Admittedly never seen this guy play, but he plays in English League 1. I'm not sure he's solve the issue.

He would still to a better job than a Norweigan D2 center back, an NASL defensive midfielder, and a Scottish D2 attacking midfielder

Lol at this thread.  The guys is totally committed to another country, and has even been included in the squad (just not capped yet) and we are STILL sitting around wondering if he there is any way we can get him.

Not judging - I get why we want him.  Just think it is funny.  And sad.

Michael Smith is what Canada needs. I wonder if anyone has been in contact with him? The chances of him making  Northern Ireland are rare. Juan Cordova is 20 , Zachary Brault-Guillard is only 18 and Nik is 32 with a lot km on his legs. Michael fits in so well!

Despite being a mainstay at right back for The Posh, and their vice-captain (he even had the armband for a few games), their coach, who had extended his contract just one year earlier, seemed to sour on him. He got transfer listed.

Aside: Only 4 games into the season it’s hard to argue with Grant McCann though, Peterborough United are the only team with a perfect record. 12 points

In MAY he was NOT CALLED to a Northern Ireland training camp for lower league players (EFL Championship, EFL League 1 & 2) who had finished their seasons early:

He was then (logically), NOT CALLED to Northern Ireland’s June main squad for a friendly and a WCQ:

Transfer listed at the season's end (which seemed a bit odd) and on the move to Scotland with Hearts.

So after signing with Heart of Midlothian (there was also interest from Coventry City who have just been relegated into EFL League 2 last season), the headlines were positive. The assistant coach for Northern Ireland is also assistant at Hearts. Northern Irish coach Michael O'Neill said that his move could help Smith get back into the Northern Ireland squad:

Despite the good press and becoming Hearts starting right back ( @JamboAl,  how many games have you watched?) he was NOT CALLED into a 25-man Northern Ireland squad weakened by injuries for the two September WCQs:

http://www.irishfa.com/news/2017/august/michael-oneill-announces-squad-to-face-san-marino-czech-republic

Then there was another injury and HE WAS CALLED for both September games:

Just watch him get capped vs San Marino "Alain Rochat style"

It didn't happen last time, but I have a feeling it will happen this time!

He's started every match for Hearts so far and been fairly dependable but not spectacular.  He will get capped by NI especially as their pool of players isn't much bigger than ours.  The manager actually lives in Edinburgh and pops by to watch Hearts on a fairly regular basis as there are a couple of NI players in the Hearts squad.

Doesn't look like Smith was even on the bench for the San Marino match

No he was not: http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/round=276483/match=300331954/index.html

He wasn't in the lineup today vs the Czech Republic: http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/round=276483/match=300331979/index.html

The false hope continues.

It does!

Next month will be interesting because Northern Ireland have two WCQ that mean (almost) nothing. Germany has clinched the 1st place and a ticket to Russia 2018 and Northern Ireland have assured themselves of 2nd place. N.I. just have to NOT be the worst 2nd place team + possibly try to keep a good FIFA ranking in those next two games to be a seeded team during the draw.

who is michael smith?

Who is @HugoDirtySanchez ? & did he bother to read a thread that's only 3 pages long (& is mostly GIFs anyways)?

His Wikipedia article is literally linked to in the first page of this thread.

I'm feeling very patient this afternoon:

That's who Hugo Sanchez is:

But I won't post a link for a "dirty Sanchez"....

Any updates?

He still hasn't had received a call-up for Northern Ireland since October 2016, so he still only has the one friendly cap. He'll be 30 this fall, so it's possible he could be considering switching. While our future RB depth seems great, he could be a good, experienced competitor for Petrasso in the short term.

Petrasso is not a right back and we shouldn't be playing him there. Edwards is also not a defender. For the Impact they are both pretty decent on the attack but do not defend well. Not sure whether Smith is the best option since I have not seen him play and he is not that young but we really need to find a better right back than Petrasso with the national team.
