Womens soccer current attendance numbers

I blame it on Toronto's coach ;). When they came to Ottawa, he complained to the referee because we were yelling stuff like "hack the bone" with a scottish accent. Clearly he prefers playing in silent parks. Disappointing that the referee and the Fury didn't tell him "that's too bad". Someone from the Fury came over at half time and said there was a complaint and that we should stop. Part of the W-League management (and players) don't want it to have spectators I suspect, and those that might like spectators don't a good idea of how to do that and what consequences it will have.

I'd blame Toronto's coach too lol. Does anyone here go to Toronto Lady Lynx games (Rocket Robin I suspect? ;) ). I don't know what he's like at home matches, but our Ottawa supporters group completely blew him off his top in the two games we had against his team this past week. The general policy of 'ignore what supporters are doing' doesn't apply to some coaches in W-League and sometimes PDL. Some get pissed more than others, but I've never seen any coach interact with supporters the way he was yelling at us.

Why do Toronto Lady Lynx have such low attendance?

It takes a special person to threaten to people in the stands to "**** you up" (multiple times) "kick your ass" and "meet me after the game" in response to "we were told not to talk to you" followed by "that is inappropriate sir" "referee, did you hear that? I consider that a threat". If anyone here is associated with the Lynx program for the women, I would recommend getting involved in changing the coaching of that program. A lot of young raw talent on that team does not seem to be getting the best coaching and training, which is too bad. If he cannot keep his cool because a few people are singing loudly over his confusing directions, he is not keeping his cool while providing the really important lessons to his players away from the match.

Needless to say there are going to be some references to the angry scottish man in bytown songs, sorry Lynx but you'll not live down the hilarious insanity of your under-qualified manager.

Was also blown away by Portland's numbers. I can't speak for all of the W-league but I can tell you the problem with The Laval Cometes is the field they play on. It is turf and in suburban Laval. It is also a very small stadium with only one set of bleachers. Beyond the stadium is an open piece of land. Not very inspiring or comfortable for the spectators. I was at the game on Saturday and it was baking hot. No shade whatsoever and no back support in the stands. I would love to see them play at Saputo Stadium or maybe at Claude Robillard. The other problem is that there is ZERO coverage of the W-league in the Montreal media. I had tickets to a game last year that I couldn't attend. I asked a dozen people if they wanted them and the answer was the same from every one of them: We have a women's soccer team in Montreal? It is easy to see why the attendances are so low.

I assume the NWSL teams have reasonable media coverage. Does the league have a TV contract with a sports network?

The Fury is kinda similar - plastic pitch (you can even see a few of the prominent seams, which must be really dangerous) that is out of the way at Algonquin College (though not as bad as the middle of nowhere). The 'stadium' is a bunch of metal bleachers. I think its just cheap because the Fury runs their youth programs there but there is one or two better places to play (uOttawa now has a small stadium, Carleton will have something, and there is the small stadium at Mooney's Bay). There is very little media coverage -hard because Ottawa wants to be a 'big city' and perceives these things as small town stuff so wont promote it. Just like Montreal I presume (but what other sports are there really going on? CFL once and a while? In Ottawa there is NOTHING else).

They show games here on Saturday on local cable Rogers.

The quality -at least live, TV is different- is not bad because the Canadian teams are comparatively well run and put money into attracting players (I think Fury offers some soccer-camp counsellor positions to the unpaid players). Not sure why, but the women's game also tends to highlight the skills of a player more so it can be a bit more entertaining to watch I think.

But how to get people into the stadiums, especially people who haven't been given free tickets by their youth team/club, is a big question.

In Montreal, media coverage of local sports can be summed up like this:

75% Montreal Canadiens

20% Montreal Alouettes (with a small percentage of that going to University football)

3% Formula 1, Rogers Cup Tennis and amateur sport, depending on the time of year. If F1 was year round in Montreal, it would get many times more coverage than the Impact.

2% Montreal Impact

There is no room for anything else as the Canadiens take up more than their share of the pie.

I think that The Impact is now on par with the Alouettes though. Especially in the past 2 years.

I don't agree. I see a lot more coverage for the Alouettes in general. RDS shows all their games live and have several reports a week on the team. The Impact are mentioned when there is a game, usually with highlights of the game but it is rare to see reports on days the Impact aren't playing. Newspapers like Le Journal de Montreal and La Presse devote a lot more space to the Als than to the Impact, although that has improved since they joined MLS.

It's also based on who owns the rights also. RDS does show the hell out of the Canadiens and the Alouettes because they have the rights to every game. They have rights to about 12 Impact games. I don't read often le Journal, but their coverage is pretty good when I read it, although I haven't read it when both teams are in season. I read LaPresse and yes, hockey remains king, but from what I read, the Impact and Alouettes coverage is about the same.
