madmonte
Hopefully this will be interesting. Okay, create your team of Canadian MLS XI vs World XI. Choose proper formations for the players. Choose substitutions if you like, as well. Who do you sub in and who do you sub out, if you get three subs? Which team wins, and why?
Fullback
Interesting topic! Based on my squads I'd probably think Non MLS wins they've got the better backline by far and while their midfield might be a bit weaker I still think they would come out on top. MLS XI Akindele Issey Osorio Teibert Johnson Bernier Morgan Henry Attakora Ouimette Roberts Non MLS XI Cavallini Ricketts Hutchinson Pacheco Petrasso Edgar de Jong Hainault Jakovic Ledgerwood Borjan
Obinna
-----------------Borjan----------------- Jakovic---Edgar--Hainault---de Jong --------------de Guzman--------------- Ricketts-Hutchinson-Pacheco-Jackson ----------------Cavallini----------------- Subs: Petrasso D. Haber (use) M. Haber (use) Ledgerwood Hirschfeld Piette (use) Gassparotto -----------------Roberts------------- Ouimette---Henry--Attakora--Morgan -----------------Bernier------------------ Teibert----Johnson--Osorio---Nakajima ---------------de Rosario---------------- Subs: Porter (use) Adekugbe Tissot (use) Bekker (use) Gagnon-Lapare Carducci Jackson-Hamel Really tough call on these two, but I think the Non-MLS squad wins out. Backline has far more experience playing together and in general. Better and more experienced keeper. I'd probably give the MLS side a slight edge in midfield, but they'd have trouble dealing with the pace on the wings. Too close though, could go either way. Up top could also go either way. Cavallni and de Rosario are so different but both are equally threatening. I'd actually like to see such a match!
One American
No one is going to use Finlay on their MLS team?
Obinna
I never used Hoilett, Arid, Akendele or Finlay because non of those guys are officially committed to us. If the were they would have all found a place (at least on the subs bench).
Keegan
But you need to pretend it's an international window so you don't get any MLS players you want (Johnson, Osorio, Teibert, Akindele etc.) Now try
Lord Bob
But you need to pretend it's an international window so you don't get any MLS players you want (Johnson, Osorio, Teibert, Akindele etc.) Now try Roberts Adekugbe - Attakora - Dasovic - Yallop Bent - Alderson - Bekker - Gagnon-Lepare Valentine Bekker again That'll probably be good enough, right? I like the mix of youth and experience in your squad. Very ballsy. Very Sven-Goran Eriksson if I do say so...

baulderdash77
The days of this being a debate are almost over now. Almost all the future depth to our national program is coming from the 5 professional domestic pro teams. Every year the domestic pool gets a bit deeper and the number of kids going to Europe instead declines as a viable local option exists.

Lord Bob
There's nothing about kids going to local teams that prevents them from going to Europe at an early age. Hell, look at Dan Stanese. And you may recall that's exactly what our best active player, Atiba Hutchinson, did: came up with the Toronto Lynx, played a year of A-League where he was hilariously above the level, then Europe. baulderdash77
Well the A-League was below the MLS 1.0 in quality so it's no surprise that only 10 years ago there was no real professional options for a large part of the Canadian talent pool. We've come a long way since then fortunately. The vast majority of our quality talent will develop domestically. Yes there are going to be people who travel abroad for various reasons; however if you look at the struggle of some players who left too early I'm not sure if they'd do it over again. baulderdash77
I think we're going to have something similar to what the US is fielding. A team of core MLS players combined laced with select standouts from top leagues in Europe. Part of it is developing a domestic "style" and you're going to get that fielding primarily MLS players. If you built our "top" MLS roster and filled it with a couple guys from Europe I think you'd agree it would be our most reliable team.
baulderdash77
I'm going to do the MLS Core with Europe star thing. -----------------Roberts------------- Ouimette---Henry--Attakora--Morgan -----------------Johnson ------------------ Teibert----Bekker --Bernier---Osorio ---------------Akindele ---------------- Sub in our 3 best European players and you have: -----------------Borjan------------- Ouimette---Henry--Edgar--Morgan -----------------Johnson ------------------ Teibert----Hutchinson--Bekker---Osorio ---------------Akindele ---------------- Not our absolute best XI I'd say that's pretty close. It may be good enough to supplant Honduras as the 4th team in CONCACAF in the 2018 cycle.

Right, that's basically the point of this thread is to point out that it's pretty close to balanced right now. Also to show that there is definitely SOME positive impact from those 5 teams already starting to show. I guarantee you, 10 years ago, some of these kids would never have gotten off the ground or gotten discovered, and would have ended up in that no-man's land that Canadians kids hit after they get past the age of 23. Everyone here basically knows what I am talking about. The more teams we have in Canada at a pro level, and in fact if Garber does indeed get his head out of his ass on the domestic thing, the less of a risk that becomes. One American
The US is basically in the same position. Our best talent is in MLS right now, except for keepers and the Germericans.
