Canada roster update, team on the ground in Seattle

Canada arrived in Seattle on Monday ahead of the team’s second match of the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup against Mexico on Thursday 11 July (local kick-off 20.00).

Upon arrival, the team was greeted by D.C. United striker Kyle Porter who was called into the camp to bolster Canada’s attacking line.

Porter featured in a Canada U-23 camp in 2012 and recently earned his first cap for the Men’s National Team in January of this year. The 23-year-old Toronto-born attacker has featured in 16 matches for D.C. United in 2013.

Striker Simeon Jackson left Canada’s Gold Cup camp on Monday to pursue a club commitment in Europe.

Jackson departed camp with the blessing of the team’s staff.

Miller: “We need to regroup"

After conceding the winner to Martinique on virtually the last kick of Sunday’s 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup opener – Interim Canadian Head Coach Colin Miller held a Monday morning meeting with his players to ensure that the squad refocuses and immediately begins preparations for a crucial Thursday-evening clash with Mexico.

“We’re all feeling very, very disappointed about the way that we lost yesterday,” said Miller.

“We don’t want to make excuses but we are devastated about the result but we now need to regroup as a squad and a staff.”

With its Gold Cup campaign lying in the balance of the next two Group A matches, Canada will not need any extra motivation to get ready for Thursday’s game against Mexico – the highest ranked team in CONCACAF.

A large Mexican crowd is expected at CenturyLink field in Seattle for the match and Miller described the encounter as “a fabulous occasion” with Canadian fans also expected to travel down to support the team.

Mexico, like Canada, suffered a narrow loss (2:1 to Panama) in its first match at the tournament – so both sides will head into Thursday’s clash with extra incentive to come away with a result.

“We have to be prepared for a Mexican team - that like ourselves – will be very disappointed with their result. It’s not very often they lose,” said Miller.

While the Canadian coach stated in the post-match press conference that he felt his players could have been more effective in possession, and that improvements can be made across the board, he refused to criticize his side’s effort and desire in the loss to Martinique.

“We have a lot of character in this group. It wasn’t from a lack of effort yesterday. The players, in some cases, ran until they dropped,” said Miller.

“We now need to get everything back in the tank and be ready for Thursday. “

Canada’s match against Mexico will be televised in Canada on Sportsnet World and Sportsnet World Online (Thursday, 23.00 ET / 20.00 PT).

Panama (3 points, +1 GD) currently sit in first place in Group A, followed by Martinique (3 points, + 1GD), Mexico (0 points, -1GD) and Canada (0 points, -1GD).

Canada will need to finish in the top two places in Group A; or as one of the two highest-ranked third-place finishers in overall play to qualify for the knock-out stages.

Edwini-Bonsu leaves camp, Porter to meet-up with team in Seattle

Striker Randy Edwini-Bonsu left the Canadian camp on Monday morning due to injury.

D.C. United forward Kyle Porter will travel to Seattle to meet up with the team ahead of Thursday’s clash with Mexico.

According to Gavin Day on MLS.com (http://www.mlssoccer.com/goldcup/news/article/2013/07/09/gold-cup-canada-look-take-advantage-mexican-team-who-has-their-backs-against), Johnson still not feeling well (didn't train today) and Teibert also not feeling well (but did train). This is getting BAD.

It's all a conspiracy, everyone in CONCACAF knew we had a shot at......something. So they poisoned our players.

Miller saying he is disappointed to loose! oh please, we were never winning. He should be disappointed that his team didn't beat the hell out of Martinique. Saying what he is saying it really means he was content with a tie. A half decent coach always goes for a win.

Will Johnson has gone home to Portland due to the illness. Will not be available for the Mexico game. Could possibly come back for the Panama game.

Russell Teibert's got some sort of bug as well.

Wow, the bodies just keep on dropping from this squad.

They both have yellows, so it might be better to just rest both vs. Mexico and make sure that they don't get suspended for the Panama match. Of course, then the goal vs. Mexico would be to not get throttled to badly ...

Wow, everybody having the "stomach" flu or something in the Men's National team, all of a sudden?? Must've been the Mexican enchiladas outside the Rose Bowl that they ate :P But in all seriousness, I'm thinking some players have either requested to go back to the there teams, as Canada's chances of qualifying after losing to Martinque are down to nil from 10%. All we need is DeRo, Terry Dunfield and Patrice Bernier being called up ASAP as replacements.

Pffft. Sure seems like we have a real bunch of dedicated players. It will be VERY telling by who returns to play Panama and whether Captain Will takes some responsibility or cops out and stays in Portland with his new love affair. I get that he's captain of Portland and their key player, I really do but I also can't help but feel kind of hard done by as to how he seems less dedicated to the cause since joining Portland. Will owes this program a little more after being on the pitch for the 8-1 loss and being excused from all friendlies prior to this tournament. The fact that he was named Captain is just the icing on the cake and he better be in Denver. There's no way he would be missing 2 Timbers matches with a sickness I'll tell you that.

He's fine in my books at the moment (fine to miss a match, no problem) but I get the hunch he's gonna skip out on the Panama match and that will not be okay for a player that's supposed to be key in 2018 qualifying and possibly captain.

Young Canada side set for clash with CONCACAF giants

Canada arrived at the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup with one of the youngest sides at the tournament – and the team will head into Thursday’s group encounter with Mexico, CONCACAF’s number on side, even younger still.

Captain Will Johnson and mainstay striker Simeon Jackson have both been forced to leave the team mid-tournament – Johnson returning home to recover from illness and Jackson travelling to Germany to finalize a move to Bundesliga side Eintracht Braunschweig.

“When one player goes down it presents an opportunity for someone else to step into the spot and make a contribution,” said Miller.

“Our players won’t need any extra motivation at all on Thursday.

“We know that any player that puts on a Mexican shirt will be of the utmost quality. Anytime you get to play against Mexico it is a special occasion.”

Canada will take on Mexico in the second of three group-stage matches on Thursday night at CenutyrLink Field in Seattle (local kick-off 20.00).

Mexico, like Canada, suffered an opening-day loss on the first day of the tournament, and Miller knows that this is likely to add extra urgency to the Mexican cause.

“In a sense, it will be like we are playing a wounded animal,” said Miller.

“Mexico will be feeling the pressure and they know they will need to get a result. We are also anticipating that there will be a strong contingent of Mexican support at the match – so by no means are we underestimating the magnitude of the challenge."

Miller, who captained Canada during his playing career, was noted for his determination in midfield – and the Canadian boss is looking to his players to put in a similarly committed performance against the best team in the confederation.

“Everything we have to do starts with the right attitude,” said Miller.

“Discipline in keeping our shape and commitment to the defensive cause is essential when you are playing against a team of this quality.”

The Canadian team are also without striker Randy Edwini-Bonsu who departed camp on Monday due to injury.

The team called-in D.C United forward Kyle Porter on Monday. Porter started training with the team on Tuesday and will be available for selection on Thursday night.

Julian De Guzman will captain Canada in the absence of the appointed tournament captain Johnson.

Following the match against Mexico, Canada will travel to Denver to close-out group play against Panama on Sunday 14 July.

Notes:

•Canada has an all-time Gold Cup record of 1W-0D-2L in three tournament matches against Mexico dating back to 1993.

Something to cheer us up in the future I hope:

CALEB CLARKE ----> Whitecaps FC loan Caleb Clarke to FC Augsburg

http://www.whitecapsfc.com/news/2013/07/whitecaps-fc-loan-caleb-clarke-fc-augsburg

CONSIDERING HE IS 20yrs old I am soo Happy for us right now:

VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that striker Caleb Clarke will join German Bundesliga club FC Augsburg on a year-long loan.

“Caleb is a young player with a lot of upside," said Martin Rennie, Whitecaps FC head coach. “This is a great opportunity for Caleb to continue in his development and we look forward to seeing the progress he’ll make while with FC Augsburg.”

Clarke, 20, will train and play with FC Augsburg's U-23 side and will also have regular training sessions with the club's first team of the top flight German Bundesliga.

The native of Richmond, BC, joined the Whitecaps FC Residency program in September 2009 and went on to sign a Major League Soccer (MLS) contract as the club's sixth Homegrown player on April 24, 2012.

Last year, Clarke made his MLS debut at home on August 15, 2012, against FC Dallas, coming on as a late substitute for fellow striker Kenny Miller. Clarke also made a substitute appearance against Chivas USA on October 3.

In addition, the 6-foot-1, 165-pound striker made five appearances for the ‘Caps in the MLS Reserve League. With Whitecaps FC U-23, Clarke scored five goals in seven appearances in the United Soccer Leagues (USL) Premier Development League (PDL). Clarke also helped the club's U-18 Residency side make it to the 2012 United States Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) championship final, scoring 24 goals in 27 appearances over the course of the season.

Internationally, Clarke has had experience with the Canadian national team at the U-18 and U-20 level. In December of 2011, Clarke earned his first call-up to the Canadian national team program when he was one of five Whitecaps FC Residency players to be selected by former Whitecaps FC player and assistant coach Nick Dasovic to a 10-day training camp with Canada’s U-20 national team in Sunrise, Florida. In September of 2012, the striker netted both goals in a 2-0 friendly win for the U-20 team over Trinidad & Tobago's U-20 squad back in September of 2012. Most recently, Clarke scored twice against Nicaragua in the 2013 CONCACAF U-20 Championship on February 20 of this year.

This is the young Canadian’s third stint in Germany. Earlier this year he had a pair of trials: with FC Augsburg between May 13 to 17 and at Dutch club Feyernoord Rotterdam between May 20 to 24. In 2012, two months after signing an MLS contract with the ‘Caps, he went on a two-week trial with FC Rot-Weiss Erfurt of third-tier '3.Liga'. He has also enjoyed two training spells in Italy with Udinese Calcio in August of 2008 and from April to May 2009.

At least the departures may force Mitchell to do about the only possible good thing to come out of this tournament now, the capping of Aleman. And it may also force him to do the decent thing of playing Pacheco so he doesn't get pissed off at the program for flying him across the Atlantic to play for 3 minutes while worse players than him are starting.

I dreamt we were leading Mexico until like the 80th minute then quickly conceded two goals... So that's something I guess. You know it's bad when my dream didn't even let Canada win... Or maybe it was a very subtle nightmare, I don't know. :D

Should be a massively fun game to watch if we played the way we did against Martinique... /sarcasm
