I wouldn't say that is the problem with MLS. It is a problem faced by 20 year olds all over the world. The vast majority need more development time. Even when they are great players there may not be room on the first team for them. Look at Bojan. He broke Messi's records in Barcelona's academy but was mostly a substitute for the first team until sold (with a buyback clause) to Roma.

The level of play in MLS is getting much higher and that is a good thing. Frustrating it is without suitable loan out opportunities to lower leagues. By the way I think the 3 are going to the USL not NASL (Charleston not the Railhawks). We'll see.

Where would his development be better suited, in North America with a USL squad or overseas with a club like Augsburg 2?

Regionalliga Bayern is the higher playing level and run more professionally. He also has the added benefit of being close to the first team, who are gonna play Bundesliga (maybe 2.Bundesliga next year).

The strange thing about Clarke is that he started off the USL season quite strongly but faded badly. In any case, his half-assed commitment to the 'caps since signing means that he won't be missed by many of the fans or, I suspect, the organization. I'm sure Vancouver wishes they would have cut him and kept Zanatta.

Zanatta wasn't going to stay. I wish people would stop talking about this as if it's a failure of the whitecaps, he wanted Europe.

there's a bit of a disturbing trend where the best use of the canadian academies seems to be sticking with them until you're old enough/good enough to get first team looks somewhere else. I really hope I'm proved wrong this year.

That is to be expected. Some will go to university, some will want to try Europe and some will stay. That is the way it goes. I'm sure we'd all love to see them stay and move up to the first team but they have options and have to do what they feel is best for their lives.

Pick any of the top academies in Europe - most the players never pan out. This "trend" here is nothing new or even newsworthy. Most kids aren't good enough or fall out of love for the game and aren't willing to put in the work and dedication to make it happen. Others move on for various reasons personal or footballing reasons. No different to anywhere in the world.

Played the second half of the last German season with Unterhaching in Bayernliga Nord (tier IV). Made only 6 appearances, including 3 starts, never really broke into the lineup with one of the league's better teams.

He signed with FC Amberg in the off-season, who were relegated from the same division as Unterhaching last season and now play in the Bayernliga Nord (tier V). He appears to be getting some minutes, having appeared in 8 out of 19 league games so far this season, however he's apparently out injured at the moment so it's possible he's a starter for them normally. He has one goal so far this season. http://fcamberg.de/archives/category/news/page/6/

Amberg are currently 6-6-7 this season, sitting 12th out of 18.

Caleb Clarke has left FC Amberg to an unknown destination.

He had a great first season in Germany, when he played for FC Augsburg II. He really disappointed at FC Amberg though, according to his stats and various local newspaper articles.

Looking forward to the rivalry between Unattached FC and An Unknown Destination FC.
