Grizzly 2,792
A bit of a no brainer but nice to see nevertheless, Patrice Bernier is named Impact captain today. http://www.impactmontreal.com/en/news/2014/02/midfielder-patrice-bernier-named-impact-captain
Grizzly 2,792
The Gonzalez signing is now official. We definitely needed another striker but can't say I am really excited about this. Not much experience, most of it is at a pretty low level and I don't have much faith in NDS scouting and talent evaluation abilities. I think we still need a more experienced and dependable striker to play with Di Viao. I hope he proves me wrong though. http://www.impactmontreal.com/en/news/2014/02/uruguayan-forward-santiago-gonzalez-joins-impact

I don't see anything in his background that suggest he should be paid above $100 000.
Yohan 558
Interesting. More Uruguayans to MLS. Is there a fire sale going on down there that I don't know about?

youllneverwalkalone 1,104
I don't know for sure, but it sounds like the Caps Mezquida signing came through Kyt Symons and/or Huw Jennings at Fulham. The Uruguayan trialed there prior to signing with the Whitecaps, but couldn't sign as his work permit was denied. I don't know about Jennings, but Symons was a teammate of Robinson with Wales. Blackdude 616
Impact played its first friendly of the year in a 2-1 win against Orlando. Gonzalez and Romero scored the goals. First Half: Crépeau; Ouimette, Camara, Ferrari, Miller; Bernardello; Mapp, Warner, Felipe, Smith; Di Vaio Second Half: (I assume that Crépeau was in net) Mallace, Rivas, Lefèvre, Meftouh; Nyassi, Laparé, Messoudi, Romero; Di Vaio, Gonzalez

Dub Narcotic 570
Lefevre looked really good, so did Mapp (why does he not get U.S. calls?). Wenger did a decent job as well and Bernadello looked solid. Stopped watching closely when the kids came on but they seemed pretty out of sync.
Grizzly 2,792
Heath Pearce officially signed yesterday. An excellent signing if he stays healthy. http://www.impactmontreal.com/en/news/2014/03/impact-adds-defender-heath-pearce-its-roster Also not sure I buy it, but here is Saputo's explanation of the lack of off-season signings this year: http://www.impactmontreal.com/en/news/2014/03/joey-saputo-blog-we-have-united-group-led-experienced-leadership

BuzzAndSting 3,224
Sounds like Olivier Occean is interested in playing in Montreal. Did you hear that through word of mouth or do you have a link to a source? I think OO is one of the Canadian guys out there who could do really well in MLS... I'd definitely have to invets in a jersey.

Keano 11
Let's play, "Which Argentine #10, If Any, Will Be Unveiled In May As The Third DP, Based On Unsubstantiated Rumours?". Not only does it have a catchy name, it's fun! Obviously it will be either Riquelme, Trezeguet, or Ignacio Piatti, because the internet says so. Can't be Cambiasso because there are too many DMs already. Edited March 21, 2014 by Keano
madmonte 121
Would be nice, Occean is a talented player, and his career is stagnant over there. Would love to see him go home to Quebec.

youllneverwalkalone 1,104
Seems crazy to spend $3m+ a year on a guy who had a a couple mediocre seasons with a small Italian club, who doesn't seem anywhere near the Argentina national team. You could get half a Michael Bradley for that, and you'd still be overpaying.

As for the salary, it's Tony Marinaro who came up with the $3m figure so I wouldn't put too much faith in that number. He's the same guy who said Del Piero to the Impact was a done deal in 2012 and constantly throws out bogus rumors. Edited March 31, 2014 by SteveBeau

Sure the Portland Timbers were crazy to signing a guy who had a couple mediocre seasons in Portugal and Spain where he couldn't play regularly that only got into the Argentina team because it wasn't at a FIFA date. He could be making 3M pesos a year for whatever reason (Which is about $375K US, 25K less than Valeri), = I'll wait until I see the MLS PU's report to comment on his salary or if someone else than Marinaro corroborates to the story. Piatti has scored some important goals leading San Lorenzo, to the coppa libertadores, and viewed by many as that teams best player. Nick Sabetti: Ignacio Piatti would be an exciting signing for the Montreal Impact http://www.goal.com/en-ca/news/4175/major-league-soccer/2014/03/28/4714357/nick-sabetti-ignacio-piatti-would-be-an-exciting-signing-for-the-
Grizzly 2,792
Montreal Impact trade Andrew Wenger for Jack McInerney which seems like a more lopsided trade than Rogers for Magee. How did we manage to trade a striker that can't score for one who can and is 2 years younger? Wenger is from Pennsylvania and McInerney is in the last year of his contract but it just does not make any sense. I am not complaining though, welcome to Montreal and the Impact Jack! The season is starting to look a bit better now. http://www.impactmontreal.com/en/news/2014/04/impact-acquires-forward-jack-mcinerney-trade-philadelphia-union http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2014/04/04/philadelphia-union-trade-top-scorer-jack-mcinerney-montreal-impacts-andrew-w Edited April 4, 2014 by Grizzly
