What was right what was wrong on Game Day for Canada vs USA

Right....

Gossip pre-party, swag for sale, and swag given away, great job by Jamie and his multitude of volunteers.

March to stadia ...not bad, the downpour did not dampen any spirits... and might have sobered a few up let them have BMO beer.

Right, display of flags in south end, hard to tell the affect from inside, but it seemed good.

Wrong, CSA having music played over sound system to compete with supporters chants, hard enough to be a Capo with lots of new faces, but even harder when you have a stadium DJ playing songs, but what was worse is she/he was not playing Canadian songs or appropriate songs for the game and venue, no Kanann.( he from Toronto with a massive hit "Wavin Flag" ) when you have known that there was to be flag display, CSA marketing guru.. thats a miss, take some responsibilty for that, No "Raise a Little Hell" for those of us who are bit older, No "American Woman" in any case you get the theme, this is down to CSA folks, please do not tell me it is out of their control, a sold out stadia and they still do not get it.

Right, the American couple sitting front row of 114 who realized they were in supporters section and got up and moved.

Wrong the girl in row four seat 24 or 25 of 114 who was cheering for the Americans.

Wrong those who still come to national games wearing TFC jerseys, Manchester United Jerseys ( even worse ) and club jerseys..yes i get why clubs do it but the club in Stony Creek did it right making up their own tee-shirts for the game and having the players wearing red, with date of match on jersey etc... well done.

Wrong, not enough attendants after the game to direct traffic out of parking lot.. if you pay 20 bucks to park after the game the attendants should help direct traffic to the street then the Toronto police should direct flow out onto Lakeshore etc.

Right .. getting to raz Squizz in person, right the former national team members on men 's side Greg Sutton and Paul Dolan talking to fans and especially Paul Dolan taking time to talk to some of the young female players introduced to him.

Wrong... today's media coverage that really seems to ignore the technical aspects of the game for generalized reporting .. i.e. sellout, Leroux etc. can we not have a write up in the Globe on the game on the pitch who did well who crapped out and why ?

This was a very different crowd.

The men's crowd get the no club gear thing. This group will take some time.

People were loud, but with that wind it's hard to hear yourself think...let alone getting people going.

+ Amazing job Jamie and crew did at Gossips (swag and door entry, very hospitable, looked professional)

- Gossips limited menu, and they needed more than 2 servers (although they were personable)

- I should have gone around at Gossips and asked each table to show thir pride and taken pictures of groups (so we'd have a record)

- There wasn't any pregame practicing of chants, or maybe I missed it

+ Capos!!!!!!!!

- More megaphones

+ Handing stuff out to folks was FUN! Talking to them, getting them hyped. My girls really enjoyed it

+ Tifo looked amazing, at least from the southend

- Damn camera crews didn't capitalize on the shows from the southend (very little camera coverage)

- The lady behind us that thought we should be sitting down (duh, you're in the wrong section then lady)

+ The people in front of us who were NEW to being supporters for anything, who said "WE HAD THE BEST TIME OF OUR LIVES"

Right: the pregame party, march, ect. were great

Wrong: many of the people around me (upper half of 114) either didn't know the cheers, or weren't participating. Not much we could have done about that other than the paid members only for tickets which I'm sure helped. We'll know for next time.

Wind was a factor. Audio in the stadium is bad enough for getting people together, wind makes it bad.

Also the songs were too complex, people were eager to get involved. It needed to be visual, and simple.

Apart from the result, everything was right.

This is the first game I've gone to since joining the Voyageurs. It was the first 'big' game like this for my teenage daughter and she's wondering when the next is she can go to.

A huge thank you to Jamie for everything, especially saving us a couple of tickets, and for everything else that he tirelessly does to make things go well for the supporters.

Right: despite a sold out stadium, the line up at men's bathroom were shortest ever! :D
Oddly the line-up at the womens (in the south end) was virtually non-existent (I had plenty of time to observe standing in the line at the food stand for 30+ minutes to get French Fries ... is it normally like that ... I'm not normally trying to please a 5-year old ...).

Perhaps there's just less beer consumption and less bathroom visits.

You would have to be stupid to pay retarded amount of money for Bud. Although I did feel sorry for the beer guy in 112 trying to sell some Bud and his catchphrases were rather clever

I found this game had a much different feeling then the previous men's WCQ games. Was great seeing BMO filled to capacity. Some negatives were many people didnt know the songs to chant a long at the upper section 114 area. I was also next to man, that wasn't dressed in red...so I asked what he was doing. He unfortunately told me that he got the tix just off a scalper outside!

Yohan, sidenote: That guy is a pro in the east stand usually and with this game they tried to service us supporters as well. I'll dole out a tonne of props to this guy because he toned it down during the match but just as the half ended he erupted into his usual spiel that he knew would annoy/take away from support.

Now thinking about it he probably preferred being amongst since we repped the drinking majority of the stadium haha

I agree with much of what has been said here about what went right. For sure the pre game at Gossip, the flag display, the passionate support; well pretty much everything that the Voyageurs organized. (Gets dislocated shoulder from patting ourself on the back ;) ).

Those things that were wrong, or could have been better, were mostly in the control of the CSA and/or the stadium management. Having said that, they (CSA & BMO field) did some good stuff too. I definitely agree that playing of irrelevant songs over the PA was annoying and interfered with the supporters chants. If you want to play music, then limit what you play and make it relevant. Like Trillium said, this would be a time to go with CanCon music. Something like American Woman, followed by Taking Care of Business and then Raise a Little Hell. Stuff that everrybody knows and can get into and will add to the crowd atmosphere rather than neutralize it. Lots more examples of songs, too many to list here but maybe some Stomping Tom, Tragically Hip, etc.

I think that this a sympton of CSA snobbery or aloofness, where some people over there feel they are above the "unwashed masses' of supporters or the many volunteers that make soccer run across the country. They are already headed that way for the 2015 WWC with the people they are hiring to run the LOCs in the various cities. In Edmonton, I know many people who have experience from participating on the LOC in 2002 (U-19 WWC) and 2007 (U-20 MWC) who are being shuut out of the process and being asked to turn over all their knowledge to these new hires with no background in the Canadian soccer communities. You know, the actual fans who know what works and what doesn't. Nah, why would you ask them what they think.......

Hey all

finally got to processing the pics I snapped on Sunday.

Wish I had taken more, there was so much I could have taken of -- I didn't know what I'd get up to over the course of the afternoon, flags and stuff.. so I wasn't completely focused on it (happy to be involved of course!)...was a good day.

So what was right about the day? All of this:

Enjoy
