Olympic qualifying will begin this fall

Uh oh.

I wonder what this means for us as a large percentage of our U23 team is good enough for the senior team as well and the senior team will either be playing WCQ or Copa America playoffs in September or October.  Luckily we have the deepest pool of U23 players we've had (since I've been following at least) and most of them play domestically... now watch MLS clubs refuse to release them.

If its played on an int'l date they can't refuse right?

Who knows how it pans out. Floro has looked at a lot of guys and qualifiers will interrupt both MLS and Europe. Will be interesting to see who gets released.

Good thing will be these kids playing in USL Pro will be on their mid-season form unlike other countries (excluding USA) where their kids most likely coming from off-season so match fitness might be an issue for them.

I have no idea who is even eligible. Is Osorio (turns 23 in June)? Is Teibert (turns 23 in December)?

Nope, just 93s and younger.  So basically our past 2 U20 cycles.

Henry, James, Petrasso, Piette, Aleman, Alderson, Carreiro, Aird, Clarke etc.

That is terrible news. The US and Mexico have already started playing games and we are behind the 8 ball. Wonder what happened.

True but Floro has brought many Olympic-aged players into camps. It could be a way for him preparing the MNT and Olympic team all at once.

The bulk of the qualifying tournament will take place during October 2015 FIFA International Match Calendar window. It was brought forward so that the playoff vs. CONMEBOL could take place in March 2016.

The Caribbean Football Union qualifiers will begin in the summer.

The UNCAF qualifiers are scheduled for 22-28 June in Panama (Group 'A') and 29 June-5 July (Group 'B') in Guatemala.

There's talk about it being rebranded as the CONCACAF U-23 Championship. Notice how the CONCACAF U23 Championship is a different category to the Olympic qualifying of 2012 on the USSoccer.com website.

United States Named Host for CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship 2015

Tournament to be played October 1-13; Two-and-a-half berths in 2016 Olympic Games at stake

Miami (Thursday, February 12, 2015) - The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) today announced that the CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship 2015 will be played in the United States from October 1-13 of this year.

The Olympic Qualifying Championship 2015 -- an under-23 competition -- will send two teams directly to the Olympic Football Tournament Rio 2016, with a third nation earning the right to face South American Olympic qualifying runner-up Colombia in a playoff for one additional spot in Rio. All participating nations will be hoping to replicate the success of the Confederation at the 2012 London Olympic Games, where CONCACAF nation Mexico took home the gold medal from the men's football competition.

"The Olympic Qualifying Championship provides an ideal stage for CONCACAF nations to demonstrate the bright future the Confederation holds on the field," said CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb. "We look forward to some great soccer as the competing nations strive to match our historic Olympic performances three years ago in England, from Honduras and of course Mexico -- 2012 Olympic Champion."

This year's tournament will feature eight nations divided into two groups of four, with the top two finishers in each group after round-robin play advancing to the semifinals. Host venues and ticketing information for the competition will be announced in the near future.

“We are looking forward to hosting the Olympic Qualifying Championship and showcasing the quality of soccer in the region,” said U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati. “The Olympics hold a special place in the hearts of all Americans and this is a great opportunity to see these young athletes from across North, Central America and the Caribbean compete for the opportunity to reach their goal of playing in the Olympic Games.”

The 2015 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship will include host USA, as well as North American automatic qualifiers Canada and Mexico. Those three countries will be joined by three nations from the Central American region and two from the Caribbean, with qualifiers in those regions to be disputed in coming months.

The CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship USA 2015 kicks off on October 1, with group play continuing through October 7. The final match day for both groups, as well as the semifinal date, third-place match and the final, all fall within the FIFA match date window scheduled for October 5-13, 2015, meaning all nations will be able to call on their top under-23 players worldwide for the decisive phase of the championship, should they choose to do so.

The final tournament schedule and kick-off times will be set following the qualifying tournaments in Central America and the Caribbean. The United States also hosted the previous CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship, in 2012, when matches were hosted in Kansas City, Los Angeles and Nashville.

No "bad conditions" excuse to fall back on. Who is coaching this team? Antonio Floro?

Last time around we did well because the tournament was held in the states. Definately an advantage to not have to play in Central America or the Caribbean..... its our kryptonite

How does the last half spot work? Winner of 3rd place game faces off against another confederation? Nice that most of the tournament is during a FIFA window so we can get our best players. It falls right in between the third and 4th round of Concacaf Qualifying.

EDIT: nvm third place team plays against Colombia in march 2016 to decide that half spot... which is the same window as round 4 of world cup qualifying. Interesting if we have both teams playing and Floro is the coach of both with players on both teams...
