Whitecaps recall Mitchell from FC Edmonton for Portland match

The Vancouver Whitecaps have issued a one-game recall for defender Carlyle Mitchell.

The Trinidad and Tobago central defender has been a regular starter for FC Edmonton this season. He is on loan to the Eddies for the 2013 campaign. But, with the Whitecaps in roster difficulty with the suspension of Johnny Leveron for this Saturday’s match against Portland, and the Eddies being on a bye weekend in NASL, the conditions were perfect for a Mitchell recall.

FCE confirmed that Mitchell is scheduled to return to the Eddies on Sunday.

“With our team having had a very busy schedule of late and with Johnny Leveron suspended for this match, we felt it was a good time to call Carlyle back into the team,” said Whitecaps head coach Martin Rennie in a release issued by FC Edmonton. “He has been doing quite well with Edmonton, so we’re pleased to have him available this weekend.”

Interesting to see they can bring him back on such short notice and return Sunday? Wonder how many times they can do that thru the season?

That's the nice thing about having players loaned out on reasonable terms to a team that is a one hour airplane ride away. I think he will bench cover for O'Brien & Rusin. Unless one of them is injured I don't see Mitchell starting but still nice to have. From the sounds of it things just worked out good for both teams on a timing thing. I think FCE would have first choice but with no game might as well let him go.

If Johnson is on the left, and Teibert is on the right, we might get to see some fun Canadian interplay here and there. Looking forward to that. I know a lot of us had similar fun watching Attakora and Henry battle each other on set pieces, and THAT got pretty bloody (literally).

Oh and when it comes to Mitchell leaving FCE I'm cool with that, I'm kind of a Mallan Roberts fan, so this opens up opportunities for that guy. Especially since Roberts could have been set to further slide down the depth chart with the impending return of Albert Watson.

I've been really impressed with FC Edmonton's defensive core, particularly Edward and Laing, actually, so I don't think they lose a lot with Mitchell going away.
