JDG's stock has gone down this much that he can only sign for NASL team? Or did NASL offer JDG buckets of money (by NASL standards minus Cosmos)

what about JDG's family?

He's 34. Marc Dos Santos is on TSN radio talking about him. de Guzman wanted to play in Canada. I think his family wouldn't have a problem moving back to Canada.

He was linked to Columbus before coming to Ottawa, so his stock is at least worth being looked at by MLS clubs. I do see him being one of the better players in NASL this year.

I love this signing. It's a perfect example of the value pro clubs bring to Canadian footy. It's a good level for him to stay match fit between CanMNT stints. In the meantime, he'll be representing a Canadian club, playing in front of Canadians and providing exposure to both his club and the Canadian national team. He'll be an excellent role model to Fury youth players, providing leadership and experience.

One day, I'd love to see all Unattached FC players making moves like this and playing in Canada. The benefits are priceless.

I said this in a different thread, but this one is more active... I think it is a good thing that he has signed for Ottawa vs signing for one of the NASL elite. This way there are all the positives Red and White mentioned above, and also he will be playing against all of the big teams still. He's going to play against NYC, San Antonio, and Minnesota (who have an incredible squad for NASL) which is still good competition. Certain teams in the NASL are a lot closer to MLS standard than people give them credit for.

I agree with Red and White, great signing by Ottawa. IMO Edmonton and Ottawa should be a place for Canadians, young or old, to get a chance to play some quality minutes. Patryk Misik is another example of a Canadian that fits this mold signed by Ottawa. Edmonton signing Jonke last year is another, even with his struggles.

I don't think JDG is too worried about $.  He's done pretty well over his career, and apparently he owns a bunch of real estate in Toronto.  So signing with a NASL club probably makes sense in that he will get a good chance to play and be pretty close to Toronto and family there.  Better than toiling away in an obscure eastern European league for marginally more $.

Should be interesting to see if other Canadians in his position do something similar as they get to their mid-30's.  I can think of a few guys who did squeeze out a couple more years in lower profile Euro leagues in countries that would not be the greatest to live in.  A NASL club would be a far better off the field prospect.  And I suspect once you get to a certain age and have a family, where you live and play becomes a lot more important.

Huge signing for Ottawa and great for the CMNT.  Who knows if JDG waited too long or if Ottawa was just offering better money but I still like it.

If the league is good enough for Honduran and US internationals I don't think we can say that JDG is too good for this level.  Minnesota, San Antonio and NY Cosmos are all MLS level teams.  It's about time one of the Canadian clubs made a big splash like this.. they're competing but being left behind in terms of "big" signings.  Hopefully De Rosario is next.

People talk about stalling NASL/USL expansion so we can debate a Canadian D1 or wait year after year for the CSA to sort out a nationwide D3 - meanwhile this signing shows the value that more pro opportunities offer, and within an American system.

More evidence that we need to max out the available cities.  Not sure if NASL is viable in Calgary, Winnipeg, Hamilton etc but it should be a goal.  Same goes for USL in Victoria, Quebec (?), even Halifax(?), although they might do well in the PDL northeast conference.

Depending on how Ottawa play this may or may not be a good move football-wise. JDG seems to rise and fall with the talent surrounding him. Some players are just like that.

My worry is that they guys around him will not have the same soccer IQ. We saw that at TFC when JDG was not on the same page. His assets are distributing the ball and keeping posession but those qualities are dependent on having teammates who know how to get in position to recieve.

Anyone care to break down how Ottawa plays and the skill sets of the players?

Are his children coming with him this time?

I doubt it, unless his German ex-girlfriend has relinquished custody. BTW, B-B likes to post on just about everything even if he knows little about it, so take his posts with a grain of salt.
