Canada in Copa Centroamericana

What would you think of Canada being part of the Copa Centroamericana as a qualification instead of having an automatic berth to the Gold Cup?

The current format that they use has 7 teams and is now going to be played in the US so the travel wouldn't be as bad.  They also had pretty large attendance in this edition.  With Canada included the top 6 of 8 teams would be included in the Gold Cup so the chances of us not making it would be fairly slim.  Also these are the teams that we have to learn to get points from consistently if we're going to be a world cup team.

We would benefit by having an extra 8 competitive matches (at 2.5x multiplier) added to our FIFA rankings calendar and avoid these huge up and down swings.  It's much better than having friendlies.

I did a bit of math and concluded that for Costa Rica, Panama, Hondoras, Guatamala & El Salvador the Copa Centroamerica adds at least 150 points to their total ranking so we are at a "disadvantage" relative to our contemporaries in CONCACAF because we don't have those points at 2.5x multipliers.

What do you think?

We would all love it.. or even the Caribbean championship.  But it seems we're the ugly duckling.

What we should really be pushing for is a 3 team tournament between us, the USA and Mexico.  Maybe have the 3rd placed team (Aka us) play a two leg playoff against the 5th place Caribbean team.

^ I think it would be ideal to have our own tournament with the USA and Mexico, but I see little incentive for either of them to make that happen, and I think a 3 country "tournament" would be a touch sell from a marketing perspective. We would have to cannibalize a couple of team from the other two. I don't see that happening either.

Little incentive?  USA - Mexico is a cash cow.

I think Canada - USA and USA - Mexico are two matches that should exist every other year through friendlies anyhow and I believe all three federations would agree. Why not squeeze them into an official competition for more ranking points and $?  All 3 nations benefit.

I  remember   there  used  to  be  a  Tournament   called  the  Corona  Cup   in  the  nineties    it  had  Canada,   US ,   Mexico.   If  I  recall   Canada  won  the  tourney     believe  it  or  not.   But  I  would  WOULD   like  to  see  Canada   play  the  Yanks  at  least  once  a  year   and  Mexico   every  other   year.

Yes - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAFC_Championship

1947, 1949, 1990, and 1991.

At that rate, the next one is due in 2032!

A three team tournament with the US and Mexico sounds like a great idea for all three countries. Namely, adding the extra tournament games where we can play with the same FIFA rankings multiplier evens out the playing field with the rest of CONCACAF. It's also extra competitive matches for the three sides to develop (and/or cap) players, giving them experience in higher pressure matches.

I personally don't think any country should automatically qualify for major tournaments such as the Gold Cup, no matter how strong (except perhaps host nations). If this three nation tournament is played every two years, it can serve as qualifying for Gold Cups. Mexico and the US would likely get in often, and we can play off against teams from the Carribean or Central American championships.

There's also the potential for extra competitive USA-Mexico matches, which, as has been mentioned, is a cash cow.

I think the more likely scenario is we join one of the current regional cups. I agree, I would love to see it happen anyway.

Liked this idea so much that I tweeted it to the three associations/federations.

Think any of these associations/federations would seriously consider this 3-team tourney idea?  Despite USA/Mexico matches being mentioned as cash cows, and despite additional games to cap players, I would imagine that both Mexico and the USSF are quite happy with not having to qualify for the Gold Cup. Imagine the embarrassment of potentially (though unlikely) missing out.

Still, would be nice.

Canada vs US would sell out in Toronto for a competitive match with proper exposure. A cross board, north east..Toronto, NYC. Considering the potential on-field talent (relative to MLS), plus nationalism the entire tournament would likely

sell out.

It's just a friendly. I think that the reason we were talking about Canada playing in Copa Centroamericana was for the 2.5 GCQ multiplier. A tournament with US and Mexico would be just two friendlies with no multiplier which would be even worse for us and I don't see why it would benificial to the other two countries since they could just do it themselves without us. And make big money at Jerryworld in Arlington.

It would be beneficial for the US and Mexico because they receive ranking points, sponsor money, ticket revenue etc.

And yes it would be qualifying for the Gold Cup as I proposed that the top 2 teams get in (US and Mexico) while the 3rd place finisher plays a playoff against the 5th place Caribbean team for a Gold Cup spot.  2.5 GCQ for all matches.

So to sum it up from the US and Mexico perspective:

- Sponsor money (TV, tournament name etc.)

- Ticket revenue

- Competitive matches for ranking points (2.5 GCQ)

For us:

-  Chance to test ourselves against the top 2 nations

- Revenue (including the chance to host)

- Exposure

-   4 matches that we've been desperately needing for ranking points (just going to assume we finish 3rd and play the 5th place Caribbean finisher)

USA is always the host !!

USA has already a spot my dear !

A NAFU tournament can be done but not as qualifying for Gold Cup.

Canada have to qualify in Copa Centroamericana or CFU if you want precious ranking points !

They are the host every year, it's not like this is a rotating tournament.. So make them qualify - it would just be a formality anyhow. 2.5 spots out of 3 get in using my suggested format and they are pretty well guaranteed.  At worst they would play a home and away against the 5th place Caribbean team (Guadeloupe? Cuba?) the states won't lose to whoever that team is
