New D3 pro league

Recommended Posts

If the USSF's D1 and D2 are OK for Canadian teams to enter, I see no reason why the USSF's D3 and D4 levels shouldn't be used as well to make soccer viable as a high profile spectator sport in a wide range of different Canadian cities, without any moratoriums being issued from Ottawa to maintain the fiction that some mythical national pro league is just around the corner. If, as now appears to be the case, semi-pro soccer is being handed over to the provincial associations so that U-23 leagues can be set up in and around Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, it's a completely separate issue from leagues like MLS, the NASL, USL Pro and PDL that span geographical areas that are significantly larger in scope than a single Canadian province. Confusion could be eliminated by dispensing with the D3 terminology that misleadingly makes it sound like something comparable to USL Pro is envisaged when it's really the niche previously filled by CSL that is being addressed.

AMEN. If an investor wants to put a team in a city like Hamilton or Quebec City, it would be silly to tell them to wait for a regional D3 that may never come.

First off, I think the USLPro route would be a better idea but I have to correct you: there is, in fact a D3 in both Quebec and Ontario right now.

In 2014 both cities will be within the geographic area of a sanctioned regional D3 league regulated by their respective Provincial Associations.

I would be happy to see these two leagues sanctioned as D4 leagues which is where they realistically should be placed in the pyramid but current CSA policy is still calling them D3.

You can thank the CSA for the confusion. They commissioned a report into setting up a D2 which told them the best they could do was a D3 so they turned around and said they were getting out of the D3 business and decided to put lipstick on a pig and call the L1O and PLSQ D3.

D4 designation is amateur I think so since some players in the CSL and PLSQ are paid their league's wouldn't fit that designation. Wouldn't help sell the league either not that there's many coming to see them at the moment anyway.

All that is an easy fix:

MLS: Premiership Super Extra Duper Major League Soccer

NASL: D1 and any "future" Canadian D2 leagues I meant D1

USL Pro: D2

L10/PLSQ: D3

:)

All that he CSA has to do is to rebrand the leagues levels. It seems obvious and simple yet shi t like that seems to take forever.

Fair enough. Though as you say, USL Pro looks the better option, and I'd even argue the two can co-exist. To deny that would be like saying Toronto FC should have just concentrated on joining the CSL as they were designated as Canada's top/first division around that time.
