ahead of a few of those guys.. it's not like it'll be any easier competing with Larin, Davies, Tabla, Millar and David BUT the good thing is that with Canada you won't fall completely off the map (like Bunbury did with the USA). Our depth means that even if he were to be second choice to the aforementioned guys he could still get a Canada call with a couple injuries/suspensions. apbsmith, ChuckMe92, BCM and 5 others 7

Obinna
I consider this development to definitely be a positive for us. I am frankly a little surprised he could make a decision for 2019 FIFA U-20 WCQ. This reminds me of Aird. He could have waited a little longer to assess his chances with Scotland, but he was only 19 when rumors began to emerge that he was close to deciding. http://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/spfl/rumour-mill-fraser-forster-rangers-world-cup-1-3386697 Plus this is coming while Akinola is playing for a Canadian team. That makes me optimistic also. Addona, Shway, Blackjack15 and 1 other
hodgkiss
Honestly, I wish these guys would crap or get off the pot. Playing for "your country" shouldn't be about which decision is "best for you". It's about pride for your country. Davies didn't think twice and is a far better talent than Akinola. Frankly, if he doesn't want to play for Canada, then go somewhere else. If he chooses Canada because he is a proud Canadian and wants to play for his country then, I would gladly love to see him in a red and white kit. As much so as some of our other guys who never wavered. Even though he had played for Scotland first, he comes across as the kind of guy that has Canada as number one in his heart. We have taken back some guys like Vitoria, but he never seemed very outspoken about playing for Canada in the same way that a guy like Aird was after making the switch. Even a guy like Arfield who has very little connection to the country seems to have more pride in playing for us than I'd imagine Akinola would. If he does decide to switch over, I hope I am wrong about him Obinna

I think only guys who we deem as truly guys who want to play for Canada should suit up for Canada, players should be put in front of a panel of voyageurs with the panel deciding if that player is one who shows a real desire to play for Canada and then the panel decides if he is a player the national team can choose. Moreover, I’m convinced by doing this we will finally become a top team in CONCACF and qualify for every World Cup from here on in. Guys with the desire of Aird , Arfield, Straith and so on guys that have not thought twice to come play for Canada a team made up of these guys will guarantee us of qualifying for World Cups , if i guy has an inkling of maybe wanting to play for another country we should not take them lol. Come on people this is Canada soccer if a guy has talent and has even a small inkling of desire to play for Canada we need to go after them, guys with a lot of desire but lacking in mounds of talent like your Straiths, Airds and so on have not and will not get us anywhere like we have seen. Regardless, he needs to decide soon, Herdman is 100% pro passion and pride, comments like what he made, out of context or not, don't bode well for him. It’s easy for us to sit here most of us are lucky if we could make our high school soccer team making comments about certain players desires about playing for Canada, and saying how it should be an easy decision to make and wanting players that don’t think twice about playing for Canada. Like I’ve stated many times on here if we are finally going to make a bloody run on making the World Cup we need talented players heart and desire will only get us so far as we have seen, there will be players with talent that can make a difference on the field that yes may have another country on their mind in terms of who to play for, however , we still need to try and go after those players I could not give two shits that they are not jumping right away to play for Canada, if they have talent I’m going after them even if they need a bit of persuasion I’m sorry it’s just the way it is. It’s a romantic notion and very beautiful and seems so nice to just sit back and have only players that only have ever wanted to play for Canada and not have to go out and do some convincing of some players to suit up for us. However , like in life the world is not like that nice beautiful Hollywood movie where everything is perfect, to get ahead in life and achieve what one wants sometimes you have to do things that you don’t like doing , like for many on here having to persuade players to play for Canada , ya it sucks that we have to do this but in the end if we get some of these players on board and we finally have success who the hell will care that Canada may not have been their first choice ? You think tHonduras will care that they were beaten out of the final World Cup spot by Canada a team that may have had a few players that had to be persuaded to play for Canada and that Canada may not have been their first choice lol? Fortunately, we are coming to a talent point, at least up front , guys willing to wear the shirt, and play with pride, passion and heart will override the selfish. Agree that's why I said it's always important to look at the entire context, I was just not a fan of the comment itself (yes generalized, but still not a fan of that comment). Politically correct comment would have been something like, "I have a strong connection to both countries, it will be a difficult decision for me" Again, he is young etc etc. but wasn't a fan of the comment "what's best for me", that's what didn't sit well with me. I'm all aboard having him play for us, just want him to wear the leaf for the right reasons. I know we are no where near the quality of France, but sometimes if your pride is not there, you get left behind. Hopefully one day we get to that point... where that being named to the team is an honor not a "personal choice". Rant over. Bison44
He doesnt even stand out very much at TFC2. Even looking at his age group, David, Millar, Davies etc, we already have better kids who want to play for us (dont say it...I know we need everyone we can get). Even if he chooses Canada he isnt going to have a cake walk getting onto teams. And unless he really lives up to his fullest potential I cant see him getting called to the USMNT. I hope this was just the reporter looking for a CDN angle during the CDN championship about a kid with dual possibilities. Frankly I think its the talking about it that pisses off the fans the most. When they talk about it like they are deciding on wearing a red shirt today or maybe a red white and blue shirt and its doesnt really matter to them. And to all of us, it does matter.
