Gian-Luca
http://www.thestar.com/sports/tfc/2013/04/24/canadian_championship_toronto_fc_downs_montreal_impact_in_opening_leg_of_pointless_sideshow_kelly.html Mind you, Kelly also criticizes TFC for having a "let's win" mentality, which pretty much sums up how seriously we should take Kelly's comments. Still, I thought I would draw attention to this slap in the face of the V's & Canadian soccer for those interested.
Lord Bob
Who gives a ****? It's Cathal Kelly. I suppose there's probably two people who just moved to Canada and don't know he's worthless yet, but for the rest of us this shouldn't be an issue. Keegan
Yes, winning our nation's only cup and qualifying for the Champions League is pointless. Who would wanna do that? Oh, it might hinder your chances of post season football! Oh no, how will we ever go a year without watching us go out in a one-off wild card match?! elmateo
Not to mention the number of Canadian players who go the start yesterday and the matches were entertaining, emotional and dramatic. Maybe the skill was a bit down because it wasn't quite first team squads but the kids put way more effort into it.

TFC07
Kelly is trying to get views on his articles. Don't take him seriously when comes to his soccer articles (I wonder if Kelly is even a soccer fan to begin with). Toronto Star needs to hire a soccer guy instead of having bunch of "sports" writers who don't follow soccer to write articles on soccer.

Just ignore the arsehead. Is the V's Cup on par with the FA Cup? The Lamar Hunt? No but you have to start somewhere and it is building nicely. As we get more teams in D2 we will have more teams competing for it and it will be looked back on as the start of something beautiful one day. Screw Kelly and cheers to everyone else. I couldn't help but think to myself while watching the TFC-Impact match that an 8 team Canadian league with say a $1M salary cap would probably be similar in quality and probably have as many young Canadians on the field. Tuscan
I'm pretty sure if someone built the business plan and showed the CSA how a U-23 regionalized league be financially feasible and stable, even possibly profitable in the future, they'd sign on asap. We all know we need this league to happen if we ever want to get to the World Cup. Cathal Kelly is **** and his articles should never get posted on this board again. Black. Listed. Olympique_de_Marseille
Kelly seemed to forget the huge importance of the tournament to Edmonton (and soon Ottawa); to be able to play top sides and reach for the CONCACAF Champions league. Oh, and I'm no TFC fan, but I'm sure they were happy to reach the semi-final of the CONCACAF Champions League and tie LA at home in front of a sellout crowd at the Rogers Center. A highlight in a season which would otherwise have been pure crap for them.
tmcmurph
If people had listened to aholes like him in England a century ago you'd never have the FA Cup get as big as it has. The first FA Cup competition in season 1871-72 had fifteen entries. (This season more than 700 took part.) From three to ?? Infinity and beyond. Olympique_de_Marseille
A strong argument for the utmost importance of MLS is that that the league is literally on fire. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/04/27/fire-crew-stadium-scoreboard-causes-delay-start-clb-dc-match
Cheeta
Point blank the highest quality competitive footie your going to see north of the Mexico-USA border is in CONCACAF Champions League. The Voyageurs Cup is the gateway into that competition. So if you want to see your team, based on merit, tested against the very best club teams in CONCACAF the V-Cup matters. But I guess that sort of thing just doesn't interest some people.

DJT
I would have liked to see Kelly write a **** article like this the day after that match. He is so full of it.What he did write that day: http://www.thestar.com/sports/soccer/tfc/2012/03/08/kelly_toronto_fc_gives_fans_a_show_and_galaxy_all_they_can_handle.html A few quotes from that article: As Toronto FC and the L.A. Galaxy took the field, a cascade of red and white streamers began to trickle slowly down from the 500 level. It lent everything a Salvador Dali feel — the Melting Stadium. While the streamers headed earthward, the noise began to rise inside the Rogers Centre. All 47,000 on hand — the majority of them in red — were on their feet and stayed there for a long while. It was marvellously ecstatic stuff Once in a while, a game transcends its result. Once in a while, the celebration is the thing. Wednesday night was one of those times. Agreed, I remember the then-NASL IMFC run in 2009 and it was so huge to compare and compete against the bigger MLS clubs and eventually the Mexican ones of course. rob.notenboom
Hey Kelly how was that for a "pointless sideshow"? Chuck you Farley!!! Awesome. Neither pointless, nor sideshow ... one of the best games I've watched this year. Great atmosphere and intense play. Had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Kelly probably didn't even know the game was on, and wouldn't have understood it if he'd watched. If Montreal makes a deep run into the CCL (and manages to stay healthy in the process) he will look like an even bigger fool.
