Suggestion: The Voyageurs Shield

Recommended Posts

Putting this on main board for most traction.

The best thing this group has ever done in my opinion is to create the Voyageurs Cup. With news today that all three MLS teams creating USL-Pro sides I think it's time to repeat the process and create an award that's focused on younger teams.

I humbly suggest we start a fundraising campaign to buy The Voyageurs Shield. We collectively would design it (a shield of some kind to set it apart from the Cup) and, at least in the beginning we use USL-Pro play to award the winner (with a baseline requirement of a certain amount of u23 Canadian minutes required to win).

Unlike when we created the VCup we have an established working relationship with the CSA now. The goal of this project would be to eventually create a fully independent event for u23 Canadian teams.

There are a lot of new Voyageurs that weren't around during the fundraising for the VCup. This is a chance to feel the type of ownership older Vs have with the VCup.

Let's do this...

Duane, I have to say this seems a little hypocritical of you. On twitter you are critical of the whitecaps and others, saying that charging admission to USL pro games will move the focus from development to winning. Then at the same time, you suggest instituting a results based award on what is supposed to be a development pathway? Does winning matter? Is it a focus? Is it a priority?

I don't understand what the criteria would be.

Would it be a tournament or like the Cascadia Cup or Juan de Fuca Plate (and the old VCup format) of an award for Canadian teams in an existing league?

Sounds like something I want to support but I like to know these things first.

A Voyageurs Shield sounds like a great idea to me. I'm confused as to how it would be awarded. Would it be kept to USL-PRO teams? Then it's only open to three, as that league isn't sanctioned in Canada. If NASL expands in Canada as projected, would those teams be eligible? I like the idea of incorporating PDL teams.

I love the idea, but it's kinda vague for me so far.

Yeah, as far as I can tell it would be nearly impossible to include PDL and NASL. I might have to retract my statement of joining this. Not sure why we would suddenly have a Shield for a bunch of farm teams. Right now there are no other Canadian teams in USL Pro. I would prefer to see this Shield for either the NASL or USL PDL. No need to continue to line the coffers of MLS teams.

I'm in and great idea (both of you)

Question is will they even play each other? USL-Pro is a regional setup to keep costs down. TFC2 and Impact2 might be in the same regional league but I doubt Vancouver will be. I suppose the 3 clubs could arrange home and home easily enough.
