2015 NASL expansion

Jacksonville had a team in the old NASL for a couple of years. The New England Tea Men moved to Jacksonville in 1981 to become....the Jacksonville Tea Men. Someone obviously didn't think that one through. Hopefully, they will go with a more appropriate nickname this time around.

I was wondering why Canadian expansion was NOT mentioned at the NASL meeting in Dallas on July 25th.

I imagine that Calgary was a close call but for the deluge of last month. Remember that whilst the AGM is a good time to announce these expansions they didn't announce Indy and Virginia at that time previously. I imagineA Canadian may be announced towards the end of the year for starting next Fall.

The Commish Bill Peterson said that one more team is likely to be added for 2015, either a revived Puerto Rico Islanders or another team. A good chance that team may be Calgary, they would have to be announced by Nov this year though to get the standard minimum 18 months prep time that NASL seems to want expansion teams to have.

^ If I may indulge in a small side-track in regards to Indy Eleven: I love the story of their name a crest. So wonderfully local and full of historical meaning. Much better than generic weather-related or animal names we so often see in North America. Here's hoping they are trend-setters.

This Indy group seems to know what they are doing. You have to hand it to the NASL, they seem to have found some good new owners/teams. San Antonio, Cosmos, Indy, the complete re-invigoration of Carolina by new owners are all winners. Edmonton is one notable non-success so far at least. I have high hopes for Ottawa but we'll see.

^ that a Calgarian troll J?;)

Joking apart. Edmonton may seem like the least successful. However they have been around now since 2009, which, according to those in the know, in Soccer Terms in Alberta is Legendary stickability.

Seen of the capitals at any rate.

I would suggest Jason that what Edmonton really needs to get some fire under it (in local support term) is a Cowtown side to play against on a regular basis.

That been said 4000 tickets were sold for the last game of the season.

Until Calgary gets a club, FCE is the closest thing I have right now so I wish them nothting but the best :-) I find it frustrating that Fath and crew have done a lot of the the "right things" and have still not gotten much traction yet. Winning more would undoubtedly help. A Calgary side would be useful too, but is probably not the most vital thing needed. The 2004 season where the Mustangs and Aviators both played in the A-League didn't generate much excitement, but I realize that was a different time and circumstance.

Im really glad FCE are around period. We need something in Alberta. I think that the club in general is heading in the right direction, just slowly. The addition of the new stands really helps. The biggest sticking point is the crappy turf. If they can get that out, or at least get rid of the football lines, it should help them a a lot. That and winning are the best tonics to help the clubs profile which just needs to be raised a bit more. I love what they are doing with their academy so far. Its great for the Canadian talent pool.

On the topic of Calgary and NASL, it is time to start hearing some progress on the rumours that started last year. What the heck happened to Joe Petrone's efforts? The trail went dead over the summer.

Based on comments Petrone has made previously, I don't have a lot of faith in his efforts. However, I will gladly eat my words if he can put anything together. If anyone can put a pro or PDL club in town, I will get tickets.

I'll second this. I'll also second that Petrone's comments towards a club in Calgary don't leave a good taste in my mouth, starting and ending with McMahon.

FC Edmonton will be going on their 4th NASL season in 2014, which is probably longer than a lot of folks thought they'd be around. It's clear Fath is in this for the long haul, although at some point he's going to have to see long term viability in the club.
