Canada M17 come together ahead of CONCACAF Championship

Posted on 28 March 2013 in Men's U-17 Team

Canada’s Men’s U-17 team will come together from 30 March to 4 April in Sunrise, FL for a final preparation camp ahead of the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Championship to take place in Panama beginning on 6 April.

“This will be a chance for us to finalize our roster and keep the momentum going after a couple strong performances during our last camp in Costa Rica,” said U-17 Head Coach Sean Fleming.

“We will have a few days in Florida to make sure that everybody is one-hundred percent focus on the task at hand.

“We have a very difficult opening match at the CONCACAF Championship against Trinidad and Tobago so we need to ensure we put forward our best possible performance to start the competition.”

The team will train for four days in Florida before departing for Panama on 4 April.

Canada have been drawn into Group B at the CONCACAF Championship alongside Costa Rica and Trinidad and Tobago.

The top two teams from the group will advance to the all-important quarter-final stage that will determine which four CONCACAF nations will qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup UAE 2013.

Canada has assembled a roster of 23 players for pre-tournament camp in Florida. The squad will need to be trimmed to just 20 players for the CONCACAF Championship.

Can't wait to see Boakai, Froese, Hamilton and Bustos. Thought Hamilton was good two years ago so it'll be interesting to see how he has developed.

Does any other team have another player that played in 2011? Let alone TWO? Froese-Gonzalez played for Cuba 2 years ago for those who don't know.

Surprised to see Ali Musse from WSA Winnipeg ( PDL ) invited to the camp considering he was listed as having been born in 1994 in the WSA Website. He apparently played youth soccer in for Winnipeg South End united as a 1994 and I am told he graduated from high school last year in 2012.

I've noticed that Raheem Taylor-Parkes hasn't been included in either the Canadian or American set-up. If I can find the article I read about him recently, he was playing for the American U15s this year too, so maybe they are saving him for the next round of U17s. Or maybe he just hasn't continued to develop like he had been projected to.

He used Canada as a stepping stone. He played for the U.S after he played for Canada. He's gone.

He played for them before he played for us as well. Whatever, no surprise there really and hopefully Sam Vinson doesn't do the same because I've read that he's part of the US pool.

Only 1 from MTL? That's very surprising. Also, quite a few ONT kids NOT @ the TFCA. Wow.

Well, cross your fingers everyone.

This just shows you either TFCA isn't that great or other clubs in GTA have just as much talented players as TFCA teams do.

The GTA is huge. One TFC Academy team per age group is never going to be enough for the massive number of players in this area.

I don't see the big deal.

It's not a big deal if TFC are misidentifying players that would be ranked 15-20 for their academy teams with little likelihood of making it as a pro, but it does become a problem if FOUR kids are chosen for the youth national team over the majority of the kids the club choose instead. Even more telling is that two of those four non-TFC players are a year underage (97's).

What's the deal with the Impact? Is it a language problem or something? I mean, Tissot, Ouimette both recieved professional contracts. Also they were second in the CSL last year and from most things I have seen, have a solid squad. Yet, they get just one go on the list.

A few of those kids are planning to try and make a go of it in Europe. Given the commitment letter TFCA makes you sign that might help explain why they aren't with them.

At least Quebec have three players. There are only two from BC.

Actually it's four: 2 from Ahuntsic, 1 from Lakeshore and 1 Academy guy.

The Impact started their Academy with Sports-Études program 3 years ago. It does take time to have the players coming to them, and the kids who started at the beginning are now 15. It's too early to say if it isn't working now. Let's see in 2 years if it's still the case.

The BC players from Whitecaps are in a similar situation. The reforms brought be Richard Grooscholten in 2010, with the foundation of the EA Sports Premier League, brought local U13s into the academy -which had previously focused on recruiting in Western Provinces. Some of these '98s have been playing a lot on the USSDA U16 team (with mixed results). It will be interesting to see them step up to U18 and whether they start to get noticed by the National Team next cycle.

OK, well that explains it to a certain extent...do you know how long the commitment letter is for? Has it been increased from one year?
