Cyprus

Nea Salamis 0 - 0 Ayia Napa

Haber in the starting lineup.

Haber has that starting spot locked, but doesn't seem to be scoring. Apparently coaches rate his work for the team. And of course playing for one of the worse teams in the league, service is probably lousy anyway. Still, a good year for Haber,  playing week-in week-out, having to fight against relegation. Hope he'll get picked-up by a better team next season though.

Highlights of Borjan game:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Bn0AcxwH7mI

He had a busy day and made some nice saves.

How does he not catch on with a bigger club? Would be good for him if red star or partizan sign him next year. Europe exposure and a chance to move to a bigger team.

Also kenny stamatopolous got another clean sheet for AIK in the sweedish cup.

Whose our number 2? Kenny? Lars?

Because he's Canadian. A big part of the reason he's not at a bigger club is because many will see his passport and immediately pass him over.

Israel

H. Raanana 2 - 0 Hapoel Haifa (Ricketts)

Rickets got 90 minutes again. Don't like this club for him though (nor the league really).

Besiktas get Club Brugge in the Europa League round of 16 draw.

March 12 and 19

That looks very doable.

Mmm, I don't think there's a lot of industries less discriminatory than pro football. I can agree that Canada doesn't have good rep, but if a club thinks you can help them get points, they will sign you, regardless of nation (or race for that matter). He was with a big club (in Bulgaria that is), I do hope that he can make a case for himself again and join a better league after summer. He needs some stability, hopefully he can get away from the Eastern European leagues.

I think the move to Radnicki Nis was great for Borjan. If he is truly the starting GK there, it'll be the first regular club action he'll have received in ~18 months.

Compare that move to Monsalve's move to America de Cali, where he is at a bigger club, but will be lucky to see much action. Monsalve did it to catch the eye of Floro, but it'll be hard to impress when he still has to rely on his Oulu resume to show what he can do.

Is being a backup or third stringer on a bigger club more important, or is being the starter on a smaller club more important? It's great if you can break through on the bigger team, but how many times has that happened recently?

I don't think clubs matter to Floro at all. He's more than happy to ignore regulars at the NASL level or in Finland and call up guys who haven't played club minutes in more than 6 months or guys who have even yet to play a professional minute.

Yes, but he represents Canada internationally. Live in a bubble all you want but there is still a huge bias against Americans and Canadians when it comes to team scouting.

Yes, Doneil Henry comes to mind. There were great reports about him, but unfortunately his Canadian background stood in the way.

Have you ever spoken to a scout? Do you have any idea how they operate? They look at qualities, strengths and weaknesses of a player and write reports accordingly. How do you think Kyle Larin came up on top of the draft this year? How did he even get into a NCAA college?

Have you ever heard of a guy named George Weah? Andrei Sjevsjenko? How does anyone from New Zealand get into the Premier league? Or into the Primeira Liga (having played for Wellington that is)? How do you go from the Iranian league to the Primera Division? If you don't make it, you only have yourself to blame. Football is hard but fair.

Then please, in your infinite knowledge tell me how a guy like Borjan, while being a very good player has been relegated to Eastern Europe after Roberto Carlos took one look at him when he joined Sivasspor and sent him packing. I'd like to know.

My point is there is an inherent bias. There will be for a very long time. There was a scout who mentioned that given an African, South American and a North American of similar skill and age, the first two are always most likely to get harder looks. It's just the way the game is. You go with the most familiar talent.

Kid's Argentinian? let's bring him in.

A Canadian? ehhh I don't know.

Well, Borjan clubs situation have been complicated in the past. Being let go at the last minute by Ludogorets might have complicated things in term of finding a club at the end of January.

IMO Borjan is clearly someone who could play at a higher level but still young (27-28) for a keeper, so good things will eventually happen for him in the future if continues to progress.
