The importance of the 2015 Gold Cup?

Considering the Gold cup is nearly a year a way, I wanted to hear from my fellow voyageurs in regards to the importance of performing great/winning the 2015 Gold Cup. Reason why I ask is because it will have two affects on two separate tournaments.:

Copa América Centario - this is massive, and the first time this being done.

CONMEBOL 10 teams + CONCACAF 4(6)teams (US & Mexico automatically qualified)

2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying

Third round, second round, first round

I would hope by this time, playing in the second round wouldn't be important for the games aspect.

But what are your thoughts on this upcoming year?

I'm one of those that will take the Gold Cup as important on it's own, even without the other things you are talking about.  However, the other things are certainly important as well, especially considering that the draw for the 2018 World Cup will take place AFTER the Gold Cup.  Which would mean that moving up in the rankings, and not having to, say, have Jamaica or something in the first round, where only one team can go through.  If the qualifying process is the same, I'd prefer real minnows early, to help build up to the next round and harder teams.  Heaven knows we could use some confidence builders right now, and I'm not referring to Mauritania (sigh)

If our goal is to make the Hex, I would love to face competition in the second round. I'm in the Hex or bust. We saw how they responded after playing minnows last time around. I'm going to use that sentence that I've read too many times on this board. If we can't finish above (insert team that could be in Canada's group), how could we make the Hex?

I agree but we need to actually win the games to gain confidence.

I'm curious as to who might actually start scoring for us. Unfortunately 'no one' is the most likely answer, but at least lately a few of the young up-and-comers seem to be doing alright.

I'm always puzzled by the way many on here approach the Gold Cup. It's our confederation championship and the only way our national team will ever lift a trophy. In the past four years the Canadian Men's National Team has played eighteen competitive games. 18 games in four years! To throw aside six of those as a sideshow is ridiculous to me.

Every other country in CONCACAF cares about it, just look at the TV numbers the Gold Cup gets in Central America. For people that say countries like Mexico don't care about this tournament... well they clearly cared enough to fire Chepo over it. For a team as shitty as Canada we need to care about this tournament.

As a supporter of the men's national team I want to see our team do two things in this order: qualify for a World Cup, win a Gold Cup. I don't need any bonuses to care about this tournament, it is Canada playing competitive football. And in a tournament we have a chance to win (a distant one albeit, but still a chance). What more reasons do we need?

100% agree with all of this.  I was already suprised by the way we didn't seem to care about the last GC, even after it was announced that there was no such thing as an "off cycle" GC anymore.  For the 2013 GC, at least one could claim that there were no competitive matches coming any time soon ... but even then, I was upset that so many players weren't there for a variety of reasons.  If we can't get up for the 2015 GC, then something is seriously wrong.  I want to win the whole damn tournament and shove it in the Yanks/Mexico's faces!

Yeah man that's definitely important too.  If you are referring to Petrasso, I'd sure like to see him get into that fold by then.  Hopefully he's playing football on at least Championship level, if not higher.  I also hope he doesn't end up on some bench too lol

And Sam, I agree with you...the first thing I said was I'm one of the ones that think the Gold Cup is important on it's own, I truly feel that way :)

All   I  want  is    Canada   to  get  better    and  make  to that  next  level  in  World  Cup  qualifying   I    can  not  see   having  a  good  Gold  Cup   making  any   diiference   because  it  really  hasn't  in  the  past   to  be   honest.   I   hoping   that  our  Players   can  develop   in  good  time  .  I   am  liking   the  progress    of   Bekker  Osario  and   of  Henry     at  TFC    and  I  am   glad   that  Tiebert    is  getting  minutes  also.

I'd like the younger players to dominate the squad. Our old guys won't be around for wcq anyway.

We've got some decent young players who actually have some skill rather than the last 20 years of kick and run, "hard working" players.

Give me:

F- Cavallini, REB, Jackson, Caleb Clarke

M- Johnson, Osorio, Bekker, Teibert, Petrasso, Cyle Larin, Simpson(is he recovered and playing these days?)

D- Atiba, Tissot, Henry, Nana, Edgar, Ouimette, Adekugbe

GK- Kenny, Lars and a young 3rd gk

I like that sort of team a hell of a lot more than what we've been throwing out the the last few years.

All of Floro's building and giving young guys a shot has been nice and all, but I think he needs to start focusing on winning because the the 2015 Gold Cup will probably be the most important game(s) for Canada since 1985 for the reasons mentioned above. He's given the the kids some looks, time to start integrating the young players in a winning formula.
