Mason Trafford

He moved from Finland to the worst team in Chinese 2nd level. In January, there was some optimism that he could contribute at the NT level, so this move was really disappointing. Does anyone have any idea why he went this route? Could he really not have found anything better!?

Once-capped Mason Trafford chose Chinese adventure knowing it would hurt Canada chances

Trafford, who grew up Vancouver, made his international debut in January coming on as a second half substitute against Denmark, but he acknowledged his chances in the international set up may be hurt by his move to China.

“For sure my chances for further national team call-ups are affected being in China," said Trafford, who also noted that the simple issue of lack of information on the Chinese second tier is also a factor. "Playing for Canada was a dream come true for me, it’s every player's dream to play for the national team.”

The potential implications of his move were fully understood by Trafford beforehand, though.

“It’s definitely something I knew and recognized when I signed here," he admitted. "I figured that this could make things difficult for my Canadian future.”

He leads Sandor's ranking for regular season North American (MLS + NASL) minutes for a Canadian. http://the11.ca/overwhelmingly-canadian-powers-rankings-mlsnasl-final-standings/

Despite this, his cousin playing in the Polish 5th tier (says @Toje ) is the one invited to camp?

He (Charlie Trafford) hasn't had much of a shot with the first team as of late, and has been playing with the reserves in the Polish 5th tier.  He started and played 53 minutes for Korona II over the weekend.

:o

What does Mason Trafford have to do to get the call?

Deserved a call while playing well and a lot in NASL and still does but instead players who weren't playing or playing very little like Ouimette, James and Vitoria got called. Next coach needs to call players who are playing, simple as that.

Faackk and this is my biggest problem with player selections. A lot of unwarranted call-ups for yearrrsss.

Not to sound harsh, but the reality is we have yeaaars of failed players who have had years of holding an unwarranted to spot (Haber, Straith to name a few). Its time for a 40+ man camp, and pick from the best, because as far as I see we have about a 50+ mediocre pros all on the same level, and all playing on the same level....theres only about 10 players who should have a "spot" on the team. Hoilett, Hutchinson, Arfield, Edgar, Borjan, Larin, Ricketts, and De Jong should be the only players.

Tired of Piette, Straith, Haber, Ouimette, Bekker, etc getting these chances to play for the NT team and haven't done anything better in their career then the up and coming pros. Its beyond annoying now. /rant.

Trafford interviewed with Steven Sandor recently, where he indicated there had been no contact with the national team.

Trafford is visiting family in Vancouver during the break between the spring and fall NASL seasons. But while he enjoys his time back in Canada, he hasn’t had the chance to play for this country’s national side since 2013, when he got a few minutes in for a friendly against Denmark. “I definitely feel a bit passed over,” said Trafford. “It’s something that used to get under my skin,  but it doesn’t bother me now. There really hasn’t been any contact with the national team. And, from what I know, there hasn’t been any contact between the national team and Miami FC. And, well, our coach is Alessandro Nesta, and he was one of the best ever to play the position; I’d think there would at least be an introductory phone call made.”

But Trafford understands that there may have been one game that cemented a negative view of himself with the people in the Canadian soccer hierarchy. When he played for Ottawa two seasons ago, the Fury faced FC Edmonton in the opening round of the Voyageurs Cup. Trafford knew the Canadian brass were watching. He pushed to be in the lineup even though he was probably too sick to play. He had what he called one of his worst-ever games, and wonders if a low point in his pro career came exactly at the wrong time, in front of the wrong people.
