I for one would take Cavallini as TFC's starting striker in a heartbeat. With elite players like Insigne and Bernadeschi on the flanks I bet he scores double figures easily. In that respect, he could statistically be a top striker in MLS. In terms of overall play I don't see him being a top 5 striker in MLS, though. When he entered the league from Mexico, and before he actually started playing for Vancouver, he arguably was in that conversation. I don't think he is anymore, however. He is 3 years older and 3 years off from his peak.

I remember in the 2019 Gold Cup against Mexico, where he ran down the channel onto a through ball and displayed some remarkable speed and strength to hold off Hector Moreno (I think it was) before unleashing a left footed strike onto goal from a tight angle. I remember thinking wow, I can't believe he got the shot off and turned that into a goal opportunity. Cavallini is still a beast and works incredibly hard, but he seems a step slower than a few years ago.

I've always been a fan of his, he was amazing at the 2019 Gold Cup as you said, I think he could of been an all time great for Canada.

I always felt that Vancouver has always had a bad team, and he never got proper service, but normally when he has opportunities he always scores.

He still could very well be - at least in terms of goals (just one away from 4th place)!

I'm not going to fully defend Vancouver, but part of the reason they were bad at times was that that he really didn't bury a lot of his opportunities even when he was given proper service.  He had a bad few years, and some of that was the pandemic, some of that was the team, and some of that was him.  We'll see if he gets back on track with a fresh start somewhere.

They place a Canadian forward in the orbit of Cruz Azul. Will it be a real option?
Guillermo Sandoval msn.com/es-mx/deportes/futbol January 1 2023

Given the need of the cement team for a forward center, former scorer of La Máquina launches a new alternative

Prior to the start of the preseason, the coach Raúl Gutiérrez recognized the need for a center forward heading to the Clausura 2023 . This situation has caused an avalanche of information about the possible attacker who could reach the sky- blue team in the current transfer market .

On the subject, the last thing that has been said is that the player who reaches the Cruzazulino team would not be ready for the start of the tournament, while it is pointed out that the presumed attacker will come from South America. However, until now the long- awaited signing has not materialized.

And in this wave of rumors or options, in the last few hours a new candidate has been placed in the orbit of Cruz Azul. On this occasion, the person in charge of launching a new alternative has been the Argentine Emanuel Villa, a former scorer for La Máquina who has closely followed the issue of hiring the company.

Who is Tito Villa talking about? The option launched by the former Cruz Azul player is the Canadian striker Lucas Cavallini, who after ending his contractual relationship with the Vancouver Whitecaps of the MLS is presented as a free player.

The conversation to which Emanuel Villa joined was initiated by Nahuel Ferreira, a specialist in the transfer market who announced that the Canadian striker is "looking for a new destination."

It should be noted that Lucas Cavallini boasts experience in the MX League, after he played with Puebla from 2017 to 2019. Due to his time in the Puebla team, the Canadian striker played 75 games and scored 29 goals, leaving good feelings.

Is this guy signing anywhere?

Last weeks Northern Futbol podcast said his salary demands were too high for Cruz Azul and Penarol

If he values himself too high, that might be an issue finding a club. I don't see him getting anywhere near what he got with the Whitecaps.

I like him at TFC on a one year deal, and if he produces he can have an option for a higher salary the next season.

Obviously TFC would have to get rid of Jimenez.

I wonder if a club in Turkey or the Saudi or Qatar league is in the cards? If he wants a paycheck, the middle east will allow for that, obviously. Turkey however may pay him a good enough salary while allowing him to play in Europe. It wouldn't be a top team, but I could see him being useful to any smaller club with ambition that is willing to spend.

He’d be perfect for the Middle East. He wants to get paid, he’s still really good and wants to play every day. Has he ever shown serious interest in Europe? Seems all his rumours are MLS and Mexico- even a lifer like Osorio gets Europe rumours.

He's definitely had an eye on Europe in the past. I seem to recall some talk of him moving to Europe before and after he went to Liga MX. There is a quote of his saying that Liga MX was like a "mini europe" since there were many internationals there. I cannot recall the context exactly, but I was left with the impression that he was aiming for Europe and landed on Mexico. Anyone else recall differently?

As for European links, the most recent one I recall was Cavallini to Rayo Vallecano in La Liga. That wasn't even long ago, maybe at the start of the current season? I cannot seem to recall any specific links before that, but I feel like there were a couple.

Was there ever a link to Portugal? Salary demands aside, I think it would be a good league for him. There's an established Latin America - Portugal pipeline, and he's an established Latin American player (Canadian of course, but you know what I mean). His resume in Uruguay and Mexico are impressive - I think the downside is that he's already older now and clubs in Portugal probably aren't shopping for players of his age profile, I guess.

I wonder if the Championship would be a realistic place for Cavallini. I generally think of Iberia due to his playing (and cultural), but his style of play could be very good match for the English Championship.

Obviously, he would thrive in that physical environment, not be deterred by it. He's played at a high enough level to deal with the quick decision making required - he could adapt to it, I think.

Furthermore, I just spoke of the Mexico/SA to Portugal pipeline, but what about the MLS to Championship pipeline? Dike, Kone, Morris & Arriola on loan to Swansea a few years ago, etc. Feels like there are more I am forgetting, but regardless, perhaps there's an opportunity for Cavallini too? While he didn't set the world on fire, he did score 9 goals for Vancouver last year in MLS. That's not terrible by any means. The guy can finish and is still part of the Canadian national team pool, a team that recently participated at the World Cup. He's scored tons of goals for Canada, too.

I don't know, is it just me or can anyone else imagine a fit here?
