Rocket Robin
Result and details of the Friday July 5th, 2013 CSL game between Serbian White Eagles and York Region Shooters played at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke at 9:00pm. 21 min...YRS Richard West GOAL...YRS Francisco Javier Perez from 40 yards rolls pass up middle and West on right takes low 12 yard shot into left corner of net with goalie Stefan Avramovic guarding middle of net. 39 min...SWE Daniel Chamale draws Penalty kick when tripped up after SWE Djorjije Strunjas passes ball from right and low 22 yard shot up middle was blocked by YRS Tristan Jackman but not cleared from 8 yards and Chamale is tripped on right edge of 6 yard box. Referee Jeff Fearnall pointed to the spot. 40 min...SWE Ramon Bailey GOAL...Bailey rolls Penalty kick into right corner of net as goalie Adrian Ibanez dives left. 46 min...YRS Matthew Rios GOAL...Rios is tapped pass by YRS Darryl Gomez from left and he blasts 12 yard shot into right side of net. Final Score:....Serbian White Eagles.......1....... York Region Shooters.............2.......... Attendance was about 100 on this hot and humid night with the setting sun not a factor in the opening minutes. Referee Jeff Fearnall gave out one Yellow card to each team that I counted on what wasn't a rough game although there were a few injuries. Shooters had more of the possession in this game and the more dangerous shots. They limited the SWE shots and broke up a lot of passes by stepping in front of them as SWE players waited for the ball to roll to them. shooters never seemed to take anything but short cornerkicks and quickly too but couldn't catch SWE off guard. Richard West played for Serbian White Eagles last year and led the team with 15 goals. Today he was up front with Shooters teammates Ali Hamam and Matthew Rios. Francisco Javier Perez who is new to this year's team was feeding them passes from the midfield. Best non-scoring chances of the game were at 16 minutes when SWE Ramon Bailey took a 28 yard freekick from the right that had SWE Goran Vlaski tip a 15 yard shot just wide right of the net. 58 minutes had YRS Nicolas Martinez take a 20 yard shot that hit the football bar just a foot above the soccer bar. 78 minutes had YRS West steal a ball off a defender at 30 yards and run up the middle and in alone shot just wide left of the post from 15 yards. 81 minutes had YRS West given a through pass on his own side of center and he rushed to 15 yards and shot and the goalie saved it with his face taking the brunt to block it. White Eagles record falls to 2 wins, 5 losses, 1 tie while Shooters improve to 5 wins, 2 losses, 1 tie. Both teams have games on Sunday with White Eagles travelling across town to play Astros Vasas and Shooters hosting Windsor. A shuffle in the start times means it may be possible for me to see both games. Rocket Robin robing@eol.ca
Rocket Robin
Results and details of the Sunday July 7, 2013 CSL game between Astros Vasas FC and Serbian White Eagles played at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York at 4:30pm. 54 min...Astros Joey Melo GOAL...Melo passes forward to AV Tristan Watson who shoots from 15 yards on left and hits the right goalpost. The ball deflects back into the box and Melo shoots 8 yarder into middle of net beyond goalie Goran Velimirovic. 93 min...SWE RED card...Vitomar Jelic earns a direct ejection for holding on to charging Tristan Watson on his run from 50 to 30 yards pulling on his jersey and jostling him the entire way. Referee Justin Tasev signalled to play advantage but when Watson was finally knocked over, Jelic was sent off as the last defender back. Final Score:...Astros Vasas FC.......1........... Serbian White Eagles..........0........... Attendance was about 30 on this hot, humid, and overcast afternoon. It had rained in the afternoon then rained hard from the 7 minute mark stopped then rained hard again at the 40 minute and 77 minute mark. I didn't notice when it slowed down enough that I could notice the times when it started pouring again. Referee Justin Tasev gave out only one Yellow card to each team that I counted at 87 and 91 minutes and then the Red card at 93 in a game that wasn't rough. Astros Vasas played their first game in their new all red kits with gold numbers. This makes them look exactly like the Vasas team in Hungary. There'd been a long delay for the equipment to arrive. I'd say the difference between Astros and White Eagles when they played May 17th in Etobicoke (the only other game I'd seen Astros in so far this year) was the addition of players Joey Melo and Tristan Watson. Joey Melo played for Mississauga Eagles in the CSL for the last few years (and on MLS Toronto FC during 2007 and 2008). Watson is from Brampton and stands 6'4". SWE won their previous meeting 3-0. Astros had been shutout in their previous three games. Today's win (at the time this game ended) slingshots them from 12th (last) to a tie for 8th (the last playoff spot) with White Eagles. There's four good teams creating a gap between themselves and the rest of the pack. Best non-scoring chances were at 9 minutes when AV Joey Melo rolled a pass forward from 15 yards and AV Jose Ludelino Goncalves De Sousa shot wide left from 5 yards. 35 minutes had AV De Sousa take a cornerkick from the right that the charging AV Melo was not able to fully connect on a diving header and it went wide left of the post from 6 yards. 42 minutes had AV Kevin Dhillon blast a 35 yard shot down the middle that the flying goalie punched forward. An AV player got to the rebound and was called offside. 48 minutes had SWE Djorjije Strunjas's 40 yard freekick from the right just be over the head of a leaping SWE Milan Beader at 15 yards and the ball continued wide left of goal. 50 minutes had SWE Habib Bundu's low 25 yard cross get SWE Nilola Miodrag on left shoot a low 12 yarder that the goalie pushed wide left of the post. 53 minutes had SWE Bundu cross from 22 yards on the right and Miodrag headed the ball over the net from 8 yards. 66 minutes had the AV goalie block two SWE Beader blasts from 15 yards point blank down the middle. 75 minutes had SWE Ivan Stankovic take a 35 yard freekick from the left that SWE Vitomar Jelic headed from 8 yards on the left into the outside webbing of the net. A minute later SWE Strunjas received a pass from SWE Stankovic and booted a 6 yard shot over a sliding defender and over the net. 81 minutes had SWE Miodrag cross from 45 yards on right and SWE Stankovic nodded a 10 yard header that the goalie caught. This game was recorded by Rogers Community channel for later rebroadcast (maybe next Saturday or Sunday night) in the Toronto area. Dana McKiel provided the play by play and Enio Perruzza (the usual PA announcer) was the colour commentator. I like a more "#10 passes to #20" type of commentary instead of history stories that have to be broken up (and sometimes they weren't) when a shot was taken. Both have long histories for soccer in this city. I helped feed them the subs (these are strong binculars I carry) and straightened up the Red card incident. But then lately I've been annoyed by the MLS caller Luke Wileman giving full recaps of the scorelines or next game played or last game played every five minutes of game time. A perfect punishment in Hell for him would be that he be forced to give an entire recap of a basketball game--all 185 points. Anyway, I should just be grateful that this CSL game is shown at all! Both teams had played games on Friday night and lost. Astros were defeated 2-0 in London and White Eagles lost 2-1 to York Region Shooters. Shooters played one hour after this game ended giving me enough time to drive up there and catch their game against Windsor. DJT
Astros Vasas played their first game in their new all red kits with gold numbers. This makes them look exactly like the Vasas team in Hungary. There'd been a long delay for the equipment to arrive. They wore those kits in the June 23 game (broadcast by Rogers the following week). I'm surprised that Melo ended up on Astros Vasas and not a better team. Rocket Robin
Result and details of the Sunday July 7, 2013 CSL game between York Region Shooters and Windsor Stars played at St Joan of Arc Catholic High School in Vaughan at 7:30pm. 55 min...YRS Richard West GOAL...YRS Matthew Rios passes forward up middle from 30 yards. West gets ball and cuts arond defender to take low 18 yard shot into right corner of net over diving goalie Anthony Santilli. 60 min...YRS Ali Hanam GOAL...YRS Richard West on right centers pass from 35 yards and misses YRS player running down middle. Hanam trailing on far left follows up and is in alone at 25 yards and shoots low into right corner of net. 86 min...YRS Ryan Dummett GOAL...YRS Kadian Lecky pokes ball away that was loose in box and goalie had called for. Lecky then taps ball over to Dummett and his low 12 yard shot has goalie get piece of but ball rolls under him to center of net. Final Score:...York Region Shooters........3... Windsor Stars........0......... Attendance was about 80 with rain falling most of the first half. Referee Manuel Orellana gave out only one Yellow card that I counted and that was at 10 minutes when he booked YRS Richard West for diving in the box when the goalie dove for the ball. West went down for an injury on the play but returned to the game. Orellana's son Alex was a referee's assistant. Most of the first half was played in the Stars' end. Stars only had three outfield players and a goalie on the subs bench and one of them was the manager. I wouldn't expect them to be home until 1:30am on the four hour drive home. Adrian Ibanez earned the shutout for the Shooters having to make only a few key saves. He was well protected by the defensive line of Ricky Herron, Fitzroy Christey, and Dino Gardener. The team has only allowed 8 goals in 9 games (second only to Toronto Croatia). Diego Hernan Maradona came into the game at 82 minutes to replace Richard West. The middle name now shown on lineups will go far so Googlers won't confuse him with his famous uncle. Richard Edwards will be on the Shooters by their next game after weeks of negotiations. The 29 year old midfielder played earlier this year for Harbour View and has been capped by the Jamaican national team 24 times. Best non-scoring chances were at 6 minutes when YRS Ali Hanam charged for a 25 yard cross from right and shot an 8 yarder up middle over the net. 20 minutes had YRS Matthew Rios dribble in to 25 yards down middle and shoot that the flying ogalie caught on the left post. 32 minutes had YRS Nicolas Martinez crossing from 20 yards on the left and YRS Rios at 12 yards along right end line head ball to center and YRS Richard West's bicycle kick from 10 yards was just wide left of the post. 53 minutes had WS Stephen Ademolu run down the middle and passed to right for charging WS Micheal Kio who shot low 22 yarder that goalie dove to block then crawled to smother rebound at 10 yards before Kio could get to it. 81 minutes had Desmond Humphrey in middle roll the ball forward and right to YRS Kadian Lecky in clear and his 18 yard shot had the sprawling goalie right post deflect the ball wide right. 84 minutes had YRS Leckie shoot and the goalie sprawled to make a point blank stop and a YRS player's follow up shot was stopped by the prone goalie. Shooters record improves to 6 wins, 2 losses, 1 tie after this weekend's wins against Serbian White Eagles and Windsor. They are in 3rd place. Stars record drops to 3 wins, 3 losses, 1 tie. They beat Burlington 3-0 in a home game on Friday. They are 6th in the standings but hold between 1 to 3 games in hand on all the teams ahead of them.
