Barthez-Battalion
I was wondering this, and I'm not sure what happened in 2011 if it was the same case. Will the roster for this team be filled with older players? The U20 WC is the month before and then during the GC is the Pan Am games. I would assume Floro would want the U23s to be a part of the Pan am games. Are we expecting then to see guys like Petrasso, Henry and Boakai at the Pan Am games during the summer then? madmonte
I guarantee that the Gold Cup will take precedence. Henry will definitely be a part of the Gold Cup squad, not the Pan Am squad for example. Boakai will probably be on the Pan Am squad, and Petrasso I imagine will as well, but it depends, if either does enough to impress... But every soccer manager worth his salt follows that soccer adage, if you're good enough, you're old enough...so the question you are asking is, will he try to split the talent so we have a chance to win the Pan Am games? The answer will be no. The Gold Cup will have the top guys.
rob.notenboom
The answer will be no. The Gold Cup will have the top guys. Gotta think they are going to want to get to the Copa Centanario and so will bring the strongest squad they can to the Gold Cup.
pint
Pan am should be U23 squad minus any players on the senior national team... fill those slots with U20 players or U23 guys who are currently outside the U23 team. Senior Squad in much more meaningful tournament always has to take precedence.
Red and White
Strongest squad definitely has to be the Gold Cup. It's the bigger tournament, and that's before even taking account the fact that it's essentially Copa America qualifying. Thing is, with the youth movement we're currently going through, how much of our 'senior' squad are also U23's? Those players should end up at the Gold Cup. Obinna
Just a thought regarding dunfield, but does the guy deserve a consideration for this squad? Not saying I am a fan, but he is getting minutes at a decent level (SPL) and perhaps the squad can benefit from someone with experience and match fitness heading into summer. I am all for our young attacking talents, like Carreiro, but when we see one start and the other glued to the bench, I wonder if the less talented veterans will be more effective than the kids with enormous potential and little experience. Grizzly
Experience or not I don't think Dunfield is a good enough player to make up for how much of a red card risk he will be in a CONCACAF competition. He is a rough careless player by MLS and SPL standards let alone CONCACAF.

Unbelievable that a pro with a ton of experience, relatively new at a club does something like this so blantantly. He's always been an emotional guy but I'd be furious if I was a Ross County fan. aloyol
I had a similar reflexion when I saw the tackle. Awfull challenge early in the game in the middle of the park by a veteran player....

I most certainly agree about Dunfield but I also remember that in one of our last 2 games ( i think it was against Colombia) JDG made a series of rash challenges and could ve easily seen red on two YC. I doubt I am known here as the biggest JDG fan but his skill level has always been far beyond that of Dunfield and he has never been known for making rash tackles the way Dunfield has throughout his career. It is possible now that he is older and out of game shape he is becoming more prone to that but on the other hand we are talking about a game against a far superior team in Colombia. Dunfield would be a red card worry even against teams like St-Vincent or Haiti.

madmonte
I was actually going to come on here and say similar comments about Dunfield...actually I was going to post it to the Canadians Abroad weekly thread that "knowing Terry, it was probably stupid", but figured I'd get lambasted having not even seen a video. Also, it's a rather harsh comment and Mr. Dunfield is actually a class act and represents Canada well...just...yeah...sometimes...

I think it's more overcommitment than mean though. Wanting to show to the manager he has grit and going too far with it.
Lord Bob
I think Dunfield heard Dundee was holding Carreiro back and decided to take revenge. Proper agricultural football, Terry! Keep up the good work!

Actually it's funny you say that I thought JDG tackled/fouled expertly against Colombia and the Spanish commentators even praised him for the manner in which he was strategically picking off Colombians and playing the role (apologizing, getting them hard from behind but it not looking reckless etc.) Against Panama he had a tackle early on that could have been a red but he was also first to the ball there, it was just dangerous. JDG never has and never will be a red card fear for me, he is a smart player and never intentionally malicious.

My concern with JDG now is that he's older and a fraction of second slower which could in turn lead to late challenges.

Maybe I was thinking about the Panama tackle, like I said I wasn t sure which game I was thinking about. I just remember he commited a lot of fouls and thinking he would be out of the field if it wasn t a friendly. Is there a site where we can full stats for these two games? xcalibre
Wow. The stomp and the leg sweep. Am I the only one (other than Terry) who didn't think it was that bad? If you pause around 0:20 he's pretty close to getting the ball with his leading foot. The "leg sweep" didn't seem intentional as much as the fact that the right leg had to come around eventually with his body momentum, if anything he tried to keep it from sweeping across the player. Still rash mind you, but in Scotland I wouldn't be surprised if it had been a yellow

Alex
My take on it, you're going to see carreiro and petrasso on the gold cup team. I can't see these guys going to the pan ams instead of the senior team since the dates overlap. Gold cup will be the strongest team. If you look at these two guys specifically they will be regulars for years considering their ages now and the first team action they have already had. Petrasso's loan to notts county ends January 14 so we will see what qpr decides after the u20s.
