Colin Miller: Record as MNT Manager

Recommended Posts

Finland, L 2-3

Czech Republic, L 1-5

Ireland, L 0-3

Denmark, L 0-4

USA, D 0-0

Japan, L 1-2

Belarus, L 0-2

Costa Rica, L 0-1

Martinique, L 0-1

Mexico, L 0-2

Panama, D 0-0

0 wins, 2 draws, 9 losses, 4 goals, 23 conceded

Is this the worst international management record of all time?

The matches against Japan and Belarus were managed by Tony Fonseca, NOT Colin Miller. So I think this is now corrected to 0 wins, 2 draws, 7 losses, 3 goals, 19 conceded.

3 goals in 9 Matches!!

I hope Haber is getting a good look from Floro. I thought he worked his arse off, made plenty good runs into space and was open but always missed with the final ball...or simply not even seen/passed to.

This GC was the best I've seen of him as a "Maple" and I surely hope he continues to get called. I think he's a very valuable asset to have in our region where our opponents are often undersized.

He gets good service and he has 2-4 goals in that group stage.

And only goals in 2 of those 9 matches, meaning that we were shut out in 7 of 9 matches with him as coach. Can't be blamed entirely on him, but mostly - it is not as though our players kept missing a ton of scoring chances in the recent run of 6 matches, we didn't create many and those that we did create came off set pieces (at least, when they weren't being whistled down due to phantom fouls in the box by Haber or Osorio, which didn't help).

On the other hand, the only goals we gave up in this tourney were also on set pieces, one of which was also a phantom foul (and same with the friendly against Costa Rica).

Can't wait to see the threads when precisely the same players are precisely as incompetent under Floro.

What a waste of money to hire a competent coach then! Somehow I don't think Cavallini, Hutchinson, Hainault, etc. will be hanging up the phone when Floro calls. Colin Miller has proven himself to be a total disaster. Should have known when his Gaelic pal Rennie ushered him out the door.

Some players are competent and incompetent to varying degrees. However, it certainly does not help any player and particularly incompetent ones to have an incompetent coach at the helm. Lets also not forget that Miller did a poor job of selecting the team and starting lineup so the players on the pitch were more incompetent than needed. When I see our team coached well and not constantly underperforming then I will place the sole blame on our failings on lack of players skill.

Hey, I've made my prediction. There will be no major improvement in these players on Floro's account. I will further add my prediction that we will still get Hainault/Hutchinson/Cavallini situations where players turn down calls when we need them.

I have little question that Floro is a good coach, and I hope he can really achieve something long-term as well as get the best out of our few quality players such as Simpson, Hutchinson, and Johnson who seemed to underperform under Hart.

We'll see. Perhaps I'm wrong; I hope desperately to be. But I didn't see the problem as being that the players weren't trying hard enough or Miller wasn't letting them express themselves or whatever you like. I think there were a few tactical mistakes, things I'd have done that Miller didn't, but nothing serious enough to explain our tournament. And my complaints about player selections revolve around Fonseca's expanded roster and his second division phobia rather than Miller's final 23.

It will be interesting to see that determination ... team coached well... and relate it to the talent on the field, If your a good coach at lower levels clearly you can influence your players and team to play better then they had before, the question with the CMNT players is can a coach make them play better as individuals and then mix that into a system that makes the team play better given the individuals skills and heart.

Frankly its going to be tough road for the new coach, we have a very entrenched negative history with current MNT players, rebuilding the team psyche will be a job in itself, let alone to evaluate current talent and determine if it is wanting, then go out a find replacements.

I would love to see Floro spent time in the U18 and U16 pools coaching on a day to day basis with the youth coaches and getting to know what is in the pipeline, and talking to the provincials about what he wants brought forward to him in the next three years.

Lets hope the communication begins by the next week, time is a wasting as they say.

I agree in that I don't think Floro is the solution to players turning down the call or a lack of offensive creativity in general, and don't think Miller is the problem, but it should perhaps be pointed out that Miller's record with FCE is a little underwhelming when it comes to offensive production (2nd lowest goals in NASL, and lowest shots/SOG by a country mile). I don't think it's a stretch to suggest that lumping it up the pitch for Haber to knock down was a tactic inspired by the Miller's design, so I do think you could argue that Miller wasn't letting them express themselves.

Agree about the 2nd div fobia being a problem.

Let's face it, for whatever reasons, Miller did not have strong squads in his latest stint as manager. Did players turn down Gold Cup because he was the gaffer? Only they know, but I kinda doubt it.

Against Mexico and Panama, we were severely depleted, especially up front. I'm not a Miller fan based on his work in Abbotsford and now Edmonton. He has a strong, strong NASL line up in Edmonton yet his team plays very cautious and route one. Edmonton has 2 excellent fullbacks, particularly Laing on the left, yet they rarely get forward. They have a good defensive record because they play in a shell.

One coach I know who spent time with Miller described him this way: "He's a good looking, outgoing guy with a Scottish accent and pro background. But a pretty average coach, even at the amateur level in Canada".

Bingo! It also helps a ton to have a name like Floro selecting the players, I mean it's gonna feel pretty damn good to have a coach like Floro calling you and wanting you in his side as opposed to Miller. I don't think Cavallini would dare turn down a call from Floro if that situation was played out again. You could also see the look in Aleman's eyes when he was asked about the new coach, I know that sounds cheesy but anyone who saw that interview (from Gavin Day) had to have seen the same thing.

It was seriously painful watching Miller's team. A friend and I were bouncing around bars trying to watch the second half and we both just eventually said "is there any chance we're scoring?" "No." $2.50 patio beers. You know it's painfully obvious when you can watch the first half of an opening group stage match and call that the team won't score a goal all tournament. This team didn't even come close to threatening goal in 270 minutes of football. And that adds up to 540 minutes of football where a team of professionals haven't even had a decent crack at goal under Miller... that's 9 ****ing hours. We could put together a V team that would probably come closer to scoring a goal in that time.

That's it in a nut shell right there. Just listening to his press conferences I'm glad I didn't drink for each cliche he threw out. "Organized" "Tight at the back" "Missing the final ball". Kind of the footy equivalent of the hockey "win the battles" "shots on net" "get those rebounds". All the while having a little grin as if everything is just dandy. Well I guess I would too if I was given a fantasy job for a couple weeks with no consequences.

Miller was very consistent, give him that much.

We have gotten to the point where we have gone so long without a decent coach that people are thinking that nothing can be done, that coaching does not matter. Sure, plenty of good coaches see their teams lose or get relegated, it is not a magic wand. But I suspect we'll see a few things from day one with Floro, and after a year we'll see quite a bit. It is all sort of a moot point, since he does not have to do anything in terms of results until next Gold Cup and then Olympic qualifying in 2015.

Do I think Floro is going to wave a magic wand and turn Ledgerwook into Cafu or even Stalteri? No. However, he may select or find a better option than Ledgerwood at right back and if he does have to use him he will analyze his strengths and weaknesses and employ a strategy that will maximize the strengths and minimize the weaknesses. That is what a good coach does and from his resume it seems like Floro should be a good coach although we have not seen him in action yet. I think a good coach can do a lot for a team but from what I have seen from Mitchell, it is not much better than having you or me as the coach or some other totally unqualified Voyageur to coach. And your argument is basically that the team is so bad it does not matter who is coaching and I think that is ridiculous. Honduras has plenty of weaknesses on their team as well but they always have good coaches and overachieve. They are always play better than they are on paper and we always play worse. Do you really think under a good coach even with this lineup we would get our asses kicked by Martinique?

More than Gold Cup 2015, we are rumoured to have Copa America Centenario to compete for. This may be our best shot in some time to qualify for a major tournament:
