canadianfoot
Canada’s Women’s National Team was hard at work training in Nice on the eve of its clash against France. The Canadians will take on France at Stade du Ray in Nice on Thursday 4 April (18.30 local kick-off; 12.30 ET / 9.30 PT). Throughout this camp, Head Coach John Herdman has been challenging his players to step out of their comfort zone and so far the squad has been responding well. “We have had a solid five days and the team has worked extremely hard on and off the pitch,” said Head Coach John Herdman.”We’re entering this match with the mindset that regardless the result, the players will learn from the experience. We’re also looking forward to provide some of our younger players the opportunity to face a tier one opponent like France.” Of note, a late addition was made to the roster that will be available for Coach Herdman for these two matches. Full back Kylle Sjöman, who currently plays in the German Bundesliga II Division, has been called into her first level “A” camp since she competed for Canada’s youth teams in 2003 and 2004. Canada will be facing a hungry France team for the first time since their now historic confrontation at the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament when Canada won the Olympic bronze thanks to a dramatic goal in added time by Diana Matheson. “The French are a formidable opponent, unbeaten this year and who are peaking for the Euros,” added Herdman. “We know they will want to post a good showing so it will be our job to disappoint them." "This is a big test for us at this stage in our preparation, but with USA and Germany just around the corner, it doesn’t get any easier – nor would we want it to be!” The Canada-France match will be streamed live on Sportsnet.ca and fans will be able to follow live coverage on Twitter @CanadaSoccerEN. Post-match and highlights will also be available on canadasoccer.com and CanadaSoccerTV. Canada has an all-time record of 4 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses against the French since 1985. Canada will conclude this tour when it travels to Rotherham to face off against England on Sunday 7 April (15.00 local kick-off; 10.00 ET / 7.00 PT). This match will also be streamed live on Sportsnet.ca.

Mango
Fantastic finish by Canada as Kyle nets the tying goal in the dying seconds of injury time. Kyle came in as a sub and had two other solid chances before she buried this one. France definitely dominated the game, but great to see Canada get on board. They never gave up. 1-1 final. Lord Bob
****ing unbelievable appearance by Kyle. If she always played like that they'd have renamed the country Kaylynada by now. McLeod excellent. Buchanan promising, if well out of her depth at this level at her age. Matheson pretty good. Scott fine. Sinclair fine. Rest of team got speedbagged. Schmidt played as poorly as I've ever seen her. Joe MacCarthy
First half looked like Even P was still the coach. Abysmal. I thought of what Herdman's halftime speech would be and maybe he gave it. The game means nothing, the weather is miserable, we're getting our asses whipped, who here is going to slog away, tough it out and see this through to the bitter end. And he got his answer! The second half of the second half was much improved. Even if it had have been a loss it still was useful as Herdman subbed in most/all? of his youth, giving them invaluable experience. Good to hear a Canadian presence in the stands and (sexist comment of the day) good to see Renaud get a new hair stylist. And thankfully LeSommer hasn't been to the optometrist since the Olympics because she still can't put the puck in the ocean off the pier.
Joe MacCarthy
Schmidt played as poorly as I've ever seen her. That really stood out. Noticed Buchanan and Leon are real athletes. Usually when someone says athletic it almost comes across as an insult meaning lacking skill. If I may go retro I mean it in a Tony Menezes kinda way. Smooth. I used to be a big fan of Filigno but I'm beginning to wonder what she brings to the table, she's still young though. And after ten years of asking, I'm still wondering, what's with the throw ins? Can't someone just get open five feet away and have the ball thrown to them instead of a 20 yard 50-50 throw that we lose 99.8 percent of the time. Mango
McLeod excellent. Buchanan promising, if well out of her depth at this level at her age. Matheson pretty good. Scott fine. Sinclair fine. Rest of team got speedbagged. Schmidt played as poorly as I've ever seen her. Definitely. The fullbacks, Sesselmann and Wilkinson in particular, got caught up on a number of occasions leaving Moscato and Buchanan to fend for themselves in the middle. Speaking of Moscato, she bounced back after having some struggles throughout the Cyprus Cup. Good to see Buchanan confident out there. At 17, she's got a lot to offer. Using Zurrer up top late in the game is interesting. Herdman did this against England in Cyprus Cup final too, I think? But I could be mistaken. Guest Future CanWNT
^ yes I do seem to remember that. I also noticed several waisted chances where someone would just chip the ball over thier back four with no one running on to it, and straight through to the keeper. Likely just poor comunication, but if they can sort that out they would have had more real chances IMHO.
The Ref
Why is Wilkinson still playing and worst of all as a starter. France started at full speed while we were still waking up from a nap. Second half with the infusion of younger gals we started to look better. Kyle, although not my favorite player, did a great job trying to finish the few chances we got. But why was it her not our usual scoring gals like Sinclair, Filigno and Leon doing the finishing? Was that by design or did our strikers just got lost in the water. Our passing needs to be more crisp so in the rare occasions when we pass to an open player the ball gets there before an opponent pressures us and wins the ball. Lets us move to open spaces girls and play your game. I liked Moscato, Buchanan, McLeod and all the late younger subs.

Kyle's passing for the first 10 minutes she was on the field was really poor, but she definitely redeemed herself with those chances and the goal. Very happy to see her put one in. Our fullbacks were clearly 3-4 steps on almost every French attack. Sesselmann's give-away in the first half was Hainault-esque. Filigno did not offer any creativity and had a poor passing game. I was very impressed with Buchanan - she had some very timely clearances in the first-half. There were definitely shades of the Bronze medal game in that we were thoroughly outplayed for a lot of it, but France could not convert their numerous chances. I was less than optimistic after the first 45 minutes, but the improvements in the second half have me feeling better about the future of the team. DJT
Sportsnet.ca will STREAM the game, anyone able to record it?I would have if I had known about it. I wasn't following the forum close enough during the week to be made aware of this. Therefore, it would be best to send me a PM whenever something like this comes up. Of course, it would be nice if Sportsnet would have a centralized listing of their Webcasts along with their television broadcasts. For example, I don't see tonight's men's U17 WCQ match or tomorrow's women's friendly mentioned in a convenient place (as opposed to perhaps buried in an article somewhere) -- do they not want people to know about them? However, it is incomplete (eg. it doesn't list the England game), and there doesn't seem to be a permanent link to that page from the main page, so how can it be found if it is not bookmarked?
