nolando
Projects to be a starting striker to start the season. I thought he was Edmonton's best player vs Whitecaps' reserves the other week, FWIW.
shermanator
I think Cox and Darryl Fordyce will form a good partnership up front. He's one of the few holdovers from the original team, along with Shaun Saiko and Antonio Rago. Third all time in club scoring with 5 goals too! Lord Bob
FC Edmonton gave a bit of the story on Twitter in a few tweets, spliced together for your convenience: "@JeffDSalisbury @the11ca @Latetedefred @Lord_Bob #FCEd had tried to re-sign Michael to a new contract for the 2014 season and did have a tentative agreement in place last week. However, on Wednesday afternoon #FCEd was informed by Michael that he had chosen to not sign the 2014 contract but instead was pursuing possible other opportunities." shermanator
I wonder if he's trying to go the route of Kyle Porter - hoping to get a shot at MLS play? I don't he him getting a chance at MLS, but maybe in a lower division league in Europe (thinking 2nd division Finland)
shermanator
Colin Miller stated in his 2013 season wrap up that Cox had a deal signed with FC Edmonton, then switched agents, backed out of the deal, and decided to make a go in Europe. Door is closed on him returning to FC Edmonton. Here's hoping that route pays off for him, like it did when Porter trialed with DC. http://the11.ca/2013/11/06/colin-millers-postmortem-searching-for-scoring-more-on-michael-cox-possible-nasl-rule-changes/

Big difference. FCE/Miller might be pissed off having felt they had a deal but until the contract is signed Cox has every right to change his mind. There seems to be a lot of contract weirdness at FC Edmonton under Miller. Every major player departure seems to have some ludicrous contractual back story according to the club. deschamp86
Miller seems to have a habit of running good players out of town such as Saiko and Hamilton, and also burning bridges with others (Porter, Cox) by saying that "the door is closed". Most clubs just say "The club announced that the contracts of the players have not been renewed"; FC Edmonton is giving details.

Most clubs just say "The club announced that the contracts of the players have not been renewed"; FC Edmonton is giving details. I'll second this. They were very transparent at the end of the year. They announced the status of every member of the roster; who they had signed and for how long, who they were negotating with, why deals fell through, etc.
tmcmurph
While it is nice of FCE to provide details giving players ultimatums when you are a modestly paying D2 team and shutting the door is just plain bad. Something along the lines of "we wish him well in his future endeavours" would give other players looking at your club a better impression. Yes people change their mind and if there is no signed contract then that is their right. I know having an "agreement in principle" worked out then having one side change their mind hurts and has wasted a lot of your time but Miller needs to realize they are a stepping stone not the final destination for all the young players there. ditty
Fantastic news. Seems like an upward move to me. I disagreed with Miller's assessment of Cox when he opted to try Europe and this seems to bare it out. To paraphrase "I think he's getting bad advice. There are a million Michael Coxes in Europe". Ever since he was a 15 year old, I thought he had massive potential as a striker and was really happy when the original FCE coaching staff gave him a chance. He's big, strong and quick with really soft and he's still only 22 this month. I don't think he's even close to the finished product yet.

tmcmurph
While I'm sad to hear his first shot at pro soccer didn't work out I'm glad to see him parlay those experiences into an education. Best of luck to him in the future both sporting and business wise.
