So, the USL Pro looses it's top-team. I guess that means we'll see atendence numbers plummet in 2015.

Everybody saw this coming, however I do think it's a big blow for USL Pro, more so than NASL loosing a team like San Antonio.

Well, FC BECKHAM of MIAMI needs a manufactured Rivalry for next year.

Actually FC Edmonton could also do with one, however anyone living in Alberta would accept that only the Calgary team would be manufactured.

USL will survive with more MLS teams putting in a reserve team in USL pro.

If I lived in either Orlando or Miami I would be offended.

Rivalries happen, they grow, they arise usually because of proximity and/or shared history. There is nothing wrong with hoping a rivalry develops between neighbouring teams and, if it happens, there is nothing "manufactured" about it.

Opportunities for away support make great rivalries. The Cascadia phenomenon helps the clubs and builds soccer culture. It is hard to have a real rivalry between Vancouver and Chicago or New England. Games between Vancouver and Seattle and Portland are fun to watch and make good TV.

That said, maybe it won't happen. Maybe Miami supporters will develop rivalries for some shared incident with Los Angeles or Toronto. It is up to the supporters. The club and especially the league cannot simply create a rivalry out of thin air.

Well, rivalries tend to be among teams that are nearby.

@Yohan:

I'm not suggesting USL Pro will collapse or anything, but Orlando was the team that kept the overall attendence numbers reasonable, without them the gates of teams like Dayton and VSI will keep averages low.

And with adding more reserve teams, the league will look even more like a pure Reserves / Development league instead of an lower league with an own identity. That MLS deal is a bad idea if you ask me.

Having said that, I think they did it right (at least at the presentation level, the rest is to be seen) in Oklahoma. They didn't talk about a USL Pro team at all, it was all MLS in the presentation. That is the way to hamper the NASL team that arrives a year later. NASL? We are on our way to MLS! But as I said, we'll have to see how they perform the first season, I don't think fans are idiots.

Interesting take on the situation. Do you think that AA and AAA baseball suffers because they are seen as reserves/development leagues? Do the lower levels of hockey not benefit from being connected to the NHL?

The MLS deal is a very smart move for the USL Pro and if managed properly will allow them to fight off the challenge from the NPSL.

Are you talking about Orlando City and their "move" to MLS as a bad thing? They are offering fans a real chance to connect with the team that already exists and continue their identity as the the team moves up. This is the best kind of fan-service and rewards fans while encouraging new fans to come aboard for an entire season before they move to MLS.

Looks like Orlando will be keeping their USL team for their reserves.

No I was talking about Oklahoma City Energy FC. I watched the presentation and it was is if USL Pro doesn't even exists. It was all MLS they talked about.

@Ted:

You have a valid point. At this moment in time though, you got a league with Reserves teams in it. I don't think any of the leagues you mention are similar in that aspect. Yes they have affiliations, but no outright Reserve teams. It degrades the league. (Have to admit though, that they probably want to go to a affiliations-system instead of the mixed USL-Pro / MLS Reserves league they have right now.)
