jedinathan
I believe they have a $1 million / year shirt sponsor in Fly Emerites. Other than that... Its the Cosmos. Their solution is to throw money at everything. Aside from that, its a nice chance for the other clubs in the NASL to attract people to games when New York comes to town. That being said, it also makes the NASL a bit of a circus/retirement home, which is too bad. A lot of clubs are showing that you don't need to sign old big name players. But I suppose that the Cosmos have to keep up with NYCFC somehow...
mmd
The NASL quality is getting better every year, teams are being added. Hopefully with Stars like RAUL coming over, and also working as an Academy Coach, they have influence of some South American and Eurpoeans that need and want a shot at playing. RUAL will only help the league like Bekham had for MLS. Not to the same degree, but all the headlines is sure making some that have never heard of NASL take notice. And as meantioned before, I love that every team can do what it wants in terms of signings. Unlike what fiasco MLS has going with the single entity. The NASL Comissioner nailed it on the nose. The NASL Clubs need to run their business they way it suits them. It's a free market.

Soccerpro
The Cosmos get 4k fans per game. They can't afford this and are just living about their means.
Blackdude
The Cosmos get 4k fans per game. They can't afford this and are just living about their means. It's not like Raul is that expensive. He scored 2 goals in 17 games in Qatar. Sure, they had the connections and the sales job and it's in New York, but I don't think it's above their means. Sure in Edmonton, it might not break even, but it might in New York due to their massive sponsorship money and cheaper flights to play in NASL

CDNFootballer
How can they afford this? They have rich owners who are also planning to pay 400 million for their stadium development if approved. The Cosmos get 4k fans per game. They can't afford this and are just living about their means. Actually Cosmos averaged 5K fans for 2014 and closed out with 8565 for their last home game of the season last Saturday.Bad scheduling with a Monday game and a few Wednesday's didn't help and they also had more rain than usual on many game days this year which affected attendance. I believe they have a $1 million / year shirt sponsor in Fly Emerites. Other than that... Its the Cosmos. Their solution is to throw money at everything. But I suppose that the Cosmos have to keep up with NYCFC somehow... Thats a big part of it - Cosmos feel they had to sign a big name to keep relevant in the New York market with NYCFC coming into town next year. NYCFC have signed an older star as well with Lampard (turning 37 next June). I think the owner of the Cosmos is some oil Tycoon from the Middle East???? Sela Sports of the Middle East is the Cosmos owner. Rumours are that the Cosmos new Belmont Stadium will be approved soon with the NY elections next week being the reason it was held up. Nice to see that they are paying for the 400 Million stadium development themselves if given the go ahead unlike NYCFC who have rich owners who want public funds for their stadium. Blackdude
And how much do you think he was making in Qatar? The guy is most likely making DP money for an NASL team. More than in NASL. I don't think that he was cheap, but I don't think he's making for Defoe money. He's probably making DP money, but I highly doubt he makes more than $1.5 million. BradMack
I was just watching some NASL highlights and things and came across some NY cosmos stuff and sort of got sidetracked onto them and I just noticed how good they are. They're probably MLS quality. Not good MLS quality like LA or Seattle but probably comparable to some of the lower table sides last year. They owned Red Bulls in the USOC last year and should have had a penalty in the next round against Philly. NASL has a noticeably more European flavor to it in that there are a few clubs that are above all the other ones, I just wish it was easier to watch and more available because it is actually a very interesting league. Lord Bob
The Cosmos didn't actually kick that much ass last year; San Antonio and Minnesota were the best teams. But the Cosmos were hurt by the Senna injury and certainly there were "haves" and "have nots".

Could we do MLS comparisons? Cosmos - Galaxy, San Antonio - Seattle, Minnesota, Ottawa, Edmonton? Just trying to gain more of an understanding of a league I should probably be watching more. Indy, for example, based on their off-field amazingness ought to be much higher than they are and someday will be, but they built a team of Kleberson and why-would-we-need-anyone-else-we-have-Kleberson. Thanks for the insight! Interesting that FCE are a tier above Ottawa. I was under the impression FCE was losing money and Ottawa had a higher payroll. But then again aside from the stadium I think FCE is miles ahead as a club, atleast from what can be seen from afar, they seem to sign players on multi-year deals when they can and their media side is way better. Just wish they could get a stadium.
