Lord Bob
Is "Aspire Academy" Arabic for "Ventura County Fusion"? Then we beat Borussia Monchengladbach? U-16s are weeeeird.
ThiKu
Haha, the Aspire Academy is an exceptionally impressive one actually. Scoring 2 goals on them is better than most do! I gotta wonder though - how did and why did we put so much money into this type of camp? Was it cheaper than South America? Cheaper than Spain? Just wondering aloud. Qatar seems like a long, expensive trip, to play teams of equal stature they can play just about anywhere.

Qatar seems like a long, expensive trip, to play teams of equal stature they can play just about anywhere. The Aspire Academy is pretty exceptional and is basically the Qatari national team. It is what a super rich oil kingdom can do to develop their national team if they have a vision to do so. They have world class facilities and have hired top youth development coaches and indeed top people in almost every field of sports and academics. They also are doing mass assessments of thousands of Qatari kids to find those who have the potential to excel in soccer or the other sports they teach. There are not many academies even of top teams that can compete with this set up. It has obviously been set up to produce some soccer talent so that come 2022 the Qatari national team that will be the World Cup home team will be a respectable team. Their teams are also beating a lot of the top European academy teams on a regular basis, hence our national team kicking the ass of a respectable 1st Bundesliga youth team but in turn getting our ass kicked by Aspire. It is a far cry from the Ventura County Fusion and no it is not the type of competition we can get just about anywhere nor do many other academies have facilities like this. I also would not be surprised if Aspire or the Qatari government is picking up a lot if not all of the costs of us being there. They want their team to be playing strong teams as that is part of their development process.
Lord Bob
I had no idea of any of that. Very interesting.
ThiKu
I believe Aspire won the last youth cup by hammering Manchester United by 4 or 5 goals.

Blackdude
I just have to ask, if they want to play strong teams why invite Canada? Because bringing other U16 teams is difficult and I'm sure that Fonseca has had contact with Qatar.
maccaliam
Canada played a couple of games in Qatar earlier in the year and I suspect this was arranged back then.
