Petrasso is not a right back and we shouldn't be playing him there. Edwards is also not a defender. For the Impact they are both pretty decent on the attack but do not defend well. Not sure whether Smith is the best option since I have not seen him play and he is not that young but we really need to find a better right back than Petrasso with the national team.

Cordova is playing RB regularly in quality top flight. He’s my leading candidate for our RB today.

Last year says otherwise, he was very solid at RB and I see no reason for anyone to dismiss him in that position. He won that spot from Cordova, fair and square.

Cordova was apparently left off the Gold Cup squad by Zambrano so he could establish himself at his club and get minutes there, given the timing of his season in Chile, so the story goes. He is reportedly very committed to Canada so I seems they weren’t worried about formally capping him then. I’d expect him to be called to the fall LON to cap tie and in all likelihood to challenge / outplay Petrasso for the start. I like petrasso In general but Cordova is further ahead, especially defensively

If you watched him game in and game out with Montreal you would see many reasons every game to dismiss him as a right back. That we brought him in as a right back shows how bad the Impact's scouting is because unlike Canada a club team is not hindered by their national player pool and should be able to get an actual player for each position instead of converting players. He tries hard but one can really see he is not a trained defender (doesn't know where to be on the pitch, does not position his body properly to defend, gets caught upfield too often, etc) plus even if he were able to learn the position better I don't think it really fits his skill set. He has potential as a winger which is precisely where he was playing before Canada needed a right back and decided he would be a good candidate. Right now he is a depth MLS winger and would be a decent signing for the Impact if that was the role he was signed for. Edwards is similar though maybe a bit closer to a MLS starter than Petrasso.  Since the Impact don't have many other options at right wing both of them should get some opportunity at that position this year and hopefully will use it to develop into a starter. As for the national team, we need to hope Cordova or Godinho can convince at that position because I am not very hopeful that Petrasso will.

Let’s be realistic here

Hes born and raised in Northern Ireland and 30 years old in 10 days

Was never gonna play for Canada as he’s half (1/2)

Not even sure if he has citizenship or passport

And looking at our present situation:

Herdman is looking for young players for the future

Respectable career I must say

Wish him luck

Okay but being realistic who cares if he’s 30?  He would still be a likely starter for us at RB.. sadly.  If we could bring in a starter for the next few years to play gold cups and qualifiers I wouldn’t say no.  We have a few guys who are close to breaking through at RB but not quite there, including Smiths club mate Godinho.

If Jamie changes the website, maybe. Otherwise, they won't. All middle to lower tier teams discuss would bes and could bes. Just look at how many foreigners were playing for Algeria and a Senegal in the World Cup. Or in our confederation with all the Caribbean teams. Or even in the US. We'll stop discussing guys in 3rd tier Finland and first division Gibraltar, but definitely not Championship (or even League 1) and first tier Scotland. Our pool will grow but we will always be looking for more.

I doubt that but hopefully the quality of players being discussed will rise to a level more in keeping with the standard of international football. No disrespect to Smith and his career and he might actually be our starting RB if he were playing for us but that is only due to us being very weak in this position. If we reach a respectable national team level guys like that should be way down the depth chart. We want to be at the level where at every position we have good options and are talking about top players who are dual citizens like at striker with Larin, Cavallini, AJH and David and we are hoping a dual national scoring goals in a top league and superior to them will commit.

In the spirit of that, he didn’t play against Bosnia so he is still up for grabs

That is why I posted "This thread will never die" as a joke in the first place!

He did not see the field for the two UEFA Nations League games in October:

However, for november:

He did start for the friendly vs Republic of Ireland.

and has just started for the UEFA Nations League game in Belfast vs Austria:

UEFA Nations League games seem to be competitive fixtures, so he is now CAP-TIED TO NORTHERN IRELAND. :(

So this thread is now dead. And that's kinda sad. ;)
