the Humberlands
This may seem like a silly thread to some, and maybe I'm just liking TFC's 2014 season black kits, but I was thinking maybe Canada's away kits should be black. Canada is in revamp mode, and why not have them sport a new look too? The newest home (red on red) kits from Umbro are fantastic. But I'm not really keen on the away kits. The away whites are quite plain and not very intimidating. We're not an intimidating team by any means, but why not at least look the part. At this point, on the road, especially with WCQ coming up, we should use and look into EVERY option we have to be seen as intimidating. Heck, wear hockey mouth guards too (hmm, maybe not). Speaking of which, remember when hockey Canada had the black jerseys? Or the New Zealand All Blacks? Black. Tough. Bitchin' intimidating, even if our play says otherwise. Just a thought. Maybe it's time to give it a chance. White is the new BLACK?

Sam
Didn't the U-20 Team have a black jersey as well when we hosted the U-20 World Cup?
Obinna
I recall that cycle wore black shirts during the friendly against Scotland in BC... so you're probably right.
shermanator
IMO, nothing will look as good as the blue centennial shirt.
ted
You cannot have a red main strip and black as the alternate. One has to be light, the other dark so that when you play against another team you always have a contrasting strip. Red is dark so the alternate has to be mostly white or yellow or a very light shade of another colour.
Ruffian
Right now Mexico has a green main strip and a red alternate. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexico_national_football_team And the red is not that light.
Blackdude
Right now Mexico has a green main strip and a red alternate. Green and red are two different colours.

One has to be light, the other dark so that when you play against another team you always have a contrasting strip. Red is dark so the alternate has to be mostly white or yellow or a very light shade of another colour. That's a very North American home-and-away uniform-centric view. In football leagues all over the world, teams play against each other in colours that could not be characterised as light and dark. So long as there isn't a direct colour clash between any of the three elements of the opposing teams' strips (ie, both teams cannot wear the same colour shorts and/or socks, even if the shirts are different), then the kit is compliant with FIFA laws and the match should proceed. ted
Actually the guidelines I am citing are based not on North America but on the heraldic system in Europe absorbed from the early days of soccer and makes for good TV viewing. The concept of "metal" and "colour" applies as you want the players to be easily and quickly identifiable and that is done by having the greatest contrast possible. Dark vs dark makes for poor contrast. Black contrasts far less that white does against dark colours and would not be allowed. We would still need a light jersey. edit: talking out of my ass there for a minute, sorry.

thescottc
Never been a fan of the use of black in Canada national team jerseys for any sport, but maybe that's just me.

Obinna
I never really liked it to be honest. Well, I liked the maple leaf on it, but blue for Canada just doesn't do it for me. Nice for a novelty though...
Keegan
If people are going to wear it though, may as well promote the MNT. I've seen a handful of people around my town (even last week) wearing the blue kit and/or hat.
the Humberlands
If people are going to wear it though, may as well promote the MNT. I've seen a handful of people around my town (even last week) wearing the blue kit and/or hat. I have and wear both often, usually at work (airport) or in the streets of Durham, and the compliments are abundant. Folks are impressed when they find out what it is. A lot of people also think I'm abnormal for supporting the MNT, usually referencing CSA politics, etc, not knowing much (or anything) about any of the changes being attempted. I know that's way off topic, just strikes a nerve with me. Next!
